I chucked out the microwave

Last week. I dont miss it yet. But will I?

We mainly used it for reheating. But a saucepan does the same job.

Does anyone really use theirs a lot? If so, what for?

I haven't had a microwave for 16 years. I only ever wish I had one when I forget to take the mince out of the freezer!

HDee · 09/02/2013 12:09

The only thing we use ours for is rice. We could easily cope without it and if it blew up I very much doubt we would replace it.

It was a godsend when our children were babies though, for heating bottles and food.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 09/02/2013 12:21

Hmm. Maybe when DD2 starts weaning I will miss it!

Morning porridge, hot chocolate with milk, using the microwave steriliser, defrosting in a hurry and reheating (straight into the bowl)

Arisbottle · 09/02/2013 12:26

We got rid of ours around October November . Do not miss it at all, other than for rice.

Pancakeflipper · 09/02/2013 12:26

I only use it to defrost mince. Once ours breaks then I shall just get myself more organised.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 09/02/2013 12:28

Oh.

Can oats so simple be cooked on the hob?

BlueberryHill · 09/02/2013 12:29

Starting off baked pots, just gets them going and then into the oven for 30 / 45 mins to crisp off. Cuts down the time and use of the oven.

Plus defrosting / reheating sometimes.

Other than that I hate them, knew someone who used to do pizzas in them, why?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 09/02/2013 12:30

We used to do the chicago town pizzas in them. But then we tried in the oven one time even when we still had the microwave and they were nicer!

Yes.
Porridge, defrosting our homemade cobs and bread, defrosting potato water for the bread, heating frozen peas, beans, defrosting fish/mince and warming DP's meals if he's home late. We even make scrambled egg in there, the kids prefer it that way. I wouldn't struggle if my microwave broke down but it'd be an inconvenience.

tinygreendragon · 09/02/2013 12:48

I thought I would miss mine when I moved house 6 months ago when I had to leave it behind, but I'm yet to find a reason to need it.

Saves space and saves money on the electric too!

pregnantpause · 09/02/2013 18:37

Porridge, bottle s, reheat dinners with less mess, rice, baked pot a, scrambled eggs, super noodles(not proud of that) quick softening of butter. I could not last a day without mineSmile

MikeLitoris · 09/02/2013 18:40

Got rid of ours before christmas too.

The only time I have missed it is when I really fancied ready brek. Normal porridge is fine on the hob but ready brek must be zapped.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 09/02/2013 18:41

I use mine daily. Heating milk for cereals, porridge. Do not have time to stand over saucepans of porridge in the morning oats so simple it is! Hot chocolates, reheating/defrosting home made soups and sauces straight from freezer. Even coffee I haven't finished drinking and it's gone coldBlush love mine :)

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 09/02/2013 18:43

we use ours 2-3 night a week, to reheat batch cooking on work nights.
when the DC are older and happy to eat at a later, more civilised hour, we'll probably ditch it.

iremembertypewriters · 09/02/2013 18:45

I would definitely miss ours. We do rice, pasta, porridge, warm milk, defrost batch meals. Loads! We've got a really rubbish job so the microwave saves loads of time.

dorapeppageorgenoddy · 09/02/2013 18:47

We haven't had one for years and we grew up without one - hot chocolate is nicer/easier with one though!

dorapeppageorgenoddy · 09/02/2013 18:49

And we really missed it at Christmas when it was our turn to do Christmas this year and we noticed the pudding was x mins in microwave (very quick) or 3hrs being steamed!

ouryve · 09/02/2013 18:56

I make my morning porridge in mine. I don't have to pay any attention to it while it's cooking. I just have the one dirty bowl instead of a dirty pan with milk burnt on it, a dirty hob, where the milk boiled over while I was trying to do 3 other things at once plus the same dirty bowl.

I also make hot chocolate (same business re washing up), reheat things, cook some veg... I wouldn't be without it.

MikeLitoris · 09/02/2013 18:56

I forgot about warming cold tea actually.

That I do miss.

bigbadbarry · 09/02/2013 18:57

I use it for heating milk and warming up the children's bedtime toys. DH uses it to warm his dinner when he is late home. That is all.

MirandaWest · 09/02/2013 18:58

I haven't had one for about 5 or 6 years. Don't miss it tbh

determinedma · 09/02/2013 19:09

Nope. Got rid of it years ago and haven't missed it at all. Wouldn't bother with another one

doctorhamster · 09/02/2013 19:10

Ours blew up a few weeks ago and we haven't replaced it. So far I only miss it for reheating a cold cuppa!

Wolfcub · 09/02/2013 19:15

We don't have one. The last time lived in a house with one was over ten years ago. It's not an item that's missed at all
