Urgent help with vegetarian gelatin

KatyMac · 23/09/2010 18:38

My recipe says use hot

My packet of geletine says dissolve in cold

How do I heat it up? Or can I just use hot water?

KatyMac · 23/09/2010 18:58

The packet says to boil it? Like in a pan

you don't do that with gelatin

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 23/09/2010 19:05

actually i may be lying!!!!!

because i need to make them without egg, which makes it particularly difficult.
so of course if you're using egg whites and it's only the gelatine you're changing it might work????

hmmm

which gelatine do you have?

KatyMac · 23/09/2010 19:05

It's an odd marshmallow recipe anyway

OP posts:
KatyMac · 23/09/2010 19:06

Just treated DD to some veggie marshmallows from thet site and will report back. I have tried making my owm < sob sob> but with little success.

She is having a baby tea next weekend and I shall do a Taa-Dah ! moment and present her with the aforementioned sweeties. Grin

thisisyesterday · 24/09/2010 10:58

i am now tempted to go and have another try at mine.
last time was an unmitigated disaster. mainly beucase i am an idiot, but partly because of my ingredients lol

KatyMac · 24/09/2010 11:03

Well my recipe has eggs loads of sugar & gelatin

But I had the proportions wrong as I used the geletin/sugar from the recipe that didn't work

DH says he is looking forward to the gooey stuff it with ice cream Hmm

OP posts:
trumpton · 24/09/2010 11:26

See I can't use gelatine as DD is vegetarian and marshmallows just are too too difficult without.

KatyMac · 24/09/2010 11:31

Using vegetarian geletine

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 24/09/2010 11:34

part of the problem is that the veggie gelatine just doesn't work the same as animal gelatine. it gives quite a different texture. if you've ever used it to make jelly you'll know what i mean! Grin

it's an age old problem tho, and the reason why you can't seem to get them anywhere in shops etc

trumpton · 24/09/2010 20:47

Ah I see Katymac I thought you were using animal gelatine. Do post if you have success ( even tho' I have bought some I am quite willing to have another bash if someone else ( that's you ) has done all the testing )Grin
