DD would like one but the ones in the supermarket are around £12.00.
Just wondered if there was a way of decorating a Victoria Sponge with some sort of Hello Kitty picture/icing???
Or any other ideas welcome.
(She will be 3)

There is a website that sells massive cake toppers ...... Let me go and see if I can find it again.

Munkiii · 05/11/2011 10:59

Hope your daughter has a lovely birthday.

When do you need to know? I was going to post exactly the same thread ! I eventually decided to make my own sponge and decorate it myself with icing and coloured icing tube things. I will do so Sunday night for Monday will it be too late to give you feed back on how good/bad it turned out?

I made a normal cake iced it, then bought a roll of rolled white royal icing cut out the help kitty head shape and bow then used Icing tubes and decorations to make the face . Then put it on the cake!

Really easy one to make here

sharond101 · 05/11/2011 13:28

This was fairly straightforward when I made it last year for a friend's daughter,

I made the Peppa Pig one from this website. There's a nice Hello Kitty one. The instructions are really good and easy to follow.

Where in the supermarket would I find Rolled white icing. And how long would it keep?

Near the icing sugar, and baking ingredients like sprinkles. Even my really rubbish supermarket has it.

HipHopOpotomus · 12/11/2011 00:08

I'm making one too. For the 19th nov. thought us make large rectangular cake, cut it into kitty head shape, cover in buttercream them the rolled white icing stuff. Then just have to add eyes now whiskers etc .

We could have a club!!! I used google images for ideas.

BlackCatinaWoollyhat · 12/11/2011 10:58

Hi all, made my practice cake today(on my profile).
Quite pleased with how it went.

Looks very good :) I had to make a pony cake yesterday for DD2, an actual pony not a flat cake. I had such rage.

startail · 13/11/2011 21:55

Dizzy (bob the builder) was the one that got me. I traced a suitable picture, pricked the outline onto orange icing and cut it out.
But it took at least 4 attempts and much adjusting to get it on the cake. All those stupid thin struts and support frame, it took ages to get her looking right.
A hello kitty head would be a dream.

startail · 13/11/2011 21:56

You are good practicing, 1am the night beforeBlush

HipHopOpotomus · 14/11/2011 09:46

Yes I will post onto my profile. I am taking Friday off work to bake cakes (decided to take a days leave in order to keep family/work life in balance, and not stress). I wanted to do it in buttercream but can't find the stuff here to add to buttercream to make it white - everywhere is out of stock and I'm suspicious of it's content. The Royal Icing tastes ghastly but at least it can be peeled off and there will be buttercream underneath.

Practice run looks great BlackCat - how about some coloured (pink?) icing underneath the Kitty?

What did you use for the whiskers? I'm having trouble sourcing licorice straps which was what I was planning on using! Can't find giant jelly beans for eyes/nose either. What to use?????

BlackCatinaWoollyhat · 14/11/2011 09:57

HipHop I used black writing icing for the whiskers. You need a steady hand though.
I was thinking maybe I could use something like licorice but I haven't found any at the shops yet, might have another look this week.
How would I make pink icing or can you get ready rolled pink icing?
I am a bit of a baking novice!

I used Jelly beans for the eyes, nose and bow.

You could ice the cake with a buttercream and add food colouring to it. it's very easy and tastes great. Google for recipes but here is a basic one.

You could also slice cake in middle, fill buttercream, and then cover cake in buttercream. You can get pink colouring (but you could use any colour), and you can also add flavoured essence (we like lemon or vanilla) to the icing. You can get a smooth surface with a hot flat knife. Then put the kitty on top - glorious!!! Pretty much everyone loves buttercream!

hazeyjane · 14/11/2011 10:03

I made one for dd1's 5th birthday, the picture is on my profile.

I made to big square cakes, cut out an oval, iced with butter icing, used jelly beans for the eyes and nose, blackened toothpicks for the whiskers and a sweet ribbon thing to make the bow.

HipHopOpotomus · 14/11/2011 10:05

trick it to beat it loads - use electric whisk if you have one. You would probably need to make double the recipe I linked to to get a good thick covering and a bit for the middle. Lurpack unsalted or organic butters are paler in colour so good for icing.

HipHopOpotomus · 14/11/2011 10:07

Hazy that is fab!!

I've put in request for day off - just waiting on reply :)

HipHopOpotomus · 18/11/2011 23:30

I'm done. My rather large Hello Kitty cake is complete & ready for tomorrow. I'm very happy with it. Picture on profile.:)
