Think i have to break the cycle but my nearly 3 year old still has milk in the morning and before bed. I didnt really think about it as it was just routine but now she is coming up to 3 i am thinking surely this is more of a baby thing to do.

What do they recommend for intake? Cant find it anytwhere...
Thanks

I'm 29 and still like warm milk before bed... It's healthy and contains a small amount of melatonin so helps me sleep. Of course, I'm talking about cows milk - if you're talking about breast milk, I have no idea Wink

stillbobbysgirl · 03/02/2011 17:01

Well my nine year old and nearly 7 year old still have a glass of milk and a biccie before bed! Why break the cycle? What harm is it doing? Its a nice little wind down/have a little chat 10 minutes before bed in our house.

There are no rules you know! Smile

stillbobbysgirl · 03/02/2011 17:02

oh are you talking breast milk or just a drink?

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 03/02/2011 17:03

yup. she's almost 4 and still has a beaker of milk before bed, and on waking. it's just a drink, right?

Buda · 03/02/2011 17:03

Why stop it? She likes it. It is good for her.

My DS is now 9 but until he was 4 he had a bottle of milk morning and evening. Well he actually had hypoallergenic formula but idea was the same. He stopped when he was ready.

We have issues with dairy but I know lots of children who have milk before bed.

Yes, and still in a bottle Blush

simpson · 03/02/2011 17:11

My DD (3) has a beaker of milk before bed (hypoallergenic)

Its when she drinks most of her milk intake so I will definately keep doing it.

Sh does not drink it in a bottle though, although quite a few of her little friends of the same age still have a bottle before bed.

bethan37 · 03/02/2011 17:15

Its normal cows milk. I didnt know if this was why she doesnt eat that much in the day (mind you she would eat more if she didnt keep saying yuck to everything!) Its full fat and maybe should be semi skimmed now.
Didnt know if i was keeping her too 'babyish' as she gets into my bed and has milk then breakfast at 8ish..

My 2 dses (5 and 6) have a glass of milk before bed and every morning with breakfast.

I didn't think anything of it - it's a good source of calcium and they love it.

Dh is 47 and he drinks loads of milk. Smile

purplepidjin · 03/02/2011 17:20

Bethan, that sounds like a lovely routine! If you said you were giving her coke at bedtime, yabu. If you have a bed-wetting problem, then cutting out bedtime drinks is a good idea. But for a 3yo going through a fussy phase, full fat milk is pretty good - very nutritious, gets plenty of fluids in etc. If it works for you and her, where's the problem?

stillbobbysgirl · 03/02/2011 17:22

ah keep her 'babyish' - they are big strapping kids before you know it! Enjoy the little morning cuddle for as long as she wants it. These are special days you will both remember.

Thats what I like about our boys little milk time before bed - they are little boys sitting in their pj's on the sofa having a nice little time

they will be out snogging girls and binge drinking soon enough!

WowOoo · 03/02/2011 17:23

My four year old still has a glass of full fat cows milk before bed.

nowwearefour · 03/02/2011 17:25

No! and hasnt since i stopped breastfeeding her at 13 months. she has milk with her tea.

Confuzzeled · 03/02/2011 17:55

My dd, almost 4, has started to have a cup of warm milk before bed again, in an attempt to get her to sleep a bit longer. As long as she goes for a wee before bed, it doesn't matter.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/02/2011 17:58

Yes, my 3yo still has a bottle of milk at bedtime and in the morning (and during the day sometimes as well!)

HingCogNeeto · 03/02/2011 18:01

I am going to be incredibly boring and ask you all to think about teeth cleaning after the last bottle before sleep

Bumperrlicious · 03/02/2011 18:12

Alway do!

simpson · 03/02/2011 18:12

My DD does not take her milk to bed so once its finished then its teeth cleaned and then bed iyswim.

TrollyMcTrollPants · 03/02/2011 18:17

I have another bottle monster here(DS2 3yrs). Hace tried weaning him off it but he starts in with the "Milk milk!! Milk milk!!" Its like living with a tiny Cravendale advert...

Mummy2Bookie · 03/02/2011 20:40

Well I have not been three for a long long time but I always have a glass of milk before bed. No harm.

kalo12 · 03/02/2011 20:44

ds 3 has a cup of weak cocoa before bed and in morning, plus during day if he wants

munstersmum · 03/02/2011 20:50

DS 6 has a mug of milk while we read stories at bedtime. It's a nice snuggly time. Also he barely drinks at all at school so any drink anytime I can get it in!

MerryMarigold · 03/02/2011 20:53

My twins stopped milk before bed when they stopped breastfeeding at 20 months. I think it also helps with keeping them dry at night. My ds1 stopped when I took away his bottle (he only had it at night) at around 2.5 years old. But I know 5 year olds who still have milk before bed, so...whatever you like I think, though the morning and night seems quite a lot. Won't cereal in the morning do?

MegBusset · 03/02/2011 20:58

Yes DS1 (nearly 4) has milk before bed most nights and with that pink milkshake powder in it! I do brush teeth after...
