Going to a do where we all have to take a tray of nibbles for c 40 people. Host refuses to be more specific except she wants me to do savoury. No cooking/reheating to be done at her house as oven will be in use. Finger food only. My fall-back is home made sausage rolls. What would you make in similar situation?

I should add not cheese/meat platter with bread/crackers as that is already sorted. (Bang goes my easiest idea!)

Hummous/baba ganoush and crudités
Wedges and dip
Cold sandwiches
Pie
Quiche

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/12/2018 00:10

Thank you @Veterinari . Wedges would be lovely but I personally wouldn't like cold wedges and oven is out of bounds. Quiche is a great idea, i could make in a rectangular dish and cut into cubes on cocktail sticks. Thanks!!!

To be honest I think most canapés are best warm.
If I had to do cold i’d Do some nice homemade dips with crudités and breadsticks.
Quails eggs with celery salt
Blinis with cream cheese and salmon
Crostini with blue cheese and fig

AdaColeman · 16/12/2018 15:37

Vol au vents are easy.
Buy them frozen and bake at home. So many filling options too.
I like using Campbell's mushroom soup as a filling.
Also - smoked salmon & herby cream cheese, prawn cocktail, egg-mayo with paprika, tuna mayo & chives...

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/12/2018 16:03

I've bought mini vol-au-vent cases like these before. If you do a smoked salmon filling (blend together smoked salmon, cream cheese, lemon juice and dill) they're much nicer at room temperature than hot. Pipe them, and they look like you've put a lot more effort in than they actually take!

Mozzarella balls, cherry tomato and a basil leaf on a cocktail stick?

Taffeta · 16/12/2018 16:13

I cater canapés for 70 people every Christmas for a party and I utterly disagree that the best canapés are warm Grin

I never do warm canapés as who the fuck wants to be chained to the oven all night? Not me.

Here are some that I do:

Rare roast beef slices with Stilton and watercress sauce on rye bread squares
Tomato mozzarella and basil on a stick drizzled with balsamic reduction
Stllton celery and walnut on sourdough toast round drizzled with honey
Homemade chicken liver pate on sourdough toast round with cornichon or cherry tomato slice
Feta cucumber rounds
Homemade smoked mackerel pate with cucumber on some sort of carb eg toast or cracker or croustade
Lobster and crab mini brioche rolls
Smoked salmon with cream cheese on blini with dill lemon and black pepper

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/12/2018 17:20

Thank you all so much, amazing suggestions and will use some of them at home too

@Taffeta I wouldn't say the best canapés are warm - but some things are better warm - for my taste anyway, eg I would prefer warm samosas or potato wedges to cold ones

OP posts:
Taffeta · 17/12/2018 07:32

Oh yes op canapés that are designed to be warm are indeed grim cold Grin

Snog · 17/12/2018 08:50

Can someone please tell me what wedges are?
I'm 51 and I don't know Blush

AdaColeman · 17/12/2018 09:39

Xmas Grin Wedges are cut from potato or sweet potato, like large fat chips, usually with the skin left on for potato. They have a coating of oil and sometimes flavouring and are baked in the oven.
So, like slightly more healthy chips.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/12/2018 18:31

A couple of my favourites (which I have used with this group too many times to want to repeat but sharing for anyone else looking for ideas):
Chorizo, red pepper and Emmental cubes on cocktail sticks (had them at someone else's house and the combination is lovely).
Dried figs stuffed with goats cheese & wrapped in Parma ham
Cubes of water melon, feta and a black olive

TheSpottedZebra · 17/12/2018 18:38

Why don't you make your sausage rolls? They'll probably be devoured instantly.

Snog · 17/12/2018 19:00

Thank you AdaColeman Xmas Grin

AdaColeman · 17/12/2018 19:34

Snog You can try them now that you've caught up with the jargon! Xmas Grin

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 17/12/2018 20:41

@TheSpottedZebra you know I think you might be right. I also prefer sausage rolls warm but I think there'll be lots of dips things on sticks so might just do that and use all the other lovely suggestions for my family over Christmas .
