Weird Solo Meals?

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 11:27

I can't seem to bring myself to cook for just myself. So I eat weird leftover things.

Today's (early) lunch: cottage cheese and homemade spicy ratatouille. Eaten cold. Yum.

What weird things does everyone else eat?

Hmm, SPD presumably cut down on your exercise options, though, first time around? Were you lighter at the end of the pregnancy with DS2 than DS1? I'm pretty sure diet, weight and exercise (and age) make a real difference for GD, they certainly do for normal type 2 diabetes ...

NQC - at least you know it is a short term blip and at least it was home baking!

Greeny (is it greeny?) - I am amazed you has a DS2 after all that! You are a brave woman!

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 15:23

(And I'm surprised you could be bothered doing it all again, after all that with DS1!)

Oh yes, you should see pictures of me about to have ds1, I looked like Mr Staypuft out of Ghostbusters after 6 months of no activity, and the pre-eclampsia oedema. You've met me, so you know I am no Tinkerbell, but I am half the size I was at the end of that pregnancy.

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 15:23

No, not brave, just stupid and stubborn

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 15:23

My normal routine requires stupid amounts of exercise, so that has to fix itself as of next week. And yeah, home baking is at least better than icky store bought. I probably need to make another cake today, though, but we'll have company tomorrow to eat it ...

There ya go, that's what made the difference. GD isn't fated to happen, it's closely tied to all the same things that cause regular type 2.

the best diet I have ever tried was pregnancy I felt less hungry and was more compelled to eat healithy and as a result I was the same weight at the end of ech as I was at the start so after the birth I had lost 2 stone each time - It all went back on in between though! Both boys were over 8lbs too!

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 15:30

ds1 was 8lb7 at 35 weeks, and ds2 was 9lb2 at 38 weeks - big bruisers!

schneebly · 02/11/2006 15:32

that is big greeny! MIL had gestational diabetes and DH was 10lb 8 OUCH!

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 15:33

I dread to think how big ds1 would have been if he had been full term

schneebly · 02/11/2006 15:38

yes greeny - think you would have had an 11 pounder on your hands!

FireFaerie · 03/11/2006 10:01

wierd food i used to eat when i was left to my own devices in the kitvhen was 2 slices of cheese stuck together with nutella.. used to think it was the best thing in the world! dont even think i could try it again now though!

um, sorry if this has been mentioned, read most of posts but not every one. on the carb front what about the indian.. poppadoms, nann, rice, and sag aloo (which translates to sage potato) or some other curry type. also, i think our obsession with chips.. or my obsession is they are hot, quick, and costs on average of a pound... and smell too good to walk past

BexieID · 03/11/2006 10:24

Tomato Ketchup, preferably as a toasted sandwich.

mamijacacalys · 03/11/2006 10:40

Cereal straight out of the packet (a la Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson in Love Actually). This cultural delight was introduced to me by my best mate in our student hovel when there was no milk left, natch.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/11/2006 10:57

FireFaerie, we did get into the Indian thing. But we don't think actual Indian food gets into the "carb, with carb, and shavings of carb, with a side of carb" thing.

I might need to change my solo eating habits, at least at dinner - a nice Thai place has opened at the end of my road, and their green papaya salad is to die for ...

Cheese and jam sandwiches. Bring 'em on!

becaroo · 03/11/2006 14:29

Bit ashamed to admit this....potato waffle sandwiches - white bread, butter and brown sauce. YUM YUM

Wisp · 03/11/2006 15:12

I have a few weird things I like;
Salt and vinegar crisps dipped in strawberry yoghurt. I don't have it anymore but lived on it most nights as a teenager!!
I Adore peanut butter with raw onion in sandwiches
Also honey and peanut butter
Baked beans with peanut butter mixed in and curry powder and tabasco
I have a peanut butter theme going on here don't I......?

VanillaMilkshake · 03/11/2006 16:04

Here are my funny faves:

Jalepeno peppers on doritos
Salted Ritz with Nutella
Cheese and Honey sandwiches
Dagwood Bumstead sandwiches (huge big stacked sandwiches including cheeses, pickled onions, beetroot, cucumber, salad cream, lettuce, ham or tuna) Ooh salavating at the thought!

candytuft · 03/11/2006 16:36

My fav is ready salted crisp sandwich with ketchup and Dairylea. Lurvely. (you have to crunch the crisps up in the packet and mix with ketchup first).

Potato waffle sandwiches! Aaargh!

I had cottage cheese and ratatouille for lunch again today. Someone else can have my carbs.

When I was pg with DS2 I was hooked on Dagwood Bumstead sarnies - mine were:

  • plain omelette
  • cheese
  • chorizo
  • tomato
  • mustard
  • mayo

Yum, must make those again.

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 03/11/2006 16:45

(Do I need to say the sarnies are with brown bread? Well, malted, ideally.)
