Any guesses as to what/who will be nominated for an Oscar?

One of my favourite things to do is to see all the films then stay up
to watch the ceremony. Last year I never seemed to be out of the cinema. This year due to illness I couldn’t. I’m wracking my brain to think what film has had people talking about it. Have you seen anything that has been excellent?

I could be completely wrong, but I have a feeling that Hamnet will sweep at the Oscars. Regardless of the other awards, it just has Oscars written all over it. They love the Shakespeare genre and are likely to favour it over anything musical or comedy based.

It won best dramatic film at The Golden Globes and it is generally much more likely for the film which wins best dramatic film at the Globes to win best picture at the Oscars than the film which wins best comical or musical. Also, the way the academy voting system works (lower voting preferences being as important as first choices) is likely to favour it in the same way that Moonlight beat La La Land.

Jessie Buckley will undoubtedly win best actress and deservedly so. I wouldn't be stunned if Paul Mescal ends up getting best supporting actor too. He hasn't won any of the others, or even been taken seriously by the bookies as a contender to win, but I can see it happening. The Oscars love to throw in a surprise for the acting awards where at least one wins who hasn't won at any other ceremony.

I think it will win at least one of the best director or best screenplay as well and possibly the editing award.

Totally going against the grain of what the bookes and pundits are saying, but I can see it happening. Anora was the big winner at the Oscars last year and it was hardly taken under note at the other ceremonies or predicted as a serious contender by pundits. The academy like to do their own thing.

I'm really hoping that Rose Byrne at least gets a nomination for best actress. Her performance in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You is phenomenal.

Great to see her win best actress in comedy/musical at the Golden Globes and nominated for best actress at SAG Awards.

The nominations were mostly as I expected. I did think that Paul Mescal might get a nomination, but I’m pleased that Delroy Lindo did.
I can’t believe that F1 has been nominated for best picture, it’s easily one of the worst films I’ve ever seen!

IsThisLifeNow · 22/01/2026 14:33

Yes I was a little surprised to see F1 up for best picture. I actually enjoyed it, but its mindless fluff. It looks and sounds good, but nothing unique or inspiring, like an updated version of top gun, or days of thunder.

I saw Hamnet the other day and only thought it was ok, it is well acted though. My favourite movies I've seen from those nominated have been One battle after another, Sinners and Bugonia, loved them all, and the costumes in Frankenstein were gorgeous!

I’m surprised Paul Mescal was snubbed, but he deserved to be. What a pity that Sorry Baby didn’t get anything.

Sixteen nominations! Sixteen!

👏

It's a record! 😀😍🥳

I am also pissed off about Sorry, Baby but this is wonderful ☺️

I’m also a bit puzzled about Hot Milk - which I had thought might pick up one or two. (Don’t think it was out of time?)

And The Life of Chuck - it’s so rare a film actually challenges one’s head.

if you have Sky Sinners is on now for free.

I thought he was excellent in Hamlet.

However, I thought that Jessie Buckley was amazing and I think that she was so good that it probably overshadowed Paul’s performance a bit. Not a criticism at all. I am sure she did not intend to but her performance was so superb that even an otherwise excellent performance by anyone else wouldn’t have been noticed as much.

I still think he deserved to be nominated though and was very surprised that he wasn’t.

Oddly, whilst I thought they were both brilliant individually, I didn’t think there was a lot of on screen chemistry between them! I would have believed them as brother and sister rather than husband and wife…

I am not sure that it mattered a huge amount as the individual performances and the concept of the story worked well anyway.

I liked Sinners. It was different

It was that!

berlinbaby2025 · 30/01/2026 07:09

Haven’t yet seen Sinners but it’s coming back to cinemas in March so I’ll see it then.

I watched Marty Supreme and wasn’t impressed, the story was too thin.

SpringBulbsPop · 30/01/2026 07:57

Jessie buckley obviously

He was completely boring.

EachandEveryone · 30/01/2026 17:02

I’ve just finished one battle after another. Well, it was a ride!! Beautiful to look at and I loved the nuns I would like to have seen more of them. Something about it was off though. Maybe it was just too long? Sean Penn was fantastic in it. Were they free to live their lifes then once he had gone? I wish Leo wasn’t such a loser and that they could’ve ended up with just normal boring lifes.

As last year I am trying to watch all the best picture nominations (plus anything else from director or acting categories)

so far (marks out of 10)
one battle -4.25
bugonia 4
frankenstein - 2.5
sentimentsl value - 2
hamnet -3

so 5 left to watch,2 at cinema and rest via sky cinema or Netflix or Apple tv.

EachandEveryone · 15/02/2026 20:22

What can be watched streaming? It’s been a rubbish year.
