tinned potatoes??????

ArcticRoll · 18/05/2007 18:26

When I was a child my mother would buy Smash for our camping holidays.
I have fond memories of sitting in a rain splaterred tent eating the little cubes straight from the tin (euuh).

Greensleeves · 18/05/2007 18:28

But seriously, you can't let your children eat synthetic food

It's so..........slummy

Sparkler1 · 18/05/2007 18:29

Did you know you can make Pizza with Smash? It's yummy too.

noddyholder · 18/05/2007 18:30

what is smash made of?Is it just potato?I had it at school as a child bloody private school too!Seem to remember it is powdery and stodgy I must admit I do buy M&s sometimes if I am feeling lazy but nothing beats real potatos and loads of butter and sour cream

ggglimpopo · 18/05/2007 18:31

My dd went to lunch with a friend and came home and said 'they eat real mashed potato - out of a box'.

How do you make pizza with smash btw?

NomDePlume · 18/05/2007 18:32

Gross. Gross. Gross.

ktmoomoo · 18/05/2007 18:39

ffs it does not hurt once in a while lol

NomDePlume · 18/05/2007 18:40

but it tastes NOTHING like mashed potato.

ktmoomoo · 18/05/2007 18:40

it does taste of potatoe lol

NomDePlume · 18/05/2007 18:42

It doesn't, and the texture is all wrong.

CODalmighty · 18/05/2007 18:42

course it dons t hurt
i just woudl neevrhtink of buying it

Carmenere · 18/05/2007 18:42

It is all about balance. My mum used to give us smash the very odd time but she also used to bake bread most mornings and make yoghurt and make home made food from scratch most of the time, what is the harm.
Of course if it is making up the majority of the childs diet it is wrong but Essbee loves her son and she is trying to get him to take his meds, why condem a mother who is doing her best under difficult circumstances??

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2007 18:42

god I don't even like real mash that much

I vaguely remember some kind of Hipp mashed potato I misguidedly bought once? Ds hated it.

ktmoomoo · 18/05/2007 18:43

ok lets just agree to disagree life too short to dicuss potato lol

Greensleeves · 18/05/2007 18:43

It tastes of salt. It smells like hospital corridors. Eeeeeuuuuch.

niceglasses · 18/05/2007 18:44

Not wrong, different.

Don't like meself, but ds1 does and as he wont eat my real mashed potato (though the other 2 do and I gave him it as baby etc blah de blah)........I'd rather he ate something.

Must check Sainsbos label to see if anything horrifying in there next time.

misdee · 18/05/2007 18:45

when pregnant i had cravings for the onion smash. hmmmmm.

quickest way to do mash essbee without resorting to smash, is to microwave a spud till its cooked, cut in half, then press it through a potato ricer. no effort involved. then stir in milk/butter/whatever you want with a fork.

FrannyandZooey · 18/05/2007 18:46

So in the vague possibility that the OP really did want to get advice on the "healthiest" instant mashed potato I would say:

Hipp

because I don't think it has any salt in and it is organic

misdee · 18/05/2007 18:46

this is fab!

Wotzsaname · 18/05/2007 19:19

a Little instant anything can be good. I have tried the new rice in bag stuff and its OK!

[note to self, must not make staff room funny or else you will get winning old mingers turning up for a laugh!]

PartyClown · 18/05/2007 19:36

The best instant mash is made with half cream, half milk, and nearly half a pound of butter, the way my brother used to make it when we were kids. Served with fishfingers and beans. Mmmmm.

ktmoomoo · 18/05/2007 19:39

at last some one who likes instant mash

SuGaRCoAteDPoiSOn · 18/05/2007 20:01

I love it!! Mr Mash is the best - add some butter and I usually put some veggies and tuna/chicken/ham or whatever's in the fridge and it's great stodgy, comfort food

I've also used it to thicken soups.
No one else in the house will touch it tho, which means...... more for meeeee
