Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

He's on his way home right now Smile . He has a finger which gets infected sometimes when he's a bit run down (It's from an old injury). He had a scary red line tracking all the way up to his armpit and has had intravenous antibiotics for a few days now. I shall be making him eat good food with me to get him healthy!

Notmaisieinmorningside · 02/07/2014 16:04

Oh, I just had an afternoon snack (as recommended previously on this thread) of celery and almond butter. So delicious, and this despite the fact that I'm not usually a fan of celery. And surprisingly filling too. Thanks to whoever suggested it - you may just have created an addiction, but at least it's a relatively healthy and sustaining one...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/07/2014 16:16

Do you make almond butter or buy it, and where from? Sounds delicious!

Hello Dame, I bought it (although apparently it's easy to make in a food processor). I thought they'd be bound to have it in Waitrose, but they didn't - but there was a big selection in our local health food shop - they also had cashew nut butter and hazelnut butter....

LuckySaint · 03/07/2014 12:20

Thanks NannyPlum, i do use orzo sometimes.

Blue berries, raspberries, banana, grapes, strawberries topped with linseed?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/07/2014 14:45

I'll look for nut butter in health food shop, thanksSmile

Hi everyone, sorry I've been quiet for a few days, its a bit crazy here with 3 DC's end of terms (3 different schools) what with plays, sports days, trips and parties - I can't wait until they are all done!

Welcome Lucky - I am intrigued, are you going to make me guess where we have crossed paths before or pm me? Grin

Hi Shortaris, New Rules is a great book, how are you getting on with it? Are you new to weight training?

Prosecccoco - even 10 days makes a difference Smile. I love halloumi too. On your yoghurt, how about some fresh berries, raw nuts, powdered flaxseed or goji berries?

Holmes - how is DH doing? Better I hope. Good news about your house move Smile.

DH and I went to see Chef last night, great film, very feel good, we smiled all the way through and the food in it looks amazing - don't watch it hungry! Also it has a theme of if your follow your heart and trust your instincts then things turn out just how they should, which I love.

kazzawazzawoo · 03/07/2014 19:37

I'm struggling to ditch the junk Sad However, on a good day I usually eat muesli or porridge with almond milk for breakfast, an Eat Natural cereal bar mid morning, tuna mayo with hard boiled egg, cucumber, pepper and cherry tomatoes and mayo for lunch, some mixed nuts and raisins mid afternoon and meat and veg (no carbs) for dinner. I drink only black decaf coffee or water.

How does this sound?

(On a bad day I also have a small bag of popcorn, ryvita with butter and cheese and chocolate Sad Sad Sad )

Sleep I love it! Taken me AGES to get through the first stage as I work odd patterns and have a busy social life, but should be there soon. Totally new to weights and I love them. Only thing is I am STARVING when I've done a workout but I do have my protein shakes and often go in the morning then have an omelette with a bit of cheese and maybe smoked salmon to look forward to. Chef sounds great.

Prosecco, was going to say berries too. I can't handle granola/muesli type stuff. It makes me think of stuff you'd find in a rabbits hutch and I always think putting milk in it will make it go like wallpaper paste! Never tried any of this stuff for that reason. Not a fussy eater, honest just have a thing about these. And I can't handle the smell of porridge. (slinks off after these confessions)

I'd get straight on the weight training if I were you Proseccoco. There's an amazing few months - a sort of honeymoon period when you first start when you can burn fat and build muscle at the same time, after that it becomes near impossible and you have to get more scientific in terms of training/diet, cutting or bulking. And if you are trying to lose weight, by maximising protein and weight training while you do it you can also maximise the proportion of fat you lose-rely on diet alone, you will lose more muscle. Happy to pm or chat on a separate thread if you are interested in more info Smile. Re eggs, very difficult to have too many (within reason). I probably eat a dozen a week Smile

Short you do need to pack in the protein! Sounds like you are doing great . Remember peas and chickpeas are also your friend if you get sick of tuna, eggs and meat Smile.

Foodie question for you all (for fun)- what food would you most struggle to give up completely? I think eggs would be a real struggle for me!

Welcome Kazza, food sounds great, how are you feeling about it, is it an effort to be 'good'? We try to get away from the good/bad labels here Smile

I'm an emotional eater, so when everything's fine I eat sensibly. If I'm the slightest bit stressed I start eating. I struggle to find things I like for breakfast that aren't stuffed with carbs Sad At the moment I have porridge or muesli, but don't enjoy them. What I really want is croissant or buttered toast. I've given up most wheat though, as it makes my ibs worse. It just seems a pity to eat something I don't really like. I don't have much time in the morning due to school/work preparations. And I'm not keen on egg unless covered in mayonnaise.

kazzawazzawoo · 04/07/2014 15:02

I'd struggle to give up cheese. I love cheese Smile

fuzzpig · 04/07/2014 18:19

Oh I'm not sure I could answer that question Blush I enjoy so many things!

Chocolate would definitely be near the top. But naice stuff - I now go for less of the expensive favourites rather than more of the cheap crappy unsatisfying stuff.

But actually so would eggs! I'd never have expected that until a few months ago, but now I find myself really craving them! I haven't managed eggs for breakfast so often in the last few weeks but I do them for dinner sometimes for DH and me instead.

A lot of fruit, especially exotic, would be on the list too. I enjoy so many different types. DD (just turned 7) is just as much of a fruitbat as me - she dances with excitement if I manage to get my hands on some lychees or physalis. :o

donteattheplaydough · 04/07/2014 19:16

I'm with you kazzawazzawoo - cheese would be very hard to give up.

By the way what is the thing everyone seems to have against muesli and granola on here? Is there something about them I should know (apart from the similarity to rabbit hutch floors, which doesn't bother me!)

Cantdothisagain · 04/07/2014 19:20

I love muesli and granola if homemade from scratch - hate the premade stuff and sawdust.

I would struggle without dark chocolate, coconut in any form, avocados, chicken and salmon.

That list may be cheating as it's so many!

Fuzz, I hope you are feeling better.

Feeling yuck as politely ate piece of shop bought cheap cake as a friend bought it and felt I had to - it was so tasteless. Bleugh. Polite empty calories annoy me.

Oh and I don't eat enough eggs. Not a huge fan though DH loves them. I need to try. Love tortilla/frittata though.

Cantdothisagain · 04/07/2014 20:00

But homemade muesli is just oats with whatever you choose to add - it's not hugely sugary unless you make it so...
