Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Octopus37 · 07/02/2014 14:26

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

That sounds delicious!

goodasitgets · 16/03/2014 21:09

Made it once as a "use up fridge" meal and it was so nice I keep making it
Anyone who's short on time, the veg fusions steam veg are really nice. Oh and blue diamond brand almonds especially the smokehouse ones

solitudehappiness · 16/03/2014 21:28

Feeling very inspired today. Had an absolutely lovely weekend with great company. And, I've eaten really healthily too. Tuna salad, home made chicken, potato and tomato stew. Good, wholesome, filling and healthy food. I did have chocolate fudge cake at a friends today though Blush But I was running around playing football and playing with my friends dog, so must have burned all the calories off lol

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 11:58

I have butter beans on the hob...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 12:46

I used 2 cans of BB,2 carrots and one big onion,1 chicken stock gel pot, dried parsley and out greatly improve with a glug of olive oil and sea salt at the end stirred through the pot. Didn't have feta but grated cheddar tastes great sprinkled on the top. MUCH better to use canned beans as they fall apart if you use the dried sort you need to soak and it's too mushy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 12:55

Oh and I used pasata as I didn't have ruined tomatoes, worked fine.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 12:55

TINNED not ruinedGrin

fuzzpig · 17/03/2014 13:30

That sounds great, will have to try it sometime! Also, how do you do the lemon chicken please?

I am so blaarggh today, period arrived early (well not that early - and come to think of it I didn't have any PMS like cramps before hand so I wasn't 'warned' several days in advance!) willpower may be out the window for the next day or two :o

Sleepwhenidie · 17/03/2014 13:44

Sounds delicious Dame

Fuzz - do you think there could be a link between eating better and no pmt symptoms? I've seen it a lot, especially when people cut out sugar Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 13:58

Lemon chicken was just onion, diced chicken and saute then add juice of two lemons and half teaspoon of sugar. Thicken with cornflour. I think next fine I'll cook the breasts in foil in the oven and do the onion and lemon separately.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 13:59

I'm a lot less ratty and irritable since I stopped eating so much sugar!

fuzzpig · 17/03/2014 14:48

Yes definitely sleep, I'm sure it's not a coincidence. :)

I'm getting there, slowly. I am much less 'all or nothing' than I used to be, so it's easier to forgive myself - as opposed to giving up - if I have a bad day.

I know it's going to take a while to get fully into a routine with cooking/housework so I'm happy to take it in baby steps - just like with the EatBettering :)

Sleepwhenidie · 17/03/2014 14:53

Good for you Fuzz, you're doing brilliantly. The hardest bit is remembering to be kind to ourselves!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/03/2014 15:02

Well done fuzzThanks

Octopus37 · 17/03/2014 22:16

Well done Fuzz. Dame your chicken recipe sounds lovely. I am aiming for a better week this week, done a fast day tomorrow, so aim tomorrow to eat relatively healthily.

2 eggs, Greek yog and a banana

Tuna roll , tinned peaches

Pasta, meat balls, grapes

Huge, big piece of panettone

I feel like I've binged but it doesn't look too bad written down.

Meh, I'll do better tomorrow!Grin

How's everyone else?Smile

Bramshott · 19/03/2014 10:01

I have PMT too and ate quite a collection of rubbish yesterday Blush.

Still, today is a new day - muesli and half a slice of wholemeal toast with lemon curd so far.

DH made falafels last night so I think some of those left over for lunch (although I also made rye bread with my new breadmaker yesterday which is very yummy) - maybe a falafel sandwich?! That would just be carb overload wouldn't it! Still, better rye-bread than biscuits in my PMT-fuelled munch-fest!

We're off to a concert DD1 is singing in tonight so have already got thai chicken curry out of the freezer for a quick dinner when we come in.

What's everyone else eating today?

Sleepwhenidie · 19/03/2014 10:19

Me too - weird synchronisation! I don't get pmt symptoms as such, just get hit with the worst tiredness for a day or so. I managed to get through a yoga class yesterday after egg on toast, was out and had a fantastic lamb and rhubarb (!) stew thing from Leon and then later had a latte and crispy creme doughnut - sooo sweet but it was just what I wanted at the time! Some red wine and Indian nibbles last night but I think the dahl really didn't agree with me and I was awake with a bad tummy most of the night so feel shattered today. Joined some mums after drop off in Pret for a latte and an egg and bacon mini baguette. And that is it for my monthly crap binge Grin. Am going to skip the gym and catch up on some studying. DH is away for the night - I have some roast chicken and an m&s superfood salad in the fridge for lunch and will maybe just have smoked salmon and avocado for dinner.

Sleepwhenidie · 19/03/2014 10:20

Rye bread sounds good Bram Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/03/2014 10:53

I love those M and S superfood salads!

I had some brown soda bread at the weekend, it was delicious, I might get that again when I go shopping.

Weird how we seem to be synchronised, common with people who live together, this is cyber synchronisation Grin

Risette · 19/03/2014 11:36

Can I join you.

I've severely lacked motivation in the last few weeks and when I was munching on chocolate just after breakfast I felt I really should make the effort.

Have been planning to eat better for ages....I even cut out of the newspaper a seven day low sugar anti aging diet, but haven't started doing anything about it.

My problem is that I eat far too much sugar.

Sleepwhenidie · 19/03/2014 12:32

Hi Risette Smile

What's your typical day of food like? Do you think a cold turkey or step by step approach re sugar would be best?

goodasitgets · 19/03/2014 13:02

Today's food (I vaguely low carb)
B - scrambled eggs, bacon, goats cheese
L - banana/almond milk/flaxseed/PB/protein blended
T - meatballs, tomato and veg sauce, spinach

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/03/2014 13:09

Just had a really nice salad - spinach, lettuce, carrot and apple, raisins and roasted beans plus some smoked salmon, really enjoyed it!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/03/2014 13:10

Hi Risette :)
