Is there such a concoction that you can get your 5 a day in one go?

Xenia, 4 bananas counts as one unfortunately. It has to be 5 different fruit and veg!

Also I think baked beans and pulses only count as one no matter how many different types you eat.

It is on the food standards website

but...if you add fiber and not just juice but also eat a good amount of fruit and veg it wouldn't be a problem anyway....
I mean fiber isn't the only important reason why ne should have fruit and veg...vitamins and minerals are hugely important and like I said you can add fiber via psylliam husk which works fab in juices and smoothies...and smoothies where you add full fruit/veg...like avocados in the blender still give you the fiber but in a much easier digested form.
Well...am a Jason Vale/Juicemaster fan...need I say more...
for Kids fruitjuices and smoothies can be fab....and if you add life yoghurt, nuts or soya milk/ricemilk in especially pure fruit ones then that helps in keeping sugarlevels level.

Also, I think one should see the intake of different fruit/veg over a week, rather then days...especially kids tend to have days where they go banana crazy or whatever, aslong over a matter of a weak thewy get everything in good quantities I think they will do just fine...just my opinion, of course.

I agree with your last post 3andnomore

I think juices are great but I don't think they are a substitute for eating whole fruit and veg, that's what I was talking about earlier

3andnomore · 03/07/2007 21:16

oh f course just jiuces long term are not the way to go....but, imo...if someone likes homeexpressed juices but doesn't like fruit and veg in other formms...i's better then nothing, and fiber can come from other sources....but the vitamins/minerals can't as much...and no synthetic vitamins and ,imerals really don't cut the mustard, iykwim...

prufrock · 03/07/2007 21:23

OK - I may be being thick here, but if I put a handful of strawberries, a banana and some yoghurt in a blender, whizz it, and drink straight away, why am I not getting 2 portions? Where is the fibre going? The blender is only doing the mastication job for me - I'm still eating the whole fruit.

FrannyandZooey · 03/07/2007 21:26

we're talking extracted juice here prufrock, that's a smoothie

when you put fruit in a juicer the pulp and fibre gets left behind on the mesh

in a blender you are eating the whole fruit, BUT

the fibre has already been partially broken down by the liquidiser

so it is still preferable to eat the whole, unprocessed fruit, however juices and smoothies are packed full of good sruff also

3andnomore · 03/07/2007 21:43

must say, the Juicemaster, who is obviously into Juicving, recommends mainly Smoothies, but the smoothies will be a mixture of fruit and veggies juiced smoothied/blended with Avocado and apple...etc...and/or fiber rich psyllium...just clarifying this...lol

Isn't it much easier, and probably more interesting, not to have it all in one go anyway? I find it simpler to see the day as lots of little opportunities to have some fruit and veg.

So fruit juice and/or some fresh fruit with breakfast, piece of fruit mid-morning, salad or tomatoes or whatever with lunch, at least 3 veg with tea, fruit-based pudding (fresh, frozen, stewed or whatever), small tub of dried fruit and nuts/seeds for supper.

It all adds up and doesn't feel a chore.

Trava · 04/07/2007 17:52

I'm pretty certain that the reason fruit juice and smoothies only count as one portion is because of the way that processing affects the cells (as well as fibre content). When fruits are blitzed the cell walls are broken down, and this results in sugars being released which would otherwise not be released until digestion.

These intrinsic sugars affect both dental health (and promote tooth decay), as well as blood sugar levels (and therefore insulin sensitivity/resistance).

I remember reading about this recently, and Innocent Smoothies were used as an example of misleading labelling (their bottles state that they contribute X portions of F&V but can actually only be counted once).

3andnomore · 04/07/2007 17:57

Trava, the Bloodsugar thing is only a problem if you use just fruit though....if you juice some cucumber and celery and spinach wiht pineapple and apple Juice and maybe quickly blitz some avocado in for fiber, etc...then it isn't a problem. Obviously might still an issue if someone is diabetic, extra care needs to be taken....
