Is Ice Cream and chocolate acceptable dinner party pudding?

We have friends coming for dinner tonight. Just an informal thing - more about wine and company than food. DH is making lasagne and we have nice bread and salad. I made cake but it hasn't really worked - if I go and buy a tub of ice cream and big bar of chocolate do you think that would be okay for pud? Have too much else on to try to make anything else at such short notice.

I'd be happy with it. :) But my backup plan is usually berries, ready-made meringues and ice cream or cream. Looks marginally fancier.

Yes it is - please invite me Grin

I've been to a dinner party where 'pud' was just a big bar of very nice chocolate - perfect, as we were stuffed already!

Alternatively you could do ice-cream and make hot chocolate sauce - there's loads of recipes around.

I usually do the meringue(or fancy biscuity type thing) and berries, usually with greek yog rather than cream

Why don't you knock up http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/vegetarian-recipes/spinach-aamp-feta-filo-pie-cucumber-sala the coated ice cream Jamie did on yesterday's 30 mins show?

gah! sorry working link here (scroll down for ice cream bit)

Sounds perfect.

You could make the chocolate into a sauce - melt the icecream and add some cream (don't let the cream get too hot or the cream will curdle). Serve the sauce warm. Then eat the leftovers from the jug tomorrow morning to help your hangover Wink

Even better, buy/make some brownies and cut into small chunks to have with the icecream and sauce. Or could the cake you made be used?

Absolutely!

thanks - feel reassured. Hot chocolate sauce seems way to go.

couldn't you make a kind of sundae/trifle, using the failed cake spread with jam then top with ice-cream, chocolate sauce, grated chocolate??? Maybe some fruit in there somewhere (raspberries/fruits of forest from freezer dept would work well?) very simple but could be very impressive?
