Calling classy MNers. What do you like to nibble with your Champagne?

I'm getting very excited now.

My brother's getting married next Friday and we're doing Champagne and nibbles at my house beforehand.

What shall we eat?

My dad (Champagne supplier and proper grown up) says salami and anchovy-stuffed olives.

Anything else? There will be quite a few vegetarians there.

canapes!

madmarchhare · 11/03/2006 16:08

Sainsburys do some very nice little russian pancake things you could put soft cheese and chives on.

spidermama · 11/03/2006 16:08

expat I did say classy MNers. Wink

How would I get hold of canapes then? Make or buy?

I've very much a lentil stew type so am way out of my depth.

Order it? Do they deliver then?

I'd quite like to make something.
Are cheese straws a bit naff?

I love the pancakes, cream cheese and chives idea madmarchare.

alliebaba · 11/03/2006 16:14

i don't think they deliver but i'm sure they do it per head like a buffet.. think waitrose do too..

helsi · 11/03/2006 16:15

according to dh who is a head chef - the most simple canapes can be things like:

buy ready made pastry cups (available in various shapes) and fill with things like

smoked salmon, soft cheese and dill
soft cheese, black olive, sun blush tomato
mozzerella and pesto
prawns in marie rose sauce and topped with fresh dill
pickled herrings with onion and herbs

also try putting some inch square brown and white bread peices and topping with cream cheese and prawns
smoked salmon
sun dried tomatoes
gherkin and mayo
roasted peppers

Dh says that the main base is usually cream/soft cheese and them other things like fish, and veg etc are added with those.

you can also get sweet canapes ready made containining things like mini choux buns, vanilla slices etc.

sansouci · 11/03/2006 16:16

flutes au beurre are excellent. sort of a twisted pastry stick, gorgeously crunchy & buttery. Not cheese twists though. Too much flavour might spoil the taste of the bubbly.

helsi · 11/03/2006 16:18

where abouts are you spidermama?

serenity · 11/03/2006 16:19

russian pancake things are blinis iirc (and the Sainsbury's ones are very nice)

Strawberry and champagne are nice.

Congrats to your brother btw Smile

spidermama · 11/03/2006 16:20

Helsi - very classy suggestions. Thankyou. I will definitely do these canapes. Are these canape cup things readily available? Where?

I'm not sure my pastry is up to scratch sans.

Dh uses a company called Nisbets/Nisbitts (sorry not sure of spelling as can't find his catalogue and he has just nipped out). You can order online too which is great.

spidermama · 11/03/2006 16:26
