I used to get Mr Mash, which is about 99% potato flakes, from the Co-Op so it is much better then Smash. Also, you can buy frozen mashed potato in the supermarket, some are own make and some are Aunt Bessies. You could also make a batch and freeze in portions - we do this for dd as it is dh that cooks and me that feeds it to her...lol

. chop the tatties up small enough and they take 5 minutes. they certainly take no longer than whatever else you're going to cook. when you've got spare time make extra and freeze it. and if you really have no time at all give them bread.

SMASH PIZZA

You've gotta try it to believe it - it's really nice.

Need packet of original smash in a bowl add enough boiling water to make it into a dough consistency. Spray a baking try with fry light, add mix evenly over tray to make pizza base. Bake for 10 mins until crispy. Add passata, mushrooms, peppers, onion and top with cheese. You could add any other toppings of your choice (ie ham, pineapple etc)
Put back in oven until ready.

20 minutes to make proper mash. Yeah right ? I make shepperds pie, on mass, for all my friends, they babies. Takes me all morning, to make "shepherds", to peel spuds.
Making mash is one of the most intensive, time consuming productions.
And I have considered this, in my once dream, of turning my normal cooking, into a business venture, of making proper meals, for tired/ hungry mums + weaning children.
Don't get me wrong, I don't eat smash. But to imply that proper mash, to make a big enough amount of mash to go over, say a 16 inch by 9 inch glass tray, x2 , of shepperds pie, take 20 minutes ? Dream on.

TheMaskedPoster · 18/05/2007 21:27

pah!!!

easy as pie

20 mins at the MOST!!!

(((am a world champion speed masher dontchaknow!!)))

Oblomov · 18/05/2007 21:36

The masked poster = the mashed potato - go on then, if its so bl**dy easy, let me in your tips

moondog · 18/05/2007 22:10

Gah,you slovenly lazy fuckers.

I was behind an enormous unhealthy looking woman in M& S yesterday. She had cook chill packets of rice. Rice I tell you!!!!!!!
How fucking hard is it to boil some rice.

I tapped her on the shoulderand said
'I'm not surprised that your arse is so huge and your complexion so bad judging by contents of yer trolley.'

Oblomov · 18/05/2007 22:15

LOL Moondag. Was she so friggin big that she had to go sideays , between the tills - mind you , I know those posh M&S ones are small {wink}

Frascati · 18/05/2007 22:15

I would give this a go auntbessies

UCM · 18/05/2007 22:17

Love you babe

Oblomov · 18/05/2007 22:17

Frascati, they look RANK !! Is it nice ?

Jenkeywoo · 18/05/2007 22:19

Mashed potato is a pain in arse to make - a good 10 mins to peel the potatos caked in mud. another 20 or so boiling, then all that mashing. Proper mash is great but when you walk through the door and you have children who are hungry now then making your own is not always an option. We keep frozen Aunt Bessies for such emergencies - but then I also feed my children with tinned pasta and sausages so they are already being fed crap.

Frascati · 18/05/2007 22:21

oblomov ~ not sure but for what essbee wants them for would be ideal (so her ds can take his medicine)

I remember as a teenager having something similar in my freezer at home and I would put it in the microwave. Then I would add loads of milk, butter, salad cream and tomato ketchup

misdee · 18/05/2007 22:21

its is bloody easy to make mash with no peeling or chopping if you are not adverse to a bit of microwave usage. i said how to do it further down.

misdee · 18/05/2007 22:23

and yes, i can make 2 medium shepherds pies in under 30mins, one to cook then and one for the freezer.

UCM · 18/05/2007 22:24

Noooooooooooo, don't peel, invest in a potato ricer, I had one for years but until I read Nigellas book where she tells you not to bother peeling, just cut and boil and the ricer sorts it all out at the end. She was right you know, it does. They are 4.99 on ebay.

UCM · 18/05/2007 22:25

I never peel spuds for mash now. The skin stays in the ricer which is like a huge garlic press.

colditz · 18/05/2007 22:25

No you didn't MD, you wanted to, but you didn't, because you were scared she would sit on you.

Oblomov · 18/05/2007 22:28

misdee, Ihave re-read thread & your post.
Microwave sounds good. But I still agree with jenkeywoo - mash is sucha kerfuffle.
Surely microwaving does not allow, on mass ? My micowave only allows 5-6 big jackets and that is not enough to make 2 dishes of shep pie.

UCM · 18/05/2007 22:29

See here

Oblomov · 18/05/2007 22:30

I too have a 'Rick Stein ' cicer. Or a Nigella one, where she advises not peeling them. What a load of * - more hasssle, picking out the skin bits. Not worth it.
