Any guesses as to what/who will be nominated for an Oscar?

One of my favourite things to do is to see all the films then stay up
to watch the ceremony. Last year I never seemed to be out of the cinema. This year due to illness I couldn’t. I’m wracking my brain to think what film has had people talking about it. Have you seen anything that has been excellent?

I'm really looking forward to seeing Sentimental Value as I loved that director's previous film, The Worst Woman in the World. It's out in the UK at the end of next month.

Another foreign language film tipped to be nominated for a few above the line Oscars is The Secret Agent, out here in Feb.

berlinbaby2025 · 05/12/2025 22:38

Tipped for a few Oscar nods is Marty Supreme, out in the UK at the end of this month. Hugely looking forward to this, not least because Gwyneth Paltrow makes her return to acting and she’s been getting rave reviews.

AstaEscapes · 06/12/2025 04:22

I’m going to watch Marty Supreme on Boxing Day! Booked the ticket based on glowing review headlines, so I’m relieved that the trailer I saw this week looked mildly intriguing. Slightly worried by the ‘comedy’ tag - but then, The Bear was described as comedy and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything more tension inducing and absorbing in my life.

berlinbaby2025 · 08/12/2025 22:30

I’m delighted for Amy Madigan, who is doing really well so far this award season.

Has anyone else seen Sorry, Baby? I thought it was one of the best films I’ve seen for ages and it’s also picking up steam with awards.

Starting to think Leonardo Dicaprio will be picking up his second bad boy in a few months’ time. Just a hunch as his film is really popular and he’s campaigning like mad. He did a talk at the BFI Southbank the other day but I couldn’t make it 😔

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 08/12/2025 22:38

Roberta Aramayo for I Swear?

SocksAndTheCity · 08/12/2025 22:41

I was lucky to see Sorry, Baby at a special screening with Eva Victor doing a Q&A, @berlinbaby2025 and I agree it deserves recognition (and I loved Naomi Ackie in it too). I think it's on Mubi now.

I missed the BFI Southbank talk, but I was at the IMAX screening with Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson the night before and it was fab. That one is definitely on the BFI website now so the longer one might be too Smile

Jacob Alordi winning was a surprise and I hope this bodes well for Amy Madigan. I can’t see Jessie Buckley losing any awards in the run up to the Oscars.

Another big predictor of the Oscar nominations is the SAG awards nominations, announced tomorrow.

AstaEscapes · 06/01/2026 22:08

Is there somewhere I can go to protest against Weapons even being nominated for any award? Horrid, waste of time film …

AstaEscapes · 06/01/2026 22:15

Sentimental Value deserves one or two awards, even at the expense of my two favourite films of the year. I’m still processing Hamnet, (saw today) but cannot see how it’s better in any way than Sinners. And while I don’t demand that every film be as propulsive as One Battle or Marty Supreme, Hamnet was so static.

berlinbaby2025 · 06/01/2026 22:22

Hamnet was a bit boring and I wasn’t particularly moved. I think it’ll win some tech awards and Jessie Buckley will win Best Actress. In her category I would love to see Eva Victor get nodded for Sorry, Baby.

Beekman · 06/01/2026 22:25

Jessie Ware for Hamnet and everything else major to One Battle. Maybe, maybe Little Timmy for Marty Supreme. I would like to see Blue Moon win something (actor, supporting actor, screenplay for a start).

ComedyGuns · 06/01/2026 22:29

I’m usually an Oscar geek, but this year has been particularly lean for great films unfortunately. I haven’t seen (and don’t want to) Another Battle, or whatever it’s called, but am really excited about Marty Supreme. Other than that I’m not sure.

SocksAndTheCity · 06/01/2026 22:39

I am too @ComedyGuns , but bar Sinners, Weapons, One Battle After Another, It Was Just An Accident and Sorry, Baby I've not rated or even seen any of the other main contenders (bar Wicked 2, I suppose) and most of them don't interest me at all.

The Critics Choice panel obviously took to Frankenstein more than anybody I've spoken to who saw it, I can't stand Timothy Chalamet and Hamnet doesn't interest me in the least. F1 was so boring I fell asleep, even with Brad Pitt.

I was happy to see Sinners/OBAA get the awards they got, and also Amy Madigan. We'll see what happens with the Golden Globes 😀

AstaEscapes · 11/01/2026 17:17

(Where I’m from ecstatic about their Best Supporting Actress thoughts.)

HollyhockDays · 11/01/2026 17:23

I’d like to see The Ballad of Wallis Island get best original screenplay.

Jesse Buckley seems a shoe in for best actress.

berlinbaby2025 · 12/01/2026 22:34

I wonder if the Golden Globes last night will influence the Oscars since voting began today? I was slightly surprised Amy Madigan and Benicio Del Toro lost yesterday when they’d been doing so well.

The rental hire for One Battle After Another came down today, so I’ll be finally watching that this weekend.

IsThisLifeNow · 12/01/2026 22:42

Sean Penn us amazing in one battle after another, his body language and stance said so much about the character before he even opened his mouth. Dicaprio was also great in it.

I thought Russel Crowe was great in Nuremberg. It's hard to say I enjoyed the film given the subject matter, but I found it so hard to associate him with anything I'd seen him do before, such a transformation!

Yes wicked and Frankenstein for best costumes too

berlinbaby2025 · 11/11/2025 22:28

I think Hamnet will get the most nominations and most wins. I saw it a few weeks ago and wasn’t that impressed.

More positively, I saw Weapons last week and I’m rooting for Amy Madigan, who was brilliant in her role.

I LOVED her character, but found the book very underwhelming.

But everyone's going on about it

Sean Penn for One Battle

Was going to post this.

He was AMAZING!

I do want to go and see one battle after another.

It's incredibly good

No bad acting, and a great story

Re read the book this week before going to see the film.
O’Farrell has spun a marvellous tale about Shakespeare’s family/background and especially his wife, with grief being a central pillar of the story.
She’s a very skilled writer.
