What are your 3-4 favorite WWII movies? And if you can ponder why they're your favorites, do include that.

Also good for playing 'spot the actor'.

A Bridge Too Far - is a good one for that, they are all in it. Its a good Sunday afternoon watch

The Book Thief - The ending pulls at you heart strings

Nightingale is soon to be a film.

All my favourite films have been mentioned except for one, so I'm putting it down here incase someone wants to watch it, because it's fantastic. It's The 12th Man, the true story about a Norwegian resistance fighter who leaves Shetland on a fishing boat to go to occupied Norway and gets captured by the Nazis. It's got Jonathan Rhys Meyers in it.

Hope and Glory is currently on Iplayer

The Pianist. Adrian Brody deserved his Oscar for a very moving performance.

Saving private Ryan. The opening scene is jaw dropping.

I liked the more recent 'Dunkirk'. I liked the three different stories in their different time zones.

I liked 'A Town Like Alice' because it's a lovely love story, too. I read the book.
It was made into a TV serial with Bryan Brown in it and I liked that more than the Peter Finch film.

The Bridge On The River Quai. Even if you're busy you've got to stop with your eyes on the screen when the water's gone down and Alec Guiness is trying to find out what's happened and thereby mess up the whole scheme, until he realises.

In the 1950s I saw 'The Battle Of The River Plate', with parents. Lansdorf having to make the decision to scuttle his ship and the American reporter excitedly telling them back home what was happening. Lovely scenes of ships against the sky.

Got to love Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr in 'Heaven Knows, Mr. Allyson'. Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree With Anyone Else But Me.

Oh, I forgot 'One Life' and 'Operation Mincemeat'.

Someone asked me at the time if 'Schindler's List' was a good film. Well, no, not in the usual sense, but necessary.

When the American tank came round the corner? I wept all the way home.

I am also reminded of 'Charlotte Gray' and 'One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing', reading backwards through this thread.

Upping this to add that the new De Gaulle films (they’ve made parts 2 & 2) are fantastic. I watched part 1 (in French) and am going to follow up with part 2 this week. I was absolutely transfixed.

’Pressure’ comes out with Andrew Scott this week; am going to drag my son to watch this one.

Have Stalag 17 and King Rat been mentioned yet? Both are set in POW camps.

The Railway Man is also very good. It is set many years after the war, with flashbacks of the main character as a POW during WW2.

Saw this today. It's quite a short movie but some good character portrayals.

Day landings . Brilliant, highly recommended. One of the few remaining true WWII stories

I adore Woman in a Dressing Gown. It’s just a perfect early depiction of a clearly depressed woman who doesn’t know it and soldiers on, day after day. Also a fantastic example of kitchen sink drama (my fave).

Dunkirk is very good.

Also Saving Private Ryan

Schindler's List - extremely moving especially the first time I saw it in the cinema.

Carve Her Name With Pride. The story of Violette Szabo, an ordinary woman who became a resistance worker in France and was captured and executed by the Nazis. The courage of these people was breathtaking in the face of Nazi cruelty.

The Dam Busters - a good story well told.

The Darkest Hour - when we saw if in the cinema it got a standing ovation.

There is a lovely bench in Hay on Wye which commemorates the women of SOE, including Violette Szabo. Tania Szabo lives in Wales and is on Facebook

I remember this one too!

The Dambusters, my uncle was in Bomber Command & was killed. I'm obsessed with anything to do with them as he is my hero.
