What do you serve with a gammon joint?

I have the in-laws coming to Sunday lunch this week and have bought a gammon joint to cook ('ooo I've not had that for a while I thought' as I dashed round Asda). However now I'm a bit stumped as to what to serve with it.

Do roast potatoes go? What about gravy? if so what sort of gravy?

Ideas please!

it's quite sweet gammon (has yours got a glaze on it?)

I normally do a creamy mash and sweetcorn and sometimes if there's any honey glaze left over, I use that for a bit of sauce.

Mash or jacket spuds (fancy veg mash if you want to show off )
any old veg - peas? carrots?
My mum always did white/parsley sauce

AitchTwoOh · 07/03/2007 23:08

i like it with puy lentils and, something like green beans or purple sprouting broccoli.

malaleche · 07/03/2007 23:09

apple sauce and mashed or boiled potatoes

MrsSpoon · 07/03/2007 23:09

Last time I made Nigella's Ham in Coca Cola for guests we had potato gratin and spiced red cabbage with it (IIRC this combo was recommended to me on MN) and it was scrummy.

I often do gammon with cauliflower cheese.

Or you could do mash (maybe potato and sweet potato, with loads of butter, cream and lots of black pepper) and corn on the cob.

I wouldn't have gravy with gammon though. You could have roasties - but somehow mash goes better, I don't know why

DrMarthaMcMoo · 07/03/2007 23:11

Or you could do roasted vegetables - butternut squash, sweet potato, courgettes, potato, carrots, parsnips - cut into similar sized chunks and roast with olive oil.

My friend, who is Irish, is always boiling a gammon and serves it with savoy cabbage, mashed pots and cheese sauce. Simple but yummy.

AitchTwoOh · 08/03/2007 00:28

pmsl at 'My friend, who is Irish, is always boiling a gammon'. those damned paddies...

pretendmum · 08/03/2007 00:34

Mash potato, peas, maybe roast carrots or squash and definately parsley sauce!

luciemule · 08/03/2007 10:15

Yes- wasn't really sure why I added she was Irish! I'm sure gammon in Ireland is the same as it is here!!!

When I was a child, we always had gammon with pineapple pieces and my mother made a sort of pineapple sauce for the gravy. I hated it and never buy gammon now except to cool for ham.

hoolagirl · 08/03/2007 11:55

What about a nice creamy potato bake and also some kind of veg? broccoli? Oh and chuck some pinapple on the gammon.
I also advise par boiling the potatoes first if your not as great a cook as me

hoolagirl · 08/03/2007 11:55

Sorry, I meant I am dodgy at cooking, not that Im 'great' !!

USAUKMum · 08/03/2007 12:05

I like a nice creamy potato gratin and carrots with mine. And some nice chutney if you have some.

massagemum · 08/03/2007 12:09

Ohhh boxing day dinner

Boiled gammon, mashed potatoes, peas, sweetcorn, carrots and pickles!!!

Lots and lots of them, beetroot, red cabbage, gherkins and pickled onions. With branston and pickalili pickle.

Yum, may even go to asda now!!

Totti123 · 13/04/2014 18:12

Gammon, chips, fried egg, garden peas and pineapple slices. That is how I have always made it. These 5 ingredients go perfectly. My other half makes a Sunday roast with Gammon but I always suggest that gammon and gravy do not go..........very sickly.

Eileen11 · 04/04/2015 10:22

My kids love it with hot potato salad (boil new potatoes cut in half/quarters) drain and add a couple of chopped spring onions and 1-2 tablespoons of mayonnaise - even people/kids who don't normally like spring onions make these disappear really fast and it's so quick and easy - add some of your favourite veg - perfect!

Howaboutthisone · 04/04/2015 11:53

Nigellas doc peaches are delicious with gamma joint. Dc don't have those here though as they're too spicy for them!

Howaboutthisone · 04/04/2015 11:54

*spicy not doc!

RoosterCogburnIsInTheJakes · 04/04/2015 11:58

Mashed potato, curly kale and parsley sauce.

Ludways · 04/04/2015 12:00

I usually do cauliflower cheese, the creaminess is nice with the saltiness of the gammon. Then peas, sweetcorn and mash.

HoraceCope · 04/04/2015 12:03

mash or roast potatoes and roast parsnips
mashed swede and carrot
peas
white cabbage

HoraceCope · 04/04/2015 12:05
