Wedding cup cakes

Hi, wondered if anyone could help my daughter is getting married next year and wants a cupcake wedding cake. We are on a tight budget so thought I would have a go at doing it myself. I know I can make a cup cake it's the decorating I will find tricky. Any tips anyone?

Do you mean lots of little ones? I did 100 for a wedding a few years ago which looked great (sound of trumpet blowing). There was one 'main' cake too which was about the size of a normal cake.

Or do you mean one big massive cupcake?

MikeLitorisRings · 07/08/2012 19:33

Get your self on youtube and watch some videos.

My tip would be to get a decent size nozzle. Try lakelands ones or a wilton 2d.

If not, do you have a college that runs a basic class? How about asking the students if they would like to do them cheap?

Redglow · 07/08/2012 19:52

I mean a big one at the top, then lots of little ones. Jelly what did you put on the top?

Look out for groupin/living social/wowcher deals they often have cake/cupcake decorating course for about £15

Redglow · 07/08/2012 19:57

Oh thanks will do.

Like Mike said, buy the right nozzle, have a practise with some buttercream and pipe some roses ( youtube that) when your confident pipe them onto your cupcake and fill in the gaps with small swirls, pearls, blossoms, and some small butterflies, job done.

MikeLitorisRings · 07/08/2012 20:55

If you mean a giant cupcake on top then I would suggest you have a good practise at baking it.

I have made loads and still find them a bit hit and miss.

My favourite wedding cupcakes are roses. There is a pic on my profile of some I made. So easy to do once you get the hang of it.

jellyrolly · 07/08/2012 21:19

Mine weren't cupcakes but like mini wedding cakes. Lots of lemon sponge sandwich cut outs with ready rolled fondant icing. I put fabric ribbon round the bottom and sugar violets on the top. Sounds like your daughter is after something different style-wise though. I agree that it's all in the nozzle! I have to say, when there are lots together that are basically the same, they look fantastic regardless of how complicated.

LOVE your cake pics MikeLitorisRings!

Redglow · 07/08/2012 21:24

Wow mike you are really talented that one in your hand did you actually pipe that? I love all your cakes. I meant I want a square cake at the top and then cupcakes underneath. I am going to pay someone to do the top for me and then make the cupcakes.

If you decorate the square cake with the same decorations as the cupcakes with some lovely contrasting colours it will look fab, please keep it simple, check out my profile cakes, see theres anything that catches your eye on there.

Mike, hows the bows coming on?

MikeLitorisRings · 07/08/2012 21:45

Nan bows and most of the flowers all done. So you want a sneak peek of of the flowers for a 21st parcel cake I'm doing?

red those are really easy to do. They take a bit of practice but once you've got the knack, so easy!

nannycook · 07/08/2012 21:50

Red, have a go you'll be surprised how easy it is, dont be too hard on yourself though.
Mike, yes please!

nannycook · 07/08/2012 21:51

Mike, loving your colours, bet your pleased? i would be!

Redglow · 07/08/2012 21:53

Oh thanks so much for your advice my daughter wants a pale blue butterfly theme. Nannycook I loved the hearts on your cupcakes do you make them out of marzipan.? Your birthday cakes look great too.

OP posts:
MikeLitorisRings · 07/08/2012 21:56

I'm desperate for someone to ask for a blue themed cake.

Everyone wants pink and purple ATM.

I'm thinking of trying a tiffany themed cake or cupcakes soon.

That said I am sick of the sight of cake right now Grin

Redglow · 07/08/2012 21:59

Mike where are you based ? Do you do cakes as a business?

nannycook · 07/08/2012 22:02

Red, do you mean the tiny hearts on my daughters graduation cupcake? no, i made those out of sugarpaste, coloured it red first, check out Amazon for your cutters if your going down that route, i get most of mine from as theres no delivery charge on most things. Thank you, did those in the last week all in that hot week we had, not good for cake decorating. As far as your butterflies go, you could do lovely colours with graduating your blue theme, maybe with some white in there too.

We had a large fruit cake on the top and cupcakes as our wedding cake. Best idea I ever had! They went down a treat in fact, we were at another wedding this weekend and a friend mentioned how she will never forget how amazing our cupcakes were. We got married 2.5 years ago! Although, I hasten to add we did have a bakery make them for us. I'm not too bad at making and decorating cupcakes myself but I just didn't have the time or patience to do almost 200 for our wedding!
As long as you can make a decent sponge you are halfway there. Keep the decoration simple and just keep practicing with the icing!
Good luck! Smile

Redglow · 07/08/2012 22:06

Yes I was the hearts looked lovely. Thanks will check out amazon.

OP posts:
MikeLitorisRings · 07/08/2012 22:06

No! I just do them for friends and family.

I'm in S.Wales.

nannycook · 07/08/2012 22:09

Red, i got those tiny hearts from amazon, they are small but perfect for cupcake decorating.

Redglow · 07/08/2012 22:11

A fruit cake on top is a good idea. Yes my sponges are quite good and my daughter is quite creative, so fingers crossed we can do them as we will save so much money.

Mike you should start a business.
