Gutting disappointment disclosure day - SPOILERS

I sooooo wanted to love this film, I was excited all day to see it, John Williams?! Spielberg??? Alien epic?!?! YES YES

But as I filed out of the packed cinema with everyone else walking in stony unsure silence my first words were “well that wasn’t what I expected” and by that I expected it to be good

i actually found it bad

Emily blunt was exceptional I will say that, I enjoyed it when she started speaking other languages and had hope it would be deliciously mysterious happenings like that to come….

I also like the way the aliens, when we got to see them for the 2 minutes they were in the film, walked…and I liked their fingers

thats it for things I liked unless you count how much I enjoyed Josh O’Connors stealth mode in hiding behind a 2 foot slatted fence with gaping gaps in it 2 yards away from 50 military guys not trained to look around.

can we seriously not get a real fox to sit and walk? No? Let’s make one that looks ridiculous, same with the deer, and the bird, I was completely removed from the whole film every time cgi made an appearance.

car chase, car chase, car being dragged FAR TOO LONG by a high speed train, like that guy would miss shooting them from there too

no chemistry between the characters, I know what the film wanted me to feel, what messages it was going for, but if I don’t feel them then what’s the point

anyone else feel the same?

Completely agree OP! Soooo disappointed. It was just a film about someone trying to disclose a government secret and someone trying to stop them. Well that’s been done a million times before.. Didn’t really matter what the secret was.

teenagerlegproblems · 14/06/2026 12:22

I thought as well that the point where he was suddenly in a crop circle that he would realise what it was and see it as a warning about the device ? Then it went in a different direction which threw me off a bit

sakura06 · 14/06/2026 16:54

Absolutely hated it. Lacked a story. Lacked a message. Hated the theological musing of Jane about the existence of God. Hated the CGI animals. I did enjoy Emily Blunt’s performance and am quite fond of Josh O’Connor.

So many questions too:
Why didn’t Wardex just kill Daniel?
Why didn’t Daniel set off across the fields when he saw the agents?
Why didn’t they blindfold Jane in the motel room?
Why did Margaret need to remember the aliens visiting as a child? Why was it only her bedroom reconstructed?
What did Hugo want?
What did the aliens want?
Why was WW3 going on and how was it relevant?

Britpopbaby · 14/06/2026 17:55

I wondered why a place guarding a massive secret would allow the use of USB sticks!

Thebigonesgetaway · 14/06/2026 18:03

I did not think it was good at all. And I’m usually easily pleased. I fell asleep in the middle of it. It was entirely predictable and I was so bored with the story line I started focusing on Emily blunts face , and that’s a first, as I don’t care about too much filler or Botox, but I was so bored with the movie, and there were so many close ups I kept thinking gosh she’s had too much filler and Botox, her face was almost moon like and lacked definition.

snd the aliens were so awful, it was the typical this is what they look like, nothing new here. They didn’t even try to reimagine them.

we go to the movies often and this was the first time none of us enjoyed it and all thought there was nothing redeemable about it.

chimichangaz · 15/06/2026 22:03

I went to see this today - I could see from IMDB beforehand that reviews weren’t great but I’d been looking forward to this for months after seeing it trailed.

Agree with quite a lot that’s been said - Colin Firth was dreadful - like some hammy old thespian - Daniel in the field when the agents arrived at the house had me huffing about how unrealistic it was, the train sequence was just unbelievable, the ending was a huge disappointment - but I still enjoyed my trip to the cinema! I was entertained, at least. But maybe I am easily pleased 🤣🤣 I do love Emily Blunt though 😍

MadisonAvenue · 15/06/2026 22:15

We were going to see it last week but cancelled due to it being a long film and both of us feeling really tired that day and not wanting to fall asleep midway through. Looks like we made the right decision.

ScratchyPants · 15/06/2026 22:16

It was 3 hours of torture and I'll never get that time back.

fartoomuchtoblerone · 15/06/2026 22:30

Truly pish. Like, astoundingly bad. It felt like someone had asked chatGPT to make a Steven Spielberg movie.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/06/2026 11:54

Kind of looking forward to seeing this to see how bad it actually is! The reviews from elsewhere mostly saying similar to on here...feel waste of time but same.time very curious!

JulietteNichols · 16/06/2026 14:04

I laughed out loud at the animals. It was dreadful I think it could have been saved if the aliens had turned into Mars Attacks and Sarah JP's head was on a dog as one of the animals.

Thebackrowgal · 16/06/2026 17:28

I saw it today, think I might have dozed off but couldn’t follow some bits. Was Emily blunt and Daniel aliens?
I think the only thing that would have pulled it out of the bag would have been if it was E.T that they wheeled out at the end

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 21/06/2026 21:51

Didnt not enjoy it as much as thought I would! Had some fairly decent moments. The animals however...and then the car chase after car chase after car chase. Oh look train oh no car chase.
Cute aliens though!

twalk71 · 23/06/2026 00:34

I saw interviews later, and they seemed quite jolly. About two-thirds in to seeing the film I'd had the feeling this was either 'about' child abuse or that theme had erupted into the story the makers thought they were telling. Given the timing of the release and Trump and co's dissembling and misdirection the idea of an unwittingly told story seems plausible.

Then the familiarity of the surface details matters less and the last word, the last line, has weight when a man is still president because people choose not listen to the victims of his kind.

heartsinvisiblefury · 24/06/2026 15:58

ET would be turning in his grave at the new collab between aliens and Spielberg.

Rocknrollstar · 24/06/2026 16:06

If we had been watching at home we would have switched off. The last 20 minutes are great and he needs to make a follow up showing what happened after the end of the film.

rose69 · 24/06/2026 16:30

If the aliens are clever enough to fly to earth why do they keep crash landing. I enjoyed the beginning but was laughing by the end.

fundamentallyauthentic · 27/06/2026 19:14

The only truly boring film Spielberg has made, although he hasn’t done anything outstanding since 2002. It was also much too long and there were no emotional stakes. Presumably the cast did it for the dough. Colin Firth was miscast and it was distracting how unhealthy and old he’s looking these days.

It was Emily Blunt’s face that distracted me, laughable she was so supposed to pass for 30s!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 28/06/2026 20:42

Pitch meeting sums it up well..mean more or less saying whats been said on here

fundamentallyauthentic · 28/06/2026 20:43

Just seen the very latest box office figures and boy is it doing badly.

BestIsWest · 29/06/2026 12:33

It was a load of hokum, true but I went in with low expectations and came out having really enjoyed it. Daft fun. Agree there were too many car chases though.

PurpleFlowersShed · 29/06/2026 12:43

I like the theory that the aliens are softening us up with this, and will have a listen to the podcast recommended up-thread. Hope it is way better than Disappointment Day...

I saw the film yesterday and was disappointed. Emily Blunt is looking so plastic to me, although perhaps believable for an American TV person.

Yes, I was disappointed because I thought that was what this film was supposed to be about.
