Re-watching Ghost 36 years on

Anyone else done this recently with fresh eyes?

Such a brilliant film! I first watched it aged 12 at a kids club on holiday (I think we were slightly too young but I loved it then too).

My take as a fully fledged adult:

Molly was incredibly well put together and apparently chilled out in the aftermath of Sam's death. She didn't seem overly emotional or falling apart as perhaps I would have after the murder of my life partner, especially as she's presumably still got to somehow pay for their new (huge) apartment on her own. Unless there was a very quick insurance payout I suppose.

Did Sam's spirit stay because he heard Molly calling him just after he died OR because he had important truth finding out to do?

Whoopi Goldberg was frigging fantastic as Oda May! So funny and looked stunning in every single scene.

Train ghost still just as terrifying!!

Carl was much better looking than Sam (imo) until he got to the sweaty panicky stage.

The SFX stand up, I think.

Did JKR get her inspo for the dementors from this film?

The story is top notch.

I know there's the age old question mark over what things the ghosts can touch or not touch (floor of train vs side of train for example) but I choose not to dwell on that for the sake of the story!

They just don't make films like this any more.

Anyone else got any views? I'd love to hear them!

It wasn't Michael Douglas it was Robert Redford I believe

Jo Brand: 'Sleep with Robert Redford for a million dollars? I'd shag him for a tenner!'

I don't think many women would have required payment to spend the night with Robert Redford 😂

Especially if they were married to whiny architect Woody Harrelson who’d just blown all their money on an about-to-be-repossessed beachfront plot so he can design their dream home!

Uricon2 · 25/09/2026 08:05

There were lots of jokes at the time Indecent Proposal came out about how long it would take to save up the $1million to pay RR. It was a bit of a daffy premise in many ways!

Haven't seen Ghost in years, will after this thread but am already humming That Song (no, not Unchained Melody)

ohthesuspense · 25/09/2026 08:16

I don’t think I could watch Ghost again as it made me cry so much. I cannot cope emotionally these days with films like that 😳. I did love it, though. I was about 14-15 and desperately wanted to look like Demi Moore (I look absolutely nothing like Demi Moore!)

Gateappreciation · 25/09/2026 08:22

I think we all wanted to look like Demi Moore!

I suspect Disclosure hasn't dated well. Wasn't it about technology, possibly the beginning of the online world?

Yes she was a Ceo of a tech company or something, and accused Michael Douglas of sexual harassment because he refused her sex. Awful film.

Yep. I had the haircut. Molly was cool. I must have misremembered it , I thought she was a sobbing mess.

dreamingofgoodhair · 25/09/2026 09:11

Does anyone remember Truly Madly Deeply? My favourite ghost film. Juliet Stevenson and Alan Rickman.

Yeah, it might've been a bit more if a struggle for Demi's character has the millionaire been played by, say, Danny De Vito.

Demi was one of THE actresses in the 90s but she made that disastrous Striptease film and then laid low for a few years before coming back in Charlie's Angels 2. She was amazing in The Substance last year and it's a shame she missed out on the Oscar.

We were in our teens and went to watch Ghost, my friend has a phobia of blood and she fainted during the window scene. I took her out of the cinema to look after her and we missed the rest of the movie. Still best friends decades later, poor love still goes all clammy at the sight of blood!
Watched it again since, such a great film. And YES to Truly, Madly, Deeply. Such a beautiful film 💗

IrradiatedHaggis · 25/09/2026 09:17

I recently rewatched it and it was fantastic, both DH and I were sobbing by the end.
I watched it as a child, and think I had a false memory of the scene where Sam's ghost possesses Whoopee Goldberg and they dance - I was sure there was kissing? But that wasn't the case and it was just really emotional.

@Lomonald he fell asleep?? No way! 😂

Agree re Demi sadly. Not sure if I've actually seen her in anything else now I think about it.

Try The Substance! Brilliant film. She's amazing in that.

I just think she was a product of the 80s early 90s I liked her in a a Few good men.

What did you re-watch it on? I have trouble finding my favourite old films to watch

Just don't get Phoebe to cut your hair.

(I feel like everyone on this thread will get that joke! 😉)

I found the dvd in a charity shop.

I have a list of old films that I can't find on streaming services (or cost too much) that I keep in my phone and look for them in every charity shop I find. It usually only costs £1 and then you have it forever.

The pottery seen has been parodied so many times I nearly forgot it wasn't a joke. I kept thinking of the extra random hand that arrives into the mix in the Naked Gun movies.

I laughed out loud reading that thanks @Dontlletmedownbruce
Thankfully didn't think of it myself at the time or it would have somewhat dampened the vibe!! 🤣

KiIIingMeDeftly · 25/09/2026 13:08

I remember all the talk about the pottery scene but watching it now, it's actually fairly tame as far as sex scenes go.

The Substance looks far too gory and frightening for me, but I saw Demi Moore in a documentary made by Andrew McCarthy a couple of years ago about the Brat Pack, and she came across as surprisingly sane, unaffected and balanced. Though that might have been in the context of some of the other former Brat Packers who seemed far more fragile.

She also apparently remained very friendly with Bruce Willis since they broke up and supports him and his family during his sad deteriorating illness.

I always wondered what she saw in Ashton Kutcher - is it just me? Could never fathom it! He and Bruce were so incredibly different.

😆That’s was a brilliant scene in Freinds!

In fairness, she was married to Woody Harrelson. I’d have shagged Robert Redford without thinking twice, even though he was old enough to be her dad. I think I was an anxious young person from a poor background because I don’t remember the sex, I remember Woody Harrelson losing all their money at roulette when they have bet their last cent and were about to have the bank take everything. And the scene they’re wandering around expensive shops and Demi Moore nicks free chocolates.

I came on to say I didnt realise Demi Moore had been married to both Woody Harrelson AND Bruce Willis…! And then I twigged!
