Is it normal to find developing chicken eggs inside the carcass?

I've just had chicken served to me by my mil and after eating i noticed inside the carcass these little eggs. Has anyone ever seen this before? Is it normal? How come they weren't cleaned out with the rest of the innards? It's made me feel quite queasy

Are you sure they were eggs? What did they look like?
I'd be a bit grossed out.

Yes, normal, but also normal to remove the oviducts when cleaning the chicken before cooking ime

They looked like mini eggs, different sizes, about 6 of them attached onto the carcass. It totally has grossed me out and I will be afraid to eat anything but bread for the next two days we are here.

CMOT, why wouldn't she have removed them before cooking then? They won't have done us any harm I presume, but that have made me feel very sick, particularly as I'm 7 months pregnant!

im pretty sure hens only develope one egg at a time and the shell is only formed just before its laid (i think 30 mins ish before) anyone with more experiance feel free to correct me on this! not sure what it was that you saw but it sounds gross!

Oooh, this is making me feel worse. Please tell me it won't have done me any harm! I'm squeamish enough as it is but being pregnant is making it worse!

well if it was properly cooked, it should be fine as any bacteria would have been killed.

Its a Jewish delicacy, seen as a bonus in chicken soup and wouldn't of harmed you at all.

I have never heard of oviducts! A basic cooking skill nickelbabe? I wonder how many I have not detected then??

And I used to nanny for Jewish families and MAKE the chicken soup......I don't recall eggs in the carcass but have vague memories of odd bits, had to remove big vein from the neck, put the stomach bit in the soup? Scrape scales off the feet to put in the pot? I wasn't squeamish back then, I am now I think!!

I've cooked a lot of chickens in my life and have never even heard of an oviduct

link for above text I'm reading a book called "What I don't know about Animals" the woman who wrote it described having the traditional soup with eggs attached still inside the chicken and how it was great luck and a delicacy to find them. Thats the only reason I know about it to be honest.

it's basically just part of the chicken's innards.

This is all very interesting, but as I am neither Jewish nor superstitious I will pass on the 'delicacy' of unhatched chickens eggs and inspect all chickens with minute care before cooking. I will also suggest to the mil that next time she cooks a chicken, she checks its insides first!
