I love world cinema especially French but it’s been a few years since I’ve really been able to enjoy films regularly and I want to return to enjoying French cinema. I’d appreciate any recommendations. It doesn’t matter if I’ve seen them so I won’t list them here because it’ll remind me of how much I loved them and to watch them again.

TIA

Ooh, good question! I loved Le Bossu (1997 version) when I saw it. Very lush, and great translation into english by Tom Stoppard

Innocence (2004) is one of the only ones I've seen. It was very weird.

If you don’t mind lowbrow stuff, Les Petites Victoires and C’était Mieux Demain.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/03/2026 19:59

Initial thoughts - all very 'French' 😁
Death in a French Garden (the music is gorgeous)
Les Diaboliques (the original, not the shit remake)
Delicatessen
La Grande Bouffe

I'm sure I'll think of others

Les Visiteurs

Thanks all for the recommendations so far. I really appreciate them and I’m equally happy with highbrow, lowbrow or anything inbetween.

La Dentelliere (1977) with Isabelle Huppert - it’s many years since I saw it but I remember enjoying it at the time.

Somersetbaker · 30/03/2026 20:45

La Nuit Americaine, a film about film making, or "Jules et Jim".

Great to see someone else has seen Le Bossu apart from me! I went through a big Daniel Auteuil phase.

I love Daniel Auteuil. He’s my favourite actor by far.

RobinEllacotStrike · 30/03/2026 21:20

Years ago I enjoyed a film “the hairdresser’s husband”. Can’t remember enough to know if I’d still enjoy it now.

betty blue

the Jean de Florette trilogy was fabulous.

I’ve not watched a French film in years.

Cryingatthegym · 30/03/2026 21:27

Hors de Prix (2006) with Audrey Tautou - really funny and well made. One of my fave films ever.

BlessicaBlimpson · 30/03/2026 21:29

Petite Maman
Jules et Jim
Holy Motors

Jfw82 · 30/03/2026 21:30

Le placard

RobinEllacotStrike · 30/03/2026 21:34

Monsieur Hire.

though I’m unsure how I would find it today. Now I want to revisit all these films from my indie/foreign film crazy teens/twenties era.

followed by my “Peter Rabbit/Paddington/Kill me now” era, and then my “my sofa/90 minutes or less/no preaching/make me laugh” era.

I need to revisit.

BotterMon · 30/03/2026 21:37

Le Grand Bleu already mentioned is my favourite. Intouchables is funny and heartbreaking. A beautiful film.

Les Ch'tis is very funny. For a real classic Un Homme et Une Femme is excellent
