aaaargh

I am doing my shop online at goodnessdirect .

now don't get me wrong, dried mango and other actual food and so forth GOOD, its all this parnoia about chemicals that is getting me.

Eat good food cos it TASTES nice, not cos you think that otherwise insidious chemicals will do something bad

oh i desrve a flaming from the lentil weavers, I have broken rank, i am sorry, but aaaargh!

no i love my organic food thanks very much, tastes, smells, looks better than cheap shit Asda chicken that is full of hormones and god knows what else !

chemicals DO exist, if you are happy eating them, fine !

the thing that changed my life was that fish on The Simpsons with 3 eyes - lol

yellowrose · 18/04/2007 09:19

agree with not taking vit. supplements though, i only take calcium, mag. + zinc because i don't eat enough dairy, have a family history of bone problems, don't want my bones to break every other day when i am 70 !

glitterfairy · 18/04/2007 09:21

I agree fillyjonk that many things go to make something work or not but the evidence from so called placebos when up against drugs like prozac is quite astounding.

oliveoil · 18/04/2007 09:28

the worried well

don't even get ME STARTED on these folks

get yourself a proper disease and then start whining you maggots

does anyone read Normandie Keith in the MOS magazine (disclaimer: MIL's copy)? Now I am sure she is very nice but every other week waffles on about this symptom or that and how this spa is fab and only £5467 for a facial

TooTicky · 18/04/2007 09:34

Iron supplements can actually cause your body to get rid of its iron. I don't know if this is the case with other supplements.
But homoeopathy IS real and amazing when done properly.
And I confess to owning a copy of the Crystal Bible. It's interesting but I'm not quite sure where I stand. Well, not on the spiky ones anyway.

Carmenere · 18/04/2007 09:48

Imo it is vitally important that we have people who challenge the conventional medical system in the same way as we have people who challenge the major food producers. Apart from the industrial food producers, the other and often interlinked forces for evil on this planet are the drug companies who prey on the sick for their profits.

Obviously in life it is always a case of caveat emptor and really, if you are in a car crash, a couple of crystals are not going to help but when it comes to well-being it has to be a good thing that there are alternatives to chemical drugs to take.

Basically in situations where there are shareholders expecting dividends caution needs to be applied.

Fillyjonk · 18/04/2007 10:17

lol at you all

NO ONE has asked WHY I was shopping at goodness direct, if I am such a cynic.

Um, Carmenere, why should I be more worried about Pfizer's shareholders than about an alternative therapist who is personally getting all the money handed over?

And what, pray tell, is a 'chemical drug'? More importantly, are there non-chemical drugs?

Placebos are a minefield. You (obviously) can't get informed consent to use them, but they do really work. Placebo injections are better than pills, and placebo operations (not kidding!) are best of all ...

Fillyjonk · 18/04/2007 10:38

oh cos i do prefer food that hasn't been faffed with

am not especially anti organic food

though do think its rather complex in emviornmental terms

also think this idea that nature will take care of us is rather daft and a bit of a Western luxury

I am currently writing an article on 'are you wasting your money on vitamin supplements' and am fighting my urge to write a one-word one of PROBABLY.

oliveoil · 18/04/2007 13:02

that may cut down your fee a tad MI

just write a load of waffle and then add "in conclusion, probably" at the end

motherinferior · 18/04/2007 13:04

Strangely enough, I might find myself doing just that.

oliveoil · 18/04/2007 13:06

not that you waffle obviously

motherinferior · 18/04/2007 13:06

Oh no, I am aiming for incisive interviews. With, er, people. Somewhere.

Cutting edge journo, moi.

OrmIrian · 18/04/2007 13:11

"also think this idea that nature will take care of us is rather daft"

Because it is daft. Anyway as our species tends to mess the world up quite badly I tend to think that if Nature was a person she would be a very very angry lady indeed with the naughty step in mind, rather than a gentle snuggly old bird .

RubberDuck · 18/04/2007 13:12

MI - if you're in research mode, Nature's Own vitamins has a huge patter about our food having much fewer vitamins and minerals in it than it did several decades ago - even organic stuff.

Would be interested to know if the original research can be unearthed as that obviously has an impact as to whether vits are necessary (if even with a good diet you're not getting a full complement of vits and minerals then obviously you're going to need to supplement).

Their vits are also food state - so your body sees them as food rather than unrecognisable substances and absorbs them better - again would love to know if the science backs that up (but am too lazy to research myself )

motherinferior · 18/04/2007 13:18

Thank you, RD. I shall roam the internet cheerily, I mean conduct some serious in-depth research.

custy · 18/04/2007 13:20

so it white bread just shit? - as a side thing there

NotQuiteCockney · 18/04/2007 15:30

Hmmm, I've seen stuff in the Guardian or Observer about food having a lot less nutrients now, possibly due to intensive cultivation? I am unconvinced as to how this would happen. I've also seen lots of articles saying there is no nutritional benefit to organic food, either.

I end up wondering how exact the measurement of nutritional benefit is and was.

IcingOnTheCake · 18/04/2007 15:42

I know theres no crap in my white bread

Fillyjonk · 18/04/2007 17:27

i know thats the thing isn't it nqc

presumably there is an objective measure of "wholesomeness" somewhere out there?

think white is largely shite with a bit of vomit thrown in for colouring but could be wrong...might contain wee also.

OP posts:
yellowrose · 18/04/2007 17:51

you can buy organic white bread, it has less shite in it
