Morning folks,

A quick heads-up. Some of you (particularly those of you who put in the hours testing the recipes Grin) may recall that we've been working on a Mumsnet cook book of your favourite, foolproof family recipes for some time now.

Well it's being published by Bloomsbury on Thursday 8th June and you can buy a copy of it over on Amazon.

Thanks again for all your help with the book - it literally (and we mean that literally) wouldn't exist without you. And if you're after a warm glow, check out what no less a kitchen superstar than Yotam Ottolenghi had to say about it:

"Family recipes - tried and tested... and tested... and tested - win hands down in any tasting competition I have ever attended. This book is an ultimate collection of such winners: reliable, useful and, most importantly, completely delicious."

ANOTHER UPDATE: We've added another video of the lovely RebeccaMumsnet demo-ing which we ate and was utterly delish.

UPDATE: We got the lovely RebeccaMumsnet to try her hand at the - see the (rather good) results for yourself...

The Mumsnet family cookbook is now out!

Thumbs up for the Lumberjack Stew. Had a crazy busy day on Saturday and knew I needed something easy for dinner, so popped this into the slow cooker before everything kicked off.

Five hours later, was just about to serve tea when an unexpected family turned up which made THIRTEEN of us. I won't say we were all full, but it certainly kept us going (with a bottle of wine).

Ace - am wondering what to try next... If you could find a moment to review on Amazon & Mumsnet at some point, we'd be eternally grateful.

Got the hands off tomato sauce in the oven - if this works it's genius - less faffy than my current hidden veg sauce...
... Sighing that fussy kids have turned me into someone who makes hidden veg tomato sauce. I vowed I never would be that person.
Report to follow!

TallRedhead · 21/05/2014 12:51

My copy has just arrived - Amazon £13.40!
Think I may surprise my dh with the fluffy eggs for sat morning breakfast!

useless cook who hopes this book will transform her

TallRedhead · 21/05/2014 13:04

Review posted on here and I will do Amazon later Smile

hotteaorcoldwine · 21/05/2014 13:53

Made the broccoli fritters...but of a faff grating an entire head of broccoli...would this work with sticking it in a mini food processor do you think?

Other recipes look fab :-)

Aliama · 22/05/2014 08:55

Forgot to mention I made the Chicken Scooter recipe a while back. Lovely, and very easy although some of the veg wasn't quite done after the specified time.

My free copy arrived today, thank you. I have immediately picked out Heavenly Chocolate Tray Bake (minus the nuts) for my children to make tonight and take to school tomorrow. Will have a good browse later, really like the quick meals chapter on first glance plus the one pot wonders....

Cantdothisagain · 22/05/2014 13:35

The tray bake is lovely, AnonymousBird...

AnonymousBird · 22/05/2014 14:53

Good Good, thanks for that Cantdothisagain, as we have very limited making time tonight and it looks quick and perfect for our needs and no baking, just fridge time is ideal!

AnonymousBird · 23/05/2014 18:46

The Heavenly Chocolate Tray Bake was amazing. It was the first plate to sell out at the cake sale!

Cantdothisagain · 23/05/2014 21:57

Yay! I loved it too.

AnonymousBird · 24/05/2014 16:15

Have also had some success with 3 minute sponge. I need to have another go to perfect our technique!

glorious · 25/05/2014 16:28

Mmmm the devil on horseback bread is delicious. First attempt at anything in the slow cooker on the way (kleftiko, smells lovely).

Numbers123 · 25/05/2014 17:11

Hi ladies,

I cooked the feta, spinach and mushroom pie in filo pastry receipe yesterday - was yummy but no one would try it without meat...ahhh!

So suggestions? I was thinking chicken would go well with it but no idea as to how much to add or at what stage I add it (is it ok just browned off)? so if anyone has done this recepe and added meat to it, please shout

CatherineHMumsnet · 26/05/2014 11:58

Anonymousbird - success on the school cake stall - that's the best challenge yet for one of our recipes!

TallRedhead - thanks. EVERY review on Amazon makes a real difference.

Cantdothisagain · 26/05/2014 21:11

Mexican chilli chicken was the easiest dish I've ever made I think! And it went down v well- and could be tinkered with - amazingly easy good food.

zipzap · 26/05/2014 22:25

Numbers Make the pie again and call it chicken surprise pie - then when they eat it and like it - they discover that they do actually like a pie without meat in.

The surprise is that there is no chicken, it escaped Grin

ThePhysicianUnknown · 28/05/2014 18:00

So, I made ham today.

Basically, this means that with a £4 gammon joint I've made the same amount and quality of ham that I would buy from the butchers for, well, more than £4! It's really good ham.

And the brownies! If you have the book, you have to try the brownies. I've made two lots!

We've tried a few of the other recipes and personally I would tweak them a bit, but that's the joy of cooking.

I'll try and review properly on Amazon later.

AnonymousBird · 29/05/2014 14:35

Catherine - it sold out in minutes apparently. DS rather brazenly put £1.00 on each slice (Shock) as opposed to the usual 50p and this did not deter the punters at all!!!!

I did the ham, which was delicious, though IMHO the rub needs combining with a teensy bit of water in order to stick to the ham for basting (or did I miss something in the instructions?!). Good combo though.

The DC have just made Victorious Sponge with almost no intervention from me, other than in and out of the oven. It looks quite thin, however, I think once it has filling etc it is going to come good. Will report back once they've got the finished article!

We are on a roll with the book, so far so good, but I want to try out a few more before doing a more rounded Amazon review.

AnonymousBird · 29/05/2014 14:40

And, I must add that, like one of the Amazon reviewers, it might have been helpful in the (delicious sounding) slow cook chapter to have a quick alternative. I am going to assume that generally it will be "lob it in the casserole and in at a low temp for X hours", but I don't have a slow cooker and (gasp horror) I have absolutely no intention of getting one so that is my one slight disappointment so far. Won't stop me trying them out though!

JustineMumsnet · 29/05/2014 20:48

Well I did "the vitamin injection" soup today - which I admit is not the catchiest title but it was delicious. (I used a packet of pre chopped squash and sweet potato so it was even easier).

Also made the Soda bread to go with it. Now that is an amazing recipe - can't believe I can make break with no yeast, kneading etc. (I would say I found it impossible to pick it up and make a ball - was too runny so I just dolloped it onto baking tray with a spoon - but that was possibly cos I used semi-skimmed not whole milk?)

BeattieBow · 02/06/2014 10:02

I made the ladies who lunch tart yesterday. Sadly not for ladies who lunch, but for the dcs.

They loved it! so well done. It's now on my menu list. Tonight its the pasta/ricotta bake. (it's a week of mn recipes for us this week - next week it's a Girl Called Jack!).

Unfortunately the night before the sweet potato thai red curry didn't go down well - it was too spicy for all of them (I liked it though!).

Cantdothisagain · 02/06/2014 10:23

Brownies were a hit here too. And the pork and apple casserole worked well for fussy kids and grown ups alike. Kleftiko on menu for later this week.

barefootcook · 03/06/2014 10:07

Has anyone tried the ice cream cone cupcakes? I am keen to make them for a birthday party but will need to bake them the day before. If I do this, will the come go soggy?
