Cake Advice - Need something special

Hi all,

It is soon my turn to bake for our Cake Club and I am a bit stumped for what to make as it needs to be something I haven't made before.

I bake a lot so am happy to do something a bit more difficult. Do any of you have a fab recipe you can share with me? It's for a group of girls so chocolate always goes down well but isn't essential.

Thanks!

Have you done Green and Black's lemon drizzle cake with chocolate drops in? Scrummy! www.plus2point4.co.uk/2010/10/15/national-chocolate-week-lemon-drizzle-cake-with-sunken-dark-chocolate-chunks/

Hmmm not sure about lemon and chocolate, does it really work?

LadyGrace, unfortunately there is no way I'll get away with brownies, I make them all the tine and these girls eat them all the time!

Anyone else? I thought I'd be inundated with suggestions!

Quite like the look of the Nigella recipe. Thanks.

I have a recipe for Orange Polenta cake which is really yummy (picture on my profile of it)

Terpsichore · 26/05/2011 15:53

I can vouch for a seriously good cheesecake-swirled brownie recipe, if you're interested. On Smitten Kitchen's blog here

Terpsichore · 26/05/2011 15:56

Sorry, just seen that brownies won't cut it! In which case, I can also recommend this. I know ginger's a bit of a love-it-or-hate-it flavour, but it's a divine cake - really aromatic and sticky.

This looks good and a little different from just a cake.

lukewarmmama · 26/05/2011 16:01

Minicooper how could you! I love love love that cake, used to make it all the time, before we had dd1 and all her allergies. Had forgotten all about it. The whole Green and Black's cookbook is fab.

Terpsichore · 26/05/2011 16:03

MaryAnnSingleton, does that orange polenta cake have any flour in it? Do you mind passing on the recipe? You're got me interested now - it looks really moist and delicious! (sorry, hi-jacking thread...Blush)

Polkadott · 26/05/2011 16:25

Blueberry cake with cream cheese icing - YUM

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/05/2011 17:45

yes,it has flour but I used gluten-free - I think also you could put some ground almonds in and a bit more orange syrup than stated in the recipe...hang on and I will find it....

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/05/2011 17:47

Terpsichore here you are : orange polenta cake

I like the looks of this--Chocolate Caramel Layer Cake www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1161646/chocolate-and-caramel-layer-cake

GoingLoopyLou · 26/05/2011 19:14

Popbiscuit I made that on Easter Monday, was HUGE and so sickly. My niece loved it though, she ate a huge wedge and took 3/4's of it home. She's a size 8 too and can eat anything!

Hmmm cheesecake has got me thinking now, I quite often make a malteser one so couldn't make that but might try to find an alternative.

MaryAnn, thanks! Looks great.

Popbiscuit · 26/05/2011 19:23

GoingLoopy-did the layers turn out the way they look in the picture? It DOES look sickly but my DH loves anything with choc and caramel so thought it would be good birthday cake for him.

trixymalixy · 26/05/2011 19:26

Nigella's flora's famous courgette cake. Sooo delicious!!

allhailtheaubergine · 26/05/2011 19:30

There is only one answer to this question.

Hummingbird cake.

You are welcome.

GoingLoopyLou · 26/05/2011 20:10

It was easier than you'd expect, though you need lots of bowls! And yes, it looked exactly the same, I was impressed with the recipe.

Allhail - You are not going to believe this but the only stipulation for Cake Club is no banana as 3 of 6 of us hate it! I never thought to mention that!
