Has marmite changed?

I'm the only person in our house that likes marmite, so a pot lasts a long time. I can't remember when I bought the jar I just finIshed, but the marmite in my new jar is just not the same. It's more runny, and not nearly as marmitey. I had to put quite a lot on my toast, where I would usually just put a scraping.
Has anyone else noticed this change?

haven't noticed myself

though the squeeze stuff is just wrong, I think that's thinner, maybe the squeezy stuff got accidently put in a jar and you bought it

MaureenMLove · 09/05/2012 22:13

We eat lashings and lashings of the stuff in this house. In fact I am eating it on toast right now!

I haven't notice a difference. It's always runnier when you open a new jar, because the air hasn't got to it, imo.

It still tastes damn good though! Grin

RightUpMyRue · 09/05/2012 22:16

Your old crusty jar had matured is all Grin

Iwantcandy · 09/05/2012 22:19

Your marmite was just old

godzuki · 09/05/2012 22:25

I think Marmite has changed. It used to be blacker and stickier. Now it is browner and runnier.

LtEveDallas · 09/05/2012 22:27

I think it's changed too, but the taste as well. I think it's kind of hotter, stronger?

I buy Vegemite now, I prefer it (and it's cheaper)

Fuchzia · 09/05/2012 22:29

I thought this too! Very much runnier and the flavour not as strong!

mogs0 · 09/05/2012 22:48

I've just reached the bottom of the jar so will be interested to see if I notice a difference when I buy a new jar.

I'm not sure if could switch to vegemite...aren't they quite different?

Selks · 09/05/2012 22:50

Mmm marmite.

That is all.

Iwantcandy · 09/05/2012 22:57

Well they make an extra strength one too now -maybe try thatSmile

Fenouille · 09/05/2012 22:58

Yes, I've noticed the same. I need to spread it like jam these days whereas I'm sure I used to need only the barest of scrapings.

The squeezy one is definitely runnier, we've switched to that because DS can do his own sandwiches without leaving the jar full of crumbs and butter. Maybe they use the same formulation in the jars now.

I think Vegemite is dreadful though so we're sticking with Marmite.

PhyllisDoris · 09/05/2012 23:20

Glad it's not just me then! Haven't tried the squeeze stuff or the extra strong. They don't sell either in the local ( small) Sainsbury's where I do my shopping.

Vegemite is a lot nicer IMO.

Just sayin. Smile

Iwantcandy · 10/05/2012 08:07

Just had toast and marmite for breakfast. You might be right about the strength. Am sure I never used to have quite as much on my toast. It's still delicious though. Shall we write in and ask if the recipe has changed?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/05/2012 09:06

I think they've caved to pressure and reduced the salt content....

Flisspaps · 10/05/2012 09:07

No, it's still bloody vile

ShatnersBassoon · 10/05/2012 09:10

Marmite from the squeezy container is definitely less viscous and easier to spread than that from a jar, but it tastes the same to me.

Meglet · 10/05/2012 09:17

I hadn't noticed any difference. The squeezy stuff is horrible though.

Might get a jar of the extra strong Marmite and see how hardcore it is.

Metabilis3 · 10/05/2012 09:19

XO is stronger. But strongest of all is the own brand stuff they sell in Sainsburys and tesco. It's the food of the gods.

Queenofcake · 10/05/2012 09:19

I love marmite. Sadly I like it best on hot buttery toast and as I am currently on a diet have not had it for a while - because I want it with the butter!

I have not noticed a change but come to think of it I do tend to pile it onto my toast and sandwiches these days when a scrape used to do. I thought that was just me becoming greedier in my old age though.

Call me cynical but I wonder if they have made it "weaker" so they can sell the same size jars for the same price but we all use more of it, get through our jars quicker and buy more????Angry

I am going to have a marmite sarnie for munch today to try the taste and if I feel its changed I am going to write in and ask why????? I really dont get why companies change a good successful recipie (other than for the reason stated above).

I think we should all write in - well those that have noticed a change.

  • LUNCH not munch Grin
Queenofcake · 10/05/2012 09:22

This reminds me actually. Years ago I wrote into marmite and told them how much I loved their product and that I was now feeding it to my kids. They sent me free marmite and vouchers! Grin
