Whiffy chicken-WWYD?

winnybella · 12/09/2010 16:08

Got it just yesterday and in theory it's good for another 3 days.

Took the wrapping off and smelled it- definitely off smaell inside- fine outside. Rinsed it and much better, but still that smell inside- not too bad, but definitely there.

I was planning on making chicken noodle soup for dinner. It will simmer for a couple hours but I am a bit scared whether we could still get sick (MN's fault, I wasn't aware before that there are toxins that heat won't kill).

So can't decide whether it's just a slightly off bird that will be fine in soup, or whether I'm putting my family's life at risk.

I wouldn't use it

Rindercella · 12/09/2010 16:13

I wouldn't eat it. I would always go by my sense of smell before a use by date. Smelly chicken = off chicken imo.

BeenBeta · 12/09/2010 16:23

Had this with some a few weeks ago. Took it back and the shop exchanged it.

Sometime chicken smells because of the food they have been fed of but I dont care. I just take it back.

winnybella · 12/09/2010 16:28

Crap.

I haven't got anything else for dinner.

It almost didn't smell at the bottom end, just at the neck iyswim

And I can't take it back, because I have already put it in water, thinking I would get a lot of "it'll be fine in a soup'.

Errr no. Back away from the dodgy chicken.

winnybella · 12/09/2010 16:45

OMG. Went back into the kitchen where it was simmering and gagged. It was definitely off.

My whole kitchen stinks.

So that's 8 euros down the drain and nothing for dinner Angry

egg and chips

Igglybuff · 12/09/2010 16:49

What have you got in the cupboard?

winnybella · 12/09/2010 16:49

Nope, we had eggs already.

What's interesting, well for me at least, is that the sausages we opened today were off, as well. But there wasn't any power failure and if someone left fridge door opened, it would get noticed.

Fuck.

Not much, was planning on shopping tomorrow.

One option is potato pancakes (got potatoes and flour). I'm Polish, I don't mind, not sure about DP Grin.

Well, I'm normally very careful, but I guess I really wanted the chicken soup tonight and it clouded my judgement Grin. Also, precisely because I can be quite anal about freshness etc, I thought I was OTT about the degree of whiffiness and it would be fine iyswim.

Can't take it back, it stank so badly I threw it in the bins outside.

OP posts:
Tigerdrivesbackin · 12/09/2010 17:06

Dig it out of the bins and take it back. Better still, ring the supermarket and make them take it back. I've done this with dodgy prawns (sell by dates mean nothing either way) and they sent some poor kid about 25 miles round trip on a scooter to deliver me some fresh ones. Sounds like a porno film, but believe me it's true.

Anyway

Just get on the blower to them and kick up.

Shiiiiinnnneyyyyyyy!!!

How are you? I'm back I think.

Or just mucking about a bit!

Anyway, that girl shouldn't eat that chicken, not unless she wants a serious and unplanned weight loss plan.

No way I'm getting anywhere close to that chicken again.

I'll just never shop there again-it wasn't my usual supermarket and I very much doubt we get the same level of customer service here in France as you guys in the UK.

Oh, well, potato pancakes it is.

Sorry for the hijack folks.

Sort of. Life's got v busy and I have (gulp) joined an expensive gym so time is limited (had to be expensive or I wouldn't go). But as winter drawers on (as they say) I expect there'll be more time to blether.

Winny-I once had a smelly chick-took it back to supermarket, made a great big stink fuss and got money off vouchers.-Result!!

Went back home, took some other meat out of fridge and guess what-that was off too.
The fridge was broken Blush.

Have you checked your fridge?? Smile

winnybella · 12/09/2010 18:29

Good question, that. The indicator thingy was black (not good), when I changed the setting to high (from medium) it went to the OK icon. But it could've been black because I opened the fridge few times while getting stuff out for dinner and the temp inside dropped, not because it's been malfunctioning for days.

Butter etc fine, hasn't melted, smells fine.

But the sausages were off, too.

Could have been the bloody fridge. Sad
