Re-watching Ghost 36 years on

Anyone else done this recently with fresh eyes?

Such a brilliant film! I first watched it aged 12 at a kids club on holiday (I think we were slightly too young but I loved it then too).

My take as a fully fledged adult:

Molly was incredibly well put together and apparently chilled out in the aftermath of Sam's death. She didn't seem overly emotional or falling apart as perhaps I would have after the murder of my life partner, especially as she's presumably still got to somehow pay for their new (huge) apartment on her own. Unless there was a very quick insurance payout I suppose.

Did Sam's spirit stay because he heard Molly calling him just after he died OR because he had important truth finding out to do?

Whoopi Goldberg was frigging fantastic as Oda May! So funny and looked stunning in every single scene.

Train ghost still just as terrifying!!

Carl was much better looking than Sam (imo) until he got to the sweaty panicky stage.

The SFX stand up, I think.

Did JKR get her inspo for the dementors from this film?

The story is top notch.

I know there's the age old question mark over what things the ghosts can touch or not touch (floor of train vs side of train for example) but I choose not to dwell on that for the sake of the story!

They just don't make films like this any more.

Anyone else got any views? I'd love to hear them!

I love Ghost. I went to Turkey on holiday in the early 90s which was known as a good place to buy pirate videos. I bought Ghost and Sleeping with the Enemy. 80s and 90s films were the best. Just rewatched all the Back to the Future films on iplayer.

I loved Ghost now Dh took me on a date to see it, he fell asleep 😂 Sam stayed because he couldn't pass over because of his murder, imo he loved Molly more than she loved him perhaps thatis why she seemed so meh about his death, Demi Moore had no range though so maybe she was just a terrible actress!

Whoopi Goldberg was apparently touted by Patrick Swayze for her role, she really made the film.

30birthdaygirl · 24/09/2026 21:52

@Lomonald he fell asleep?? No way! 😂

Agree re Demi sadly. Not sure if I've actually seen her in anything else now I think about it.

"It's amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.”

Makes me bawl my eyes out. Sad

Shloopie · 24/09/2026 22:10

I'm very fond of Ghost.

I love the apartment, I love Oda May Brown, I love Molly's hair, I love how genuine and endearing Sam is, I love how the baddy gets his comeuppance, I love when Sam walks away in the end to the people waiting for him, I love Unchained Melody.

I'll miss you, Oda Mae.
I'll miss you too, Sam. You're all right.

Yes he fell asleep.tbf he had been on an on call shift at work

She was in a few good men she wa fine in it the same "meh" as molly, she was also in a really creepy film with michael Douglas about her having sex with him for a million dollars!

Indeed it was Robert Redford ! Ive clearly misremembered.she did do a really weird one with Micheal Douglas, he was in his all women are awful era

Lomonald · 24/09/2026 23:26

The Michael Douglas film.was .Disclosure, the other not Michael Douglas film was indecent proposal.

DrFoxtrot · 24/09/2026 23:28

My favourite scene is when Oda Mae goes to the bank to close the account then has to hand over the cheque to the nuns 😂

In fairness, she was married to Woody Harrelson. I’d have shagged Robert Redford without thinking twice, even though he was old enough to be her dad. I think I was an anxious young person from a poor background because I don’t remember the sex, I remember Woody Harrelson losing all their money at roulette when they have bet their last cent and were about to have the bank take everything. And the scene they’re wandering around expensive shops and Demi Moore nicks free chocolates.

Oda Mae makes Ghost. And Carl does ‘sweaty and panicking’ terribly well. ( I love the subway ghost — the actor who played him, Vincent Schiavelli, had so many small but crucial parts in the most unlikely things from Amadeus to Star Trek: the Next Generation to ZZ Top videos. He had Marian Syndrome, hence the distinctive features.)

Though I can’t watch the scenes where the shadow demons come up out of the shadows and drag dead baddies down to hell, but when I had post-natal psychosis the shadows on the floor started looking like that and talking to me. Not fun.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 24/09/2026 23:46

I saw it about 10 years ago with Dh who had never seen it. I was prepared for cheesy rubbish, misremembered by my 12 yr old self. But I loved it! And he agreed it was a great film.

The pottery seen has been parodied so many times I nearly forgot it wasn't a joke. I kept thinking of the extra random hand that arrives into the mix in the Naked Gun movies.

I suspect Disclosure hasn't dated well. Wasn't it about technology, possibly the beginning of the online world?

Vodkamartini3olives · 25/09/2026 02:03

Oh I loved ghost, I went to see it in the cinema weirdly with my brother and his then girlfriend. He cried his eyes out. I can't watch it now,.can't watch anything with Whoopi Goldberg these days. I live in the US now and seeing her on the view has put me right off her.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 25/09/2026 02:20

Love Ghost. Seen it so many times and still bawl my eyes out at the end!

harveythehorse · 25/09/2026 02:38

I don't think many women would have required payment to spend the night with Robert Redford 😂

Pussygaloregalapagos · 25/09/2026 02:42

I still always want to shout ' Get off my train' when I go on the London Underground! Had my hair cut like Demi back then too.

HoobleDooble · 25/09/2026 02:51

I went to see it with 2 of my best friends, we were 17/18 and came out looking like Alice Cooper we'd all cried so much. I lost one of them to cancer a couple of years ago and wish she'd shove a penny up my door to let me know she's ok and out of pain.

Goodmorningeveryone26 · 25/09/2026 02:52

I rewatched Ghost recently too. Still a fantastic movie

Gateappreciation · 25/09/2026 04:07

My dh went to the toilet or to get a hotdog, and didn’t believe me when I told him Patrick Dwaze had died! Ie. The whole point of the film!

Robert Redford, I’d have him over Patrick Swaze any day.

Gateappreciation · 25/09/2026 04:08

Point Blamk is another good Patrick Swaze film.
