Morning folks,

A quick heads-up. Some of you (particularly those of you who put in the hours testing the recipes Grin) may recall that we've been working on a Mumsnet cook book of your favourite, foolproof family recipes for some time now.

Well it's being published by Bloomsbury on Thursday 8th June and you can buy a copy of it over on Amazon.

Thanks again for all your help with the book - it literally (and we mean that literally) wouldn't exist without you. And if you're after a warm glow, check out what no less a kitchen superstar than Yotam Ottolenghi had to say about it:

"Family recipes - tried and tested... and tested... and tested - win hands down in any tasting competition I have ever attended. This book is an ultimate collection of such winners: reliable, useful and, most importantly, completely delicious."

ANOTHER UPDATE: We've added another video of the lovely RebeccaMumsnet demo-ing which we ate and was utterly delish.

UPDATE: We got the lovely RebeccaMumsnet to try her hand at the - see the (rather good) results for yourself...

The Mumsnet family cookbook is now out!

Ancientbuchanan, SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius - very pleased to hear you liked the recipes.

Willem - the book's actually published this Thursday. You can buy it here.

Cozietosie - we'd love to do another book if folk like this one. Have you put that recipe on our Recipes section on Mumsnet?

And Serin - do try and grab a look at the book in a shop if you can. We think you'll like what you see. We're very proud of it.

Cantdothisagain · 06/05/2014 11:40

I bought it in Waterstones yesterday. I think it is a great resource for family food - not just chicken nuggets and chips - some recipes do seem a bit unnecessary (eg basic fairy cakes) but I guess that means it will be a good resource for a beginner cook. Surprised by fact that there was not much with mince in it as people here seem to talk about mince a lot! There are some good tips in it and the slow cooker chapter is great- also liked the cooking with kids chapter. Nothing radically new - and lots you will already have your own recipes for - but it's all easy stuff you wouldn't necessarily think of which is very useful with small kids. And easy to get ingredients. Oh and the chapter introductions read well. Don't like the title much but I definitely think this is better than the Annabel K set of books (yuck) and the sheer number of recipes is great.

Went and rearranged the display to make it more prominent and got my local indy book store to order some stock YAY!

Mignonette · 06/05/2014 12:33

Did you use hot Paprika instead of sweet SDT?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/05/2014 16:20

I used smoked paprika, Mignonette - I think it must have been hotter than I thought it was!

I will definitely be making it again, but I will be a bit more conservative with the spicing. It was really lush!

Cantdothisagain · 06/05/2014 17:52

DD2 and I have tried our first recipe - chocolate bribe biscuits. They are really good! And very easy. Definitely will be repeated. I suspect it shows our priorities that we started in the baking chapter, and with chocolate, too...

Mignonette · 06/05/2014 18:22

Am going to try that recipe SDT. You have sold it to me. HQ should have you on commission!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/05/2014 19:07

We had it in buns, with apple sauce, as recommended, and I made coleslaw to go with - and I have leftovers!

Reastie · 06/05/2014 20:52

Kindle edition not due out until September Sad

CatherineHMumsnet · 07/05/2014 15:19

Gold star for Mignonette!

Can'tdothisagain - very pleased to hear you liked it. And clearly starting with chocolate is the only way to go.

Reastie - can we persuade you to revert to ye olde print? It really is the most beautiful looking book

Mignonette · 07/05/2014 15:42

Why thank you

CatherineHMumsnet · 07/05/2014 21:23

So - here's my attempt from the book that I knocked up tonight. Speedy soda bread - p208. Start to finish about 35 minutes.

The Mumsnet family cookbook is now out!
Cantdothisagain · 07/05/2014 21:29

The biscuits are much less nice the next day - worth eating the batch in one go (!) I reckon as by today they really didn't taste as good.

Soda bread looks good and easy Catherine - was it?

I can't decide what to try next. Like the look of loads of recipes - there really is a good range in the book.

CatherineHMumsnet · 07/05/2014 21:31

Cantdothisagain - super easy. Whole point is not to do too much to it - so my kind of recipe.
Amazed ANY biscuits lasted for longer than a day. Impressed by your family's willpower.

Cantdothisagain · 07/05/2014 21:47

Thanks Catherine; will give this a go I think. We all like bread!!

funnyperson · 08/05/2014 04:28

I think the usernames of those who contributed the original recipes should be included, because even if the recipes were reworked and tested, the inspiration came from the contributors. Mumsnet is nothing without its contributors, the contributors are mumsnet. A recipe book by a corporate person is so much less interesting than a recipe book by a group of real mums.
It has made me stop and think. We share ideas and knowledge as well as opinions and experience on the mumsnet threads. When it becomes 'the intellectual property of mumsnet' does that mean that mumsnet is going to assume the right to the business exploitation of its contributor's posts without any acknowledgement? This would seem a bit extreme to me. Also of course it makes for a better book if the contributors get their byline (as long as they agree to be named)

CatherineHMumsnet · 08/05/2014 10:43

And may we make a plea - if you've got the book and like it - PLEASE do pop along to Amazon and post a review which you can now do.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/05/2014 11:59

I made soda bread once - a beautiful, wholemeal loaf, encrusted with all sorts of seeds. I had a slice, dh and ds1 had a slice, and I left the rest safely (I thought) on the kitchen table, in a plastic box, whilst we all went out.

Bloody bastard dog stole it and ate it all. Angry

CatherineHMumsnet · 08/05/2014 12:25

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius Nooooo! If it makes you feel any better, I left the sandwich I'd made for lunch with it at home on the counter in the kitchen today and only realised when I arrived at MNHQ.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/05/2014 12:28

We need Cake to soothe our pain, Catherine.

Viviennemary · 08/05/2014 12:42

I've just gone to Amazon and no reviews yet. Looking forward to reading them. Just one thing sometimes you can search inside book at Amazon which I always like to do and it usually makes me buy it.

CatherineHMumsnet · 08/05/2014 14:17

Viviennemary - if you look at our cookbook page there's now a sneak peek inside the book.

Viviennemary · 08/05/2014 15:14

Thanks very much. I'll go and look now.

Mignonette · 08/05/2014 15:20

Who devised the Mutant Ginger Turtle cookies?

Most excellent!

I have now persuaded three local book shops to order it in.

Spikeinhiscoat · 08/05/2014 16:44

I've just ordered my copy (thanks, MN), and look forward to salivating over the recipes (I hope it becomes a much-used reference, as I need some new ideas)
