Morning folks,

A quick heads-up. Some of you (particularly those of you who put in the hours testing the recipes Grin) may recall that we've been working on a Mumsnet cook book of your favourite, foolproof family recipes for some time now.

Well it's being published by Bloomsbury on Thursday 8th June and you can buy a copy of it over on Amazon.

Thanks again for all your help with the book - it literally (and we mean that literally) wouldn't exist without you. And if you're after a warm glow, check out what no less a kitchen superstar than Yotam Ottolenghi had to say about it:

"Family recipes - tried and tested... and tested... and tested - win hands down in any tasting competition I have ever attended. This book is an ultimate collection of such winners: reliable, useful and, most importantly, completely delicious."

ANOTHER UPDATE: We've added another video of the lovely RebeccaMumsnet demo-ing which we ate and was utterly delish.

UPDATE: We got the lovely RebeccaMumsnet to try her hand at the - see the (rather good) results for yourself...

Psst - we've now added another video of the lovely RebeccaMumsnet ably demonstrating how to make the (rather delish) Cheat's Tandoori Chicken. Have a look! And do subscribe to our YouTube channel - lots of great foodie stuff - and other useful tips and how-tos - in the pipeline.

CatherineHMumsnet · 15/05/2014 14:18

ZipZap - they're already up. If you look to the left of the book cover there are thumbnails of spreads that you can click on.

missorinoco · 15/05/2014 19:21

My book has just arrived. I own lots of cookery books, but this will be one of the gems amongst it.

First recipe is being cooked tomorrow.

Minor gripe - there's so much pork in it. Pancetta in the pasta recipes etc. I understand why it is needed , but if anyone can suggest a substitute I would be eternally grateful. The only substitute I can think of is anchovies which sounds too salty.

JulesJules · 15/05/2014 19:46

Made the 3 minute sponge for the dds tonight - at their request I made it orange sponge with chocolate sauce. It got the OmNomNom song which means it's a hit!

KateMumsnet · 15/05/2014 21:53

Oh good lord JulesJules - a chocolate orange-stroke-sponge pudding?! I have the ingredients for that right now and I am SORELY tempted...

zipzap · 16/05/2014 00:08

Thanks for that CatherineMumsnet - I can see them now.

To be honest, I was looking for the 'Click to look inside' logo on the picture of the book cover in the listings (several of the books that came up during the search did have it so it was obvious that Top Bananas didn't have it) so by the time I had opened up the TB page, the fact I already knew (IYSWIM) that I couldn't 'click to look inside' meant that I completely missed the the extra page images as I'd already mentally ticked that off my list as not there if that makes sense...

missorinoco · 16/05/2014 21:30

The prawn and broccoli noodle dish was a big hit.

glorious · 17/05/2014 07:41

Mine's arrived and I just want to ask whether you're trying to ruin all our diets?! 3 minute sponge and, even worse, 60 second cheesecake! Mmmmmmm Grin

Will this be the thing that finally convinces me buy a slow cooker?

smallinthesmoke · 17/05/2014 10:52

Really like this book. Just to be superficial, it's a great object- nice weighty hardback with quality paper and the photos are lovely. Full marks to the publishing team.
I'm a culinary fuckwit so things like recipes for fairy cakes and strawberry sauce are right up my street. There are even some more complicated things in it that I can- shock!- imagine making. That would surprise the hell out of my family who know I only have three recipes.. and one of them is spag bol.
DH doesn't like it quite so much though. Complains there is "too much wittering" at the beginning of each recipe. I said, it's MN in-jokes you know. He did a big sigh and said... I KNOW. Still he said he would try making some of the meaty recipes despite the "wittering" so.... result!
Grin

smallinthesmoke · 17/05/2014 10:53

Perhaps I will start with the lemon drizzle cake. There is a school fair coming up.

TheSkiingGardener · 17/05/2014 20:15

Found the book in Tesco (£9, hurrah!). Its brilliant. We had the eggy bread this morning and are having tandoori chicken tonight. DS will be making the fruity buns soon too.

I love the speed of the recipes, that's the absolute selling point for me. The only minor gripe I have is that they keep saying that this book is to help you learn to cook. I can already cook thank you very much, was just after quick recipe inspiration!

TheSkiingGardener · 17/05/2014 22:12

Just reviewed it on Amazon too. Hope it's doing well.

TheSkiingGardener · 18/05/2014 09:37

Well my 3 year old (nearly 4 to be fair) made the one pot fruity buns this morning with only the tiniest bit of help (zesting the lemon and finishing the scooping) and they look bloody fantastic.

I have the serialised extracts from the Times, and made the Goodness Gravy with our roast chicken today, which was a HUGE hit, very fussy DD ate loads of dinner with it and pronounced it "really yummy!". Normally I am a granules girl BlushBlushBlush but this has changed my mind! so thank you Thanks

The actual book is on my birthday list...

Aboyandabunny · 19/05/2014 08:12

We had the Thai Curry Sweet Potatoes last night with Chicken. I was 'ace' according to DS.
Salmon Espanol tonight.

CatherineHMumsnet · 19/05/2014 13:59

TheSkiingGardener - thanks for that. Those one pot buns look very impressive.

And if anyone else feels minded to pop along to Amazon and review that'd be great too!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/05/2014 14:57

Just got my £9 copy in Tesco. Perfect timing for half term next week!

Not had chance to peruse it closely yet but first impressions are good - thick, glossy pages with lots of photos.

I will report back and review once I've had a closer look and tried out a recipe or 2.

glorious · 20/05/2014 08:10

Ooh, good feature in the metro this morning Smile

PoppyAmex · 20/05/2014 15:45

Disclaimers first:

  • I just received my copy (bought full price too) so I haven't tried any recipe yet
  • I tested a recipe, adore to cook and always thought the idea of a MN cookbook is amazing, so I suppose I'm a captive audience

Having said that, I'm so disappointed with the poor styling and photography;

The picture on page 79 (the Broccoli and Mushroom Soup) actually made me feel slightly revolted.

I can guess the idea behind the concept, but the soup looks horrid and the bits of chewed up food everywhere are just gross.

Really want to come back and rave about the recipes.

onetiredmummy · 20/05/2014 17:53

I bought it too and waiting for it to arrive Grin Grin Grin Grin will review in Amazon once its here. I like to do long reviews as well Smile

CatherineHMumsnet · 20/05/2014 17:57

Hi PoppyAmex - sorry to hear that you didn't like the look of the book. Have to say it was a conscious decision we made not to make the photographs look too stylised or unachievable. But hopefully the recipes will change your mind!

AnonymousBird · 20/05/2014 18:11

Cannot wait for my giveaway copy to arrive!!!!

Ladyflip · 20/05/2014 21:13

Tempted to get the book as i have made the 3 minute sponge recipe this evening to the great delight of DC and a spare child who was visiting. It was great!

Cantdothisagain · 20/05/2014 21:37

Made the origami fish tonight - it's not a new recipe and I make variants of it already but it's a nice version.

Beef stifado tomorrow...

plus3 · 20/05/2014 22:07

It is always out of stock at my local Tesco. May get to buy it at some point...
