Weird Solo Meals?

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 11:27

I can't seem to bring myself to cook for just myself. So I eat weird leftover things.

Today's (early) lunch: cottage cheese and homemade spicy ratatouille. Eaten cold. Yum.

What weird things does everyone else eat?

Does this count?

My brother used to take Peanut butter & marmalade sandwiches to school...

...but only because they were so horrid that no one would pinch them!

NotQuiteCockney · 06/11/2006 23:10

Peanut butter and marmelade is perfectly lovely! I have it all the time! What on earth do English people have against perfectly normal peanut butter combinations? Chip butties are normal here, but peanut butter and marmelade is weird? Freaks. Every last one of you. :-P

I like peanut butter and banana - can I be your friend now

NotQuiteCockney · 07/11/2006 08:12

I grew up on peanut butter and banana, it's a lovely sandwich. People do seem to have some strange rules about peanut butter, though. I met an American who was offended by one of peanut butter and honey, or peanut butter and jam, but not the other.

I also quite like peanut butter and molasses, but I'd admit that's a bit strange. (Peanut butter and cream cheese is also very good.)

NQC pssst please can I direct you to my stocking fillers in Central London thread???

PyroPaps · 07/11/2006 08:17

toast with butter, miso and slices of apples

FrannyonFire · 07/11/2006 08:18

ps I like peanut butter with banana too, but when I was nannying, one of the girls had to make the favourite sandwich of someone they knew, for school work, and she chose me. All the other children made fun of her weird sandwich and she was quite upset!

FrannyonFire · 07/11/2006 08:48

Bother have missed you NQC, may phone you when I am on the way (am coming to town today but not meeting anyone because I Must Shop )

NotQuiteCockney · 07/11/2006 08:48

I am here!

Pretty passionate about weird English habits, huh? You ever heard of ethnocentricity? I mean, it's one thing to bang on about carbs n' carbs - yep, unhealthy, you are right, it is odd, that's why we have Gillian McKeith - but then to claim peanut butter + whateverthefuckyoulike is comparatively normal... that's buggered your argument somewhat.

I'm off to make one of those Canadian specialities, yoghurt with no culture.

FrannyonFire · 07/11/2006 20:11

Was that a jokey "ha ha me old mate" post or just very rude?

Can't tell from where I'm standing.

dodgykeeper · 07/11/2006 20:23

I can never be bothered to do anything interesting when dh is away on business so its usually cereal for dinner or sometimes pasta with mayo. I also like avocado with ketchup as a quick meal - noone ever wants to join me for that one though.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/11/2006 20:23

It just looked really rude to me, but what do I know?

I live in the UK, and yes, I'm sometimes rude about some of it.

Obviously, food combinations are entirely arbitrary, and I realise peanut butter isn't exactly a normal option.

How was shopping, Frances? I'm actually debating going into town myself tomorrow, thanks to some weird events ...

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 07/11/2006 20:25

Ok, avocado and ketchup is boaktastic, full points!

OP posts:
Monologue · 07/11/2006 20:33

Redressing the balance slightly.
Probably a little rude but if you're gonna dish it out, you gotta be prepared to take it...

FrannyonFire · 07/11/2006 20:47

Yes but NQC's was affectionate and joky, Monologue, plus she likes to poke fun at her own peculiarities too

yours just seemed aggressive, Monologue, or did it just not translate well onto the screen?

NQC, shopping v good, will report on other thread shortly

Greensleeves · 07/11/2006 20:48

....and peanut butter is a very versatile food. Everyone knows that.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/11/2006 21:19

Peanut butter is the very Stuff of Life. I keep having to explain to Brits that North Americans feel about peanut butter the way most Brits do about tea. (No wonder North Americans are fat.)

I was being silly calling all English people freaks. Drunk, too.

But if I was going to start calling English people freaks directly, I'd probably start with Gillian McPoo. Surely she exists solely to show that you can eat a healthy diet and still look like a weird shrivelled weirdy.

(If you want to see foreigners really bitching about England, you should see the "What don't you get about the UK" thread from a while back ...)

elclose · 07/11/2006 21:26

gillian mcpoo lived most of her life in america

elclose · 07/11/2006 21:32

whole earth peanut butter is divine i often eat it on toast with a mashed banana
i also love bacon and banana on toast

NotQuiteCockney · 07/11/2006 21:51

I flirt with the "salty and sweet together" thing (I went through a brief phase of loving those pretzels with chocolate on them), but bacon and banana doesn't appeal at all. The texture has to be a bit strange, for one thing ...

Monologue · 07/11/2006 22:04

It didn't seem all that affectionate, Franny, or maybe it just didn't translate well onto screen? [tongue-in-cheek emoticon]

Read thread in one go, started off amused then got bored of same message about how crap the English diet is, yawn.

Although point taken and I think English people eat far too much meat as well as the ubiquitous carb.

Whole Earth PB is The Dog's.

Monologue · 07/11/2006 22:06

PS: NQC, oh but English people ARE all drunks
