That's it really. I need some lovely, infallible roast potatoes for Christmas dinner. I thought that someone said Iceland's were good but can't remember. Also - how big a bag would you need for 9 people? Ta!

Actually Bauble, DS arrived after Apple, so we thought it appropriate to go the spices route and name him cinimmon. Unfortunately they havent met yet, but its only a matter of time...

NOW.... I would say that cauliflower cheese is in fact nicer if you get it from waitrose than if you do yourself. So why not switch the two, buy a couple of things of cauli cheese and put in a dish to look like you did yourself and it's MUCH less effort to do the spuds

santabops · 19/12/2005 21:48

Ummm

I'm not sure roast spuds are a hassle.

Whipping up cheese sauce and cooking cauli is easy!

santabops · 19/12/2005 21:49

I don't like shop bought cauli cheese - sorry!

puffoeufnog · 19/12/2005 21:49

rofl zippy re spudgate !!!

I bought M&S ready to cook roast potatoes last New Year. I was doing a 3 course lunch in my Dad's tiny 1 bedroom flat with a kitchen the size of a broom cupboard. Three under 3's, plus two 10 year olds were part of the jolly gathering in smallville. The other adults were given the job of entertaining them while I shut the kitchen door, flung open the window and when I should have been peeling spuds, sat on the draining board downing a couple of really good vodka martinis.

M&S did me proud that day and saved my f*ing sanity.

Someone might have already said but Bisto's roast potatoes are gorg.

However love making my own and sprinkling bisto gravy powder on them before they go in the oven.

Yummm

I buy Aunt Bessies, they are lovely. I don't have time to make Fresh Roast Potatoes on Christmas day.

jambothesnowman · 19/12/2005 22:56

aunt bessies for me too yummy.

asda do lovely garlic and rosemary ones too at xmas

Wordsmith · 19/12/2005 23:00

Oh come on, roast potatoes are so easy! Just like over chips - who would ant to buy them in packs when the real thing is such a doddle! I was shocked to hear my mother offering me a bag of frozen roasties the other day cos they were 2 for the price of 1. I mean - my mum!

I'm not normally this pedantic and purist.

ChunkerXmasCake · 19/12/2005 23:01

Aren't the frozen ones just squashy, salty balls of yuck though?

Mistletoo · 19/12/2005 23:06

frozen roasties on Christmas day?

MelissasSecretSanta · 19/12/2005 23:25

I was given shop brought roast potatoes once at a friends house. One had something inside it, didn't see it until I cut it up & nearly ate it. Was pg at the time & was heaving at the table (sorry TMI). Had a bag, unopened in my freezer for lazy days, got home & threw them away. YUK YUK YUK! NO thanks!

sparklymieow · 19/12/2005 23:26

I don't like shop brought roasties either, I love home cooked ones yum

puffoeufnog · 19/12/2005 23:28

don't know about frozen ones, but M&S ones already in a tray to bung in oven are more than passable if you don't want to do spuds for 10 people from scratch.

I think good roast spuds are easy enough to do for up to 6 people but catering for larger numbers does start to get a bit trickier.

Now what about Smash?

hativity · 19/12/2005 23:42

I have never eaten a frozen roast potato in my life. I find it a very strange concept. Roast potatoes = peeled potatoes, covered in oil and put in the oven. Don;t get the freezing bit at all.

Nightynight · 20/12/2005 00:07

agree, roast potatoes should be spontaneous.

Frostythesurfmum · 20/12/2005 00:22

PMSL "spudgate" and "When have you ever seen a parsnip go to the gym". I am very tempted by Puff's method as it involves vodka martinis.

christmaslovingbluealien · 20/12/2005 08:39

zippy, thats what kids are for.
plonk them at the kitchen table, hand them a potato peeler each, and let them at it. theyll be happy for at least an hour.

best if kids are at least six though.

zippimistletoes · 20/12/2005 08:47

my freezer is too small for things like roast potatoes to fit in

I am now worrying that my oven is too small for things like turkey to fit in as it is it's first christmas

I didn't realise there were so many variations on Christmas one way and the other

Hope your meal goes well Zippy

Bozza · 20/12/2005 09:28

Well this is why I don't do Christmas dinner at home - we do the travelling instead. I couldn't bring myself to serve frozen roast potatoes, although I know that's what my MIL will probably produce at my SIL's house.

Enideepmidwinter · 20/12/2005 09:32

what a complete waste of money

veuveclicquot · 20/12/2005 09:48

No No No! My way is best -

sit on sofa with glass of champagne at 9am
DP does the roast dinner from scratch to my specifications.

This also means generally he is too stressed to notice that I've had all the champagne and chocolate without sharing by 9.30.

DinosaurInAManger · 20/12/2005 10:00

Okay, practical people - what heat do you put your oven on at and how long do you put them in for? I have made them before (honest) but I can't remember how long they take! And do you have to do themn on the top shelf of the oven, and if so what do you do with the turkey?
