Weird Solo Meals?

I can't seem to bring myself to cook for just myself. So I eat weird leftover things.

Today's (early) lunch: cottage cheese and homemade spicy ratatouille. Eaten cold. Yum.

What weird things does everyone else eat?

I should be more sensible about meals on my own. I am lazy, though, and just forage randomly, and end up eating crap. (cottage cheese and ratatouille isn't crap, obviously)

Hmmm, the Scandihoovians drink lots don't they? I don't think they have a white carb obsession, I'll have to ask a Scandi ...

Fruit cake and cheddar cheese ( really strong and crumbly) is a great favourite of mine

foxinsocks · 02/11/2006 12:21

I love crisp sandwiches - has to be white bread, loads of butter and preferably ready salted crisps (or sometimes cheese and onion).

Or baked potato with a sauce of mayo, raw onions and curry powder mixed in.

I'm not a fussy eater though so I'll chomp most things on offer.

bundle · 02/11/2006 12:24

i'm sorry nqc but rice just isn't going to work in a sandwich.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 12:26

Why not?

Maybe rice cakes? Rice noodles? Mixed with regular pasta? And maybe some polenta?

actually my fave solo meal is a chip butty, preferably dripping with nasty gravy

but that's not weird cos lots of english folk like those

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 12:28

No, wait, I have it! Mix the rice (and couscous, and pasta) with mash, to hold it all together! Then put it in a sandwich!

Ok, where's my knighthood? I've invented the uber-carb sarnie!

mmm you can only put rice in a sandwich if it has curry mixed in with it - then you can shove all the curry and rice leftovers between 2 pieces of bread

AnAngelWithin · 02/11/2006 12:30

ok. i have had chicken curry with rice in a sandwhich before

peanut butter and banana sandwhiches

fish finger sandwhiches

cottage pie sandwhiches are dhs favourite lol

PeachyBobbingParty · 02/11/2006 12:54

Ah, you just sue pitta bread then rice is fine. I actually rather like just white bread, nbothing eslse at all, note ven spread- yum . or potato cake sarnies. But the fave here is fish finger sarnies, but only decent quality.

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 12:56

I used to eat white bread on its own, I used to pull the crusts off it and then roll it into balls, make little cubes etc, it was such a gummy texture. But that was at boarding school where there really wasn't anything else edible on offer. I wouldn't touch white bread now, unless it was a really good French stick or poppy-seeded bloomer or something.

FrannyonFire · 02/11/2006 12:58

I always like the idea of white sliced, and then if you ever have it, it's just so disappointing. That pain de campagne loaf they have in Sainy's is bloody nice, though. And the white bread that dp makes in the breadmaker when we have run out of wholemeal flour is also pretty good.

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOT · 02/11/2006 13:00

Yes proper good white bread can be lovely, especially with a nice thick soup or some good cheese. I mean the sort of no frills 16p a loaf gummy stuff. Grim. But I used to live almost exclusively on it, and green apples, and black coffee

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 13:00

Of course. Sandwiches with poor quality fish fingers would be gross.

Where's that puking emoticon?

Pmsl at this thread. You?re right about the carbs NQC. Our canteen regularly serves, for example, pasta with a tonato sauce and chips! WTF? I demand brocolli instead and am looked on as a weirdo.

However, in answer to original post, if DH is out for the evening and the smalls are eating to early for me, I will eat buttered digestives and cheese or just slice an avocado n to a plate with a little olive oil. Is that odd? Just cannot be doing with cooking just for me.

bundle · 02/11/2006 13:27

curry n rice fine, you need goo to hold grains together.

colditz · 02/11/2006 13:29

For the squillianth time there is nothing wrong with cheap fishfingers, it is all fish, it's all free range, there is nothing in tghere that will do you ny more damage than expensive fish fingers!

Celery · 02/11/2006 13:41

A packet of Batchelors Chinese rice with a big dollop of butter, creme fraiche and a squeeze of tomato puree mixed in. Yum.

AnAngelWithin · 02/11/2006 13:44

CELERY......EWWWWWWW!!!

NotQuiteCockney · 02/11/2006 14:14

I often see pasta + chips on offer in cafes around here. Also, lasagne and chips. Do other cultures have this weird carb obsession?

OP posts:
FrannyonFire · 02/11/2006 14:20

Lasagne and garlic bread is the one that gets me. Everywhere you go, the veggie option is pasta, garlic bread, and salad. I don't want salad - I want veggies the same as everyone else, and if you must give me extra carb, chips is much better IMO

Enid · 02/11/2006 14:21

leftover curry at 10.30am

yum

sardines on toast (ok not weird but noone else in the family likes them)

rollmops

Enid · 02/11/2006 14:22
