Almost scared to ask, but where do fishsticks rank on the food police hierarchy of junk?

Because dd (15 months and quite particular about what she eats) seems to have taken a liking to them!

I'm talking about those crabstick things (that don't actually contain much crab) not fish fingers in case there's room for confusion.

I know they have some crap in them, but do also contain a fair bit of fish.

Would you feed them to your dc?

I would and do. I don't care what they contain, they also contain fish.

They do contain Surimi, I know that.

Carmenere · 21/05/2007 11:30

They have a LOT of sugar in them and are also quite salty and I am guessing msg too. I would say they are ok for an occasional treat but not a weekly thing iyswim.

colditz · 21/05/2007 11:30

I know you will be judged and Found Wanting, they do have crap in. they are nice though.

Better than a Lunchable!

FrannyandZooey · 21/05/2007 11:30

I am Ready

FrannyandZooey · 21/05/2007 11:31

(psst colditz what is surimi??)

OrmIrian · 21/05/2007 11:31

Yummy!

Is that helpful?

Kaloo20 · 21/05/2007 11:31

just the thought of rubbery manufactured crab sticks makes me wanna heave

gotta leave this thread!

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/05/2007 11:32

White fish (50%) (good start)
Water (nothing bad there)
Wheat starch
Soya bean oil
Egg white
Sugar
Salt
Sorbitol (is this REALLY bad for a youngster?)
Crab extract
Isolated soy protein powder
E120 (oh dear)
E160C (oh dear again)

They are a very easy to eat texture for a 4 toothed toddler though .

It's a sort of TVP for fish, I think!

OrmIrian · 21/05/2007 11:33

Oh...you did mean crabsticks! I misunderstood.

May I withdraw yummy uneqivocally and substitute yeuuucchhhhh please?

Yummy was for fishfingers only.

colditz · 21/05/2007 11:33

LOL at crab extract.

that means they line up some crabs, and show them the fish sticks.

HuwEdwards · 21/05/2007 11:33

why is the soy protein powder 'isolated' - do the other ingredients not approve?

EvilSmellingBugger · 21/05/2007 11:34

sugar, salt & crab depends how much s&s there is. unsure of crabbyness - shellfish

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/05/2007 11:34

lol colditz. I knew I was doomed as soon as Franny asked for the ingredients!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 21/05/2007 11:35

Hmm

well e160c is ok I think, but e120 is Not Good

Sorbitol - hmmm

salt and sugar look quite high up the list, what do you reckon? Does it list salt content in terms of grams?

AitchTwoOh · 21/05/2007 11:35

i've never understood how people could like them. dd always found salmon easy to eat becasue of the big flakes.

FrannyandZooey · 21/05/2007 11:36

e120 (I have no idea whether that website is reputable btw)

wasn't e120 one of the ones they are now saying should be banned?

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/05/2007 11:37

What is E120?

Per stick they are 0.05g of sodium (which I know you multiply by 2.5 to get salt) - that's not too bad IMO.

FrannyandZooey · 21/05/2007 11:37

No I beg your pardon it was e122 carmoisine

I thought that was the same thing, sorry
