Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

Fuzz-I'm the same, I'm up all night if I drink coke in the evening. There's 9tsp of sugar in a glass too iirc, that's an incredible amount for the body to cope with in one hit plus caffeine too if you're not used to it. Hope you're feeling less anxious now.

fuzzpig · 22/04/2014 15:44

I'm fine today thanks :) just tired from lack of sleep!

I thought it'd be fine as it was lunchtime but clearly not! No sugar either (coke zero, I have preferred that/Pepsi max since morning sickness in second pregnancy) so although sweeteners are shit (I try to avoid them in all foods/drinks apart from the occasional soda) I think it was the caffeine that made me crazy. I mean really crazy. Ugh.

Aspartame is worse than sugar though.Caffeine is crazy stuff Grin

fuzzpig · 22/04/2014 16:50

But so tasty in cola form :o

I have to avoid chocolate in the evening too due to the caffeine!

Oh and in other news, if anyone's interested Tesco have now reduced the cost of their delivery saver plans AND reduced the minimum spend from £40 to £25. Really pleased about this as it means it will be easier to do two smaller shops a week without spending silly money.

Bramshott · 22/04/2014 18:07

I had a bad night last night too - I'm putting it down to an end of the holidays, return to mental busy-ness transition!

fuzzpig · 22/04/2014 18:29

Bramshott I feel your pain! Hope you are feeling more sane today.

Sleep I am finding mindfulness really helpful. Never thought I'd be applying the principles to food, but it's been a brilliant way of learning to nourish myself rather than treating myself like a dustbin.

Hello lovely ladies!! Your thread has rescued me from the temptation to calorie count and to instead focus my efforts on eating healthily. I only want to shift about 5lbs or so, but I really want to improve my eating and general health. I've been making an effort already over the past week, but like others have found, it should be a lot easier from tomorrow with the Easter hols over with.

I've started having either pate on seeded toast, or scrambled egg and toast for breakfast, and am planning on a big tuna salad for lunch tomorrow. Just by paying attention over the past few days I can already notice how protein and fat in the first part of the day set me up to eat well and not snack on sugary things later in the afternoon.

Thanks for all your contributions and ideas x

AmericasTorturedBrow · 23/04/2014 14:39

ugh Easter destroyed me and now I'm off for four days with DH CHILDFREE thanks to my lovely parents...we're road tripping to the Grand Canyon, can't wait! To be honest we should eat ok as there will be no DC food to pick at, no boredom at home, only drinking one night as the other two mornings we want to get up with sunrise

See you after the weekend!

Sleepwhenidie · 23/04/2014 16:35

Oh lucky you Americas, have a wonderful time Envy!

stilllearnin · 23/04/2014 22:42

Love love love getting up early and child free too! What a great time you'll have.

I made some lovely veggie burgers today- thumbs up from the kids too. Sweet potato, red kidney beans and mixed seeds were the main ingredient so more or less cupboard store stuff. I may never buy a shop burger again! We had it with broc and baby sweet corn steamed.

Bramshott · 24/04/2014 08:46

Have a great time Americas - sounds amazing!

Hello BreakingBod - good to see you.

DH away so I found myself glued to "Secret Eaters" last night - amazing (and terrifying)!

I have just tried a 100% wholemeal loaf in my bread machine - looks fairly good. If it works, I will add seeds to the next one. I am coming more and more to the conclusion that sugar is a far bigger stomach discomfort trigger for me than wheat...

Sleepwhenidie · 24/04/2014 09:23

Hi breakingbod (great name) - stick around!

Bram that's interesting you're noticing that about the wheat. It's so great that so many of us are tuning in to what our bodies are telling us about how different food affects us individually Smile. How are your stress levels at the moment?

Trenzalor · 24/04/2014 10:16

Help! I need a pep talk! I've discovered my biggest over eating trigger is poverty as I hate not being able to buy the food I want and having to live off what is in the freezer etc. and guess what - we are utterly broke at least until the end of the month if not longer. Help! Remind me I've been doing so well and slap me into sense!!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/04/2014 12:49

Arf @ the name Breakingbod - we are actually watching that series atm Grin welcome :)

Tenz - arghhh, Im having a minor blip too. YOU ARE DOING SO WELL! KEEP GOING Thanks

I cannot make healthy sugar free muffins if I do I see them as an excuse to wolf the lot Hmm ffs!

On the plus side at least they were sugar free and made with coconut oil - I used to be able to polish off 'real' muffins like that so it's an improvement I suppose.

I ended up in McDonalds last night with a friend who wanted to go. I got a chicken burger and fries - the fries tasted so salty they were revolting and once I had the burger in my hands it felt so 'wrong' I took it out of the bun and just ate the chicken. Not that bothered tbh as I only go there once a year or so, it was always a rare occasion. Interestingly it wasn't guilty feelings I experienced it just felt like an odd combination - chicken in a bun now Confused

Tonight we have salmon and veg which Im looking forward to.

Trenz - what would you like to eat that you can't? Is it fresh foods? I haven't noticed a hike in my food bill BUT that is because we have an Aldi 5 minutes from our house, Im sure I would otherwise.

Trenzalor · 24/04/2014 13:13

Food generally! I'm so limited on anything that isn't a market vegetable in its purest form. Sigh. This too will pass...

Hello, could I join you? (Hello breakingbod good username Grin )
I want to clean up my eating and also move more. I have a dog who I walk twice a day with my 2stone dd on my back but other than that I don't do any exercise. I can't really afford the time or money for the gym but I'm going to start 30 day shred (eeek) and try to make our walks longer.
I need to really control my portion sizes, and stop mindlessly snacking.
I need to up my fruit and veg intake. I find it easy to do this when I've pre-prepared things like celery, carrot, cucumber sticks, or chopped melon and left them in the fridge so I need to do this more so there's always some on hand.
I probably need to cut down on the booze. I don't drink much and rarely get drunk but I will have a couple of bottles of beer a couple of times a week which isn't great for my middle :-/
I want to lose 1 stone, doesn't sound like much but it feels impossible sometimes!

Rummikub · 24/04/2014 20:37

Hi just checking in.

Hi new people.

Natasha, what's clean eating?

BreakingBod · 24/04/2014 20:44

Thanks - we're currently on Series 2 Dame so we're several years behind the rest of the Western world.

I did quite well today to begin with - was at work, which is always much trickier than when I'm off, but I made myself have breakfast even though it was horribly early and I really didn't feel like it. My pate on seeded toast kept me going all the way to lunch (about 6 hours! Usually I have a sweet snack about 10.30am and am starving for it!). Then I'd taken in a big tuna salad, and also had 2 chunks of cheddar with it. Then it went very downhill when I got home where I've had a glass of Pepsi Max and a whole Milybar cow..! Oh well, still better than normal up until that point.

AgentS I've just given up wine, largely because it gives me terrible stomach ache which keeps me awake half the night, but also to be healthier too.

Can I share a minor miracle?! I was out to lunch today with an old colleague, and ordered soup, which came with half a white baguette roll. First I said I didn't want the roll, then I thought "oh well, it comes with it, and I might be hungry" so I had it. But it looked so white and insipid that I really didn't fancy eating it so I put it in my bag and brought it home for the DDs. And actually I wasn't hungry in any case!
