Are Supermarkets getting too GREEDY

HI, i just joined this site today and after reading about a topic on supermarkets, i decided to have my say on the subject. Everything has just got so expensive. that i have found it alot cheaper to shop in the asian shops. when you but say fruit from a supermarket it is always under ripe and eventually never ripens and then ends up in the bin. Which i hate as i do not like to waste food. The other day i went to a asian shop to get 2 lamb chops and 1 red pepper and ( wait for it ) the chops cost 66p and they had all the fat trimmed off also. the red pepper was 30p. I know that mums dont have much time on there hands but shopping around realy does pay off.Markets are much cheaper too than supermarkets. I think the supermarkets make a huge profit out of us....

Yes and do you know who is the heiress to TXXXO's profits? that woman who sold off council houses to tory voters in Westminster i have boycotted Tx since I realised that. I think most fruit is under ripe in the shops now.

kazwencol · 05/10/2010 21:58

Arrr the very supermarket i was talking about. I think something needs to be done as they are getting away with too much these days. Well i have to say that im not going to be using them anymore either but they will still make there millions.

What always amazes me is that councillors vote for the supermkts which put their voters out of work and ruin the town centres. Don't get me started on the environmental 'benefits' of the huge free car parks!!

kazwencol · 06/10/2010 17:54

I totally agree with you on that point too.
What gets me is there slogan" Every Little Helps" what that should say is "every little that you gives us makes un richer" Sorry i couldnt resist that little comment. nice talking to you.

Yes the supermarkets get away with appalling practices as well as lining their pockets. Have you read 'Shopped' kazwencol, it's a real eye-opener Shock

AngelaChase · 06/10/2010 20:11

It's by Joanna Blythman btw

ppeatfruit · 07/10/2010 12:55

And you kazwencol Yes that slogan infuriates me too; 'cos it may be cheap to the shopper but all it does is encourage factory farmed animals and exploitation of the producers globally. GRRRRRH

As beef and sheep farmers (now ex - thank you Mr Levy) People have no no no idea how this uk industry controls prices. Tesco control numerous slaughter yards in the UK and because they have the majority of stock going through there - this controls the price right down to the livestock markets. Not many years ago our perfecto lambs where being bought up for £30! (less than a haircut!) Beleive me the great farmers of the UK are not benefiting for any retail price.

I boycotted Tescos many years ago and since they have gone down market by bringing in the value products to help those poeple out there because "they are your friend and you can trust them" - Points are there to control and manipulate you not bonus you for being loyal why are people so gulable?

It still surprises me why people are so ignorant to what these supermarkets have done to this country.

ppeatfruit · 07/10/2010 13:57

Bacon I honestly think that most people don't want to know. I'm sorry that you are ex farmers it is shocking that good producers can't make a decent living, is there no help from the govt. for you?

ppeatfruit · 07/10/2010 14:03

I admire Hugh Fearnley Whitt.. for trying to bring the issue of factory farmed animals on to the telly at least there is someone defending yr interests bacon and fighting Tescos.

kazwencol · 07/10/2010 19:11

Did anyone watch the programe on channel 4 last night called Food: What Goes in Your Basket, at all. The topic last night was looking at childrens lunch boxes and what goes in them. A well known fruit drink that we give our kids has 5 teaspoons of suger in it. GOSH we wouldnt give our kids a cup of water with that amount of suger in it would we? I was shocked at what i thought was a healthy drink was in fact laced with suger...

yes i know that alot of local shops are shutting down too, thanks to the over priced rents they are charged. I guess im lucky in that respect as i live in london and there are alot of asian shops, with alot of products that i can buy at a much cheaper rate than the supermarkets. There are also alot of good markets too.

Hi, I am very sorry to here that you are an ex farmer as i know that they put alot of hard work and alot of hours in to try and make a decent wage. Watching the programme on food last night did hightlight alot of the issues both home and abroad on the plight of farmers.

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 07/10/2010 21:20

I saw that programme kaz I ALWAYS read the ingredients so i knew those drinks have nearly the same amount of sugar as coke has and marketed directly at DCs it's so cynical isn't it?

Fifichef · 07/10/2010 21:20

It's good to see the supermarket subject being brought up again after last weeks rant - I was part of it!! Yes they are greedy and what is really annoying is that nobody, but nobody, is prepared to sort them out! The farmers are being manipulated by the supermarkets. Next in the food chain - the food manufacturers are getting away with 'blue murder' because they are allowed to regulate themselves and then we the consumers, at the paying end, are having the wool pulled over our eyes with devious labelling.

kazwencol · 07/10/2010 22:33

Well i never can read the labels as i never have my glasses with me when i need them, but will make a point of taking them from now on.GOD did you see the plans for a huge cow farm/factory thingy. I WAS shocked and im glad the people who live there are kicking up a fuss.
I have to be honest i knew that coke had alot of suger but didnt think it would be in a childs drink. Is there no end to what they will do and no wonder some families think that there kids are hyper-active.
Its so sad that you cant trust anyone in the food industry.

OP posts:
kazwencol · 07/10/2010 22:40

I only joined this site this week so i missed the topic/rant last week ( DAMN )
I must say that i think i could talk about supermarkets till the cows come home(pardon the pun). The trouble is that they have us by the short and curlies realy as people need supermarkets especially if they have no local shops near by. Butchers too are becoming a thing of the past too. Maybe we should start up a petition and send it to number 10, not that it would do any good but something should be done to stop them as they have gone too far.

OP posts:
kazwencol · 07/10/2010 22:46

UUUMMMM I have just seen an ad from the very supermarket im taking about on this page and its says TXXXOS REAL FOOD. Well they should look at what real food is ?????

AngelaChase · 08/10/2010 06:54

Yes Riven, It's sick that the independent local shops can't afford to sell cheap also the metro shops DON't sell cheap even though they could afford to, thus forcing everyone into their cars to out of town malls etc.

Riven I too am carless. I go to a diff supermarket (not Tescos which is actually easiest for me to get to) and then get a taxi home. It's cheaper to do that than run a car.

Sadly the only local bakeries are Greggs style places and the butchers all seem to rate themselves on how good their pies are rather than selling a good quality lamb chop so doing the rounds of the small shops is out.
