That's it really. I need some lovely, infallible roast potatoes for Christmas dinner. I thought that someone said Iceland's were good but can't remember. Also - how big a bag would you need for 9 people? Ta!

you BUY them????????

seriously... make your own they're SO much nicer! aunt bessies just taste like massive chips...

SilentBite · 19/12/2005 21:02

Errr, don't you just peel, parboil, toss and roast? Surely anything fresh would taste better than from the freezer?

zippy539 · 19/12/2005 21:03

I do buy them! I'm not peeling a bloody great mound of tatties on Christmas morning! Come on - there must be some other slackers out there.

no short cuts for roasties I am afraid

Milgestoe · 19/12/2005 21:04

err, the greengrocers, the veg box man, or failing that, the supermarket. Peel, par boil, shake up, cook in fat for about 40 mins turning twice during that time.

misdee · 19/12/2005 21:04

i like using baking potatoes, parboil for 10 mins, drain, pop back in the pan, drizzle on a lttle oil, get a lid, and give the pan a good shake. then roast them.

Hulababy · 19/12/2005 21:04

I sometimes have the WW ones in - for after work short cuts. They are okay, but not a patch on the real thing I'm afraid.

followthestarlover · 19/12/2005 21:05

do them christmas eve and leave in water overnight (uncooked obviously)

Hulababy · 19/12/2005 21:06

Or if you really don't want to peel them - don't! You can roast them in wedgies with skins on, so I am sure you could do them as roasties with skins on.

Or if you par boil them the skins will just peel off anyway.

bauble99 · 19/12/2005 21:06

Waitrose are probably your best bet, in an emergency.

PennyLess · 19/12/2005 21:07

But you can do them in advance and freeze them!!!!!
Parboil for two minutes (from boiling) only, lay them out on something to freeze separately, then once frozen put them into bags. On the day, tip them into hot fat (pref goose fat) and cook for about an hour but probably more.

zippy539 · 19/12/2005 21:08

I totally appreciate that they are easy to make (and would undoubtedly taste better if I cooked them myself - or indeed grew them myself ) On this occasion I don't want to! Please - someone, anyone just tell me where I can buy some flippin' rough potatoes that I can pour out of a bag onto a tray.

You mean non-frozen ones?

Asda do some. Sure most of the supermarkets do.

zippy539 · 19/12/2005 21:11

See, that's what I mean! I don't want to be causing a conflagration with boiling goose fat - I just want a bag of spuds! I genuinely appreciate all the advice. I have cooked potatoes before but don't intend to do so while wrestling with a turkey, two over excited under threes and my inebriated father in law.

These are not just roast potatoes...these are lovingly parboiled the night before, roasted in goose fat, extra crispy crunchy roast potatoes

zippy539 · 19/12/2005 21:15

Aw M&S - thanks Chunker,why didn't I think of that!

SilentBite · 19/12/2005 21:15

honestly I would be gutted if someone gave me horrid frozen roasties for my xmas lunch. Enlist some help peeling if you must, but whatever, make them yourself!

WigWamBam · 19/12/2005 21:15

M&S do nice ready-made roasties, but you can get them from Sainsburys and Tesco as well.

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 21:16

This is not just hunkermunker, this is a festively-named able to think on her feet chunkerxmascake

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 21:16

Cross posts with Chunker. M&S ones aren't horrid frozen ones, they're from the chiller cabinet and they're rather nice!

I shall be using ready-made parsnips this year so why not roasties?

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 21:17

Aunt Bessie, Harpsi.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 21:17
