Have just bought bagels for the first time ever. Please give me some inspiration as to what I can top them with. I Havd cheese and jalapeño ones and raisin and cinnamon ones

Also do I always need to toast them ?

You don't need to tast them.

Cream cheese +/- banana
Butter +/- jam, marmalade etc.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 17/09/2012 20:16

I disagree, they are awful untoasted!
Cream cheese is the best topping. Otherwise just regular sandich fillimgs bacon in a bagel is luuuush!

wannabedomesticgoddess · 17/09/2012 20:19

Cream cheese, bacon and some kind of chutney. Yum.

Virgil · 17/09/2012 20:21

Surely everyone toasts bagels? Confused

Cream cheese and bacon. Delicious

WhatYouLookingAt · 17/09/2012 20:36

you only need to toast if not fresh. A lovely soft chewy fresh bagel needs no toasting, would be madness!

blueberryboybait · 17/09/2012 20:44

Roast beef, red onion and tomato. mmmmmmm

Toast, and top with cream cheese, smoked salmon and capers.

goingtoofast · 18/09/2012 08:37

Good quaility bagels don't need toasting, supermarket bagels do!

storminabuttercup · 18/09/2012 09:28

BLT is my favourite

Or my Christmas breakfast favourite is bacon, a mini omelette and loads of cheese!

iseenodust · 18/09/2012 09:32

The trick is to toast only the cut side, that way it is warm, chewy and yum. so you actually have to grill not toast.
Another vote for the classic cream cheese and smoked salmon, with twist of black pepper.

ScooseIsLoose · 18/09/2012 09:33

Definitely toasted on the cut side and definitely cream cheese and smoked salmon drools

AberdeenAnxious · 21/09/2012 22:54

I like avocado mushed with lemon juice on mine. Or Cream cheese and cherry tomatoes. And I always toast my bagels but my dd eats them untoasted.

Smoked Salmon!!!

mamij · 22/09/2012 17:51

Smoked salmon. Scrambled eggs.

Taffeta · 22/09/2012 17:53

I like mine with salted butter and marmite
Or pate and cucumber
Or smoked salmon squeeze of lemon dill and a little creme fraiche

KatoPotato · 22/09/2012 17:56

Peanut butter!

MummyPig24 · 22/09/2012 19:31

Definitely toasted. Plain bagels with cream cheese and cucumber or with nutella whwn I need a chocolate carb fix!

howiwonder · 22/09/2012 20:15

im currently addicted to bagel with cream cheese, avocado, tomato and loads of black pepper, yum!

MamaMary · 22/09/2012 20:18

Need to toast them.

Scrambled eggs
Mature cheddar with chutney (nice when grilled)
Smoked salmon and cream cheese with lemon juice squeezed on

My preference is for plain white bagels :)

Foshizzle · 22/09/2012 20:18

Salt beef, mustard, pickles.

picturesinthefirelight · 22/09/2012 20:20

Ds would say toasted with cream cheese.

I don't like cream cheese but love them with bacon & scrambled egg.

2tired2bewitty · 22/09/2012 20:20

Cream cheese on the cinnamon ones is good

Gimblinginthewabe · 22/09/2012 20:24

OMG! Why did it take until half way down the thread to mention smoked salmon?!!

Cut them in half and toast them.
Spread cream cheese on each half.
Layer good quality smoked salmon (don't even bother with rubbish stuff - ASDA special brand is the cheapest nice salmon)
Lemon and freshly ground black pepper to top.

That is how bagels HAVE to be eaten.

(Or toast them and tear them up to dip in hummous as a snack)

frankie4 · 22/09/2012 20:24

If they are the bagged bagels then they definitely need toasting, they are like uncooked dough otherwise. Freshly baked bagels are crustier and don't need toasting.

Can't beat smoked salmon and cream cheese!
