Am in the middle of doing the shopping list and each week I buy robinsons no added sugar cordial. I hate giving it to the kids though as of all of the sweetners etc...thats in it. So before I add it to the list again could you please let me know what you give your children to drink??

Always buy rocks organic squash. Aso give water, fruit juice and milk.

DD is nearly 4 and I no longer dilute fruit juice at all. Haven't done for a while. But she normally only has one glass a day at breakfast time anyway. She chooses water generally at home.

Apple juice diluted, water and milk. Lo-sugar squash very diluted once a day maximum, often less than this - think I might go for Hi Juice next after reading comments about sweetners in squash. Ds (6)very occasionally has fizz at a birthday or a rare trip to a family friendly pub!

mmmmmmm pop, no one calls it pop anymore.
We used to get it from the 'pop man' when we were kids!!
DD has: squash, quite weak though, fruit juice, smoothies, milkshake, and if we go out for dinner she has COCA COLA!!!!!!!
Have you seen how many e numbers/additives etc are in a tin of baked beans, a loaf of white bread etc etc. Even water isnt water these days!! so i try not to get too hung up on it tbh, as long as its evened out at the end of the diet taking her whole diet into consideration.
How old are your LO's? DD is 5

They do have milkshakes as very occasional treats - it's rare that I want to wash the blender.

they can choose one other drink (of pure fruit juice diluted) per day.... (5 year old doesnt like juice and ONLY ever has water / milk

if its not a meal time its water ONLY.... at meal times they can choose milk or water or juice if they hadnt had it at breakfast time.

Before bed milk is allowed as well

milk, water and dilute juice - normally cloudy apple. Recently DS has also developed a liking for fruit teas.

Ds has Water, chocolate soy milk as a treat (and because he can't have normal milk).

If you give juice why not put an inch of apple juice in the bottom of a cup and fill with iced water?

Aspartame is banned for US fighter pilots because of it's effect on concentration, Preservatives cause an allergic reaction in my son, sorbitol can have a laxative effect, Colourings can send little angels screaming around the room. Check the ingredients list of your Robinsons against the dirty dozen.

By comparison, sugar really isn't so bad. A calm child will probably let you clean their teeth!

Robinsons Hijuice, served well watered. For breakbox/out and about they have fruit juice carton or milkshake carton.

Water, milk, fresh juice, long life juice, Ribena, squash, flavoured milks, etc.

I actually prefer to buy squashes etc which aren't the "no added sugar" ones as I prefer my children to consume sugar as opposed to sweeteners. At least we know what sugar does, but we don't know what sweeteners do.

LM you just reminded me that I read not so long ago that there is no nutritional benefit to drinking fresh juice over longlife, apparently

Water mostly. No milk - I am anti cows milk for humans. Ds1 (4.5) used to have rice milk, but don't buy that anymore either. Occasionally, he has apple juice, but not that often. He likes innocent smoothies and has those a few times a wweek. Ds2 has just water and breastmilk (he is 20 months).

bobbybob - my dd doesnt like water or milk (never has) so what alternatives could i give her taking into consideration the info you gave on additives?
Are the 'normal cordials' (ie not the non added sugar ones) safer?

Oh and straight Gin when they are cranky and won't sleep.

You want to get something where the label is as close to this as possible

Ingredients: fruit, sugar, vit. C (which does have an E number 300 I think)

Colourings just make it look pretty, if there is enough fruit juice in it it shouldn't need flavour, the sugar and the bottling process should act as the preservative.

I always go for the fewest ingredients, for instance in jams I buy the ones that say "fruit 50%, sugar 50%).
