Saw this tonight with my two teens. I loved it, they liked it (high praise) and didn’t even complain about the length. Only the Apple product placement.

Excellent acting, really great cinematography (particularly the final scenes) and soundtrack. Plus, a really, surprisingly positive political message especially given the fact it’s a blockbuster US release in the time of ICE enforcement. Great ridiculing of the white supremacist MAGA bros.

Also some very funny moments coupled with good cat-and-mouse chase scenes.

I think it’s a film for our times I am sad to say. I thought it was fab and LD gives an amazing performance. Loved the soundtrack too.

JoeySchoolOfActing · 28/09/2025 16:54

Saw it Friday and loved it.

Wildly entertaining but thought provoking.

Sid9nie · 28/09/2025 17:31

Really liked it . Sean Penn was great. Could have been a bit shorter though.

BeachLife2 · 28/09/2025 17:46

I enjoyed it overall, but I wish they'd made the rebel group more moderate rather than full on open borders supporting anarchists.

It made it hard to sympathise with them.

threestars · 28/09/2025 23:36

I had no idea what to expect except the likelihood of falling asleep in the film’s 2hrs40mins.
The time FLEW! I loved this film - the humour, the dialogue, the backdrops, Leo di C as a hero wiped out by daily living, Sean Penn in an outstanding character portrayal.
i already want to watch it again.
DH, however, really didn’t like it and was a muttering misery all the way home. Looking at reviews now, it seems to be a love it or hate it film.
Do you think Benicio del Toro’s character just happened to be helping people cross the border, or do you think he was also a member of the revolutionary group, there to aid and look over Willa’s upbringing?

SocksAndTheCity · 29/09/2025 16:59

I saw it this lunchtime at the IMAX and loved it to the point where I almost booked to go and see it again tonight.

I think the score made the film, but Sean Penn especially was fantastic and it was a lot funnier than I was expecting. The car chase made me feel a bit sick Grin

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 30/09/2025 17:14

I nearly walked out in the first half hour, but then it turned into a more compelling film

I now have American Girl stuck in my head!

Sean Penn was fantastic

So glad to see a thread!

Saw it yesterday and I am in awe. Think it may be the best film I’ve seen this year (and I thought Sinners had my whole heart). I cannot remember the last time I wanted a film to be twice, three times as long - I just luxuriated in its winding immersiveness.

If Jonny Greenwood doesn’t win an Oscar for the soundtrack …

Every single casting decision was spot on.

The moment the hospital receptionist said Bob! Pure, utter, ecstasy.

The nuns! I could have spent a year watching them.

The road. OMG, the road. Epic cinematography.

I’m actually still too excited to say anything sensible about it - I just wish every cinema experience could be so overwhelmingly brilliant.

Bigneonsign · 06/10/2025 12:11

I also loved it. Greenwood for best score. Everything he does is perfection.

Much funnier than I anticipated - the password scene with DiCaprio was perfect. Del Toro during his thing during it... Superb. Perfect way to add levity.

Agree on the point about the group perhaps being too hard line, but probably wouldn't have been such a fun film if it hadnt have been so extreme - both in terms of action but also motivations etc from various characters. So it had to stretch it.

ozarina · 07/10/2025 20:39

Absolutely loved this film - it gripped me for all 2 hrs and 42 mins ❤️

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 07/10/2025 22:13

First twenty mins tedious.

Everything else great.

Yes I didn't like the main female lead in those 20 mins.

MusicalCarbuncle · 08/10/2025 23:26

I’ve been away and forgot about this thread - sorry :)

Glad there are fellow lovers out there.

i so agree about the cinematography and the roads bit at the end. Such a clever and effective device, it’s going to end up on loads of film course specifications …

I thought Chase Infiniti (Willa/ was brilliant, as was Regina Hall (Deandra) but I was less keen on Teyana Taylor (Perfidia). Might have been the scripting though as she was a pretty clumsy and one-dimensional character I thought.

Sean Penn did great visual acting (is that a thing? - I mean body postures, facial expressions, etc) and Benicio del Toro was masterfully understated. Leonardo di C played himself again (!) but mercifully didnt shack up with someone less than half his age: Bonus.

Just saw this - wonderful! What I noticed was how the scene & pacing created the narrative, rather than the dialog. No one standing around explaining what is going on, the scenes just showed it. Masterful. I can sometimes find storylines difficult to follow, but not here.
It is based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, and the rebel group pretty hardcore, like the Red Brigade, Bader-Meinhoff gang & of that era.

Stopsnowing · 09/10/2025 22:42

Went to see this because there was nothing else on. It was fantastic. The beginning was too violent and dull but it turned into something much better. Ally eh action was amazing, script, cinematography etc. proper cinema experience.

SocksAndTheCity · 09/10/2025 22:48

For anybody who can be bothered and find the time, I highly recommend a second watch. I noticed all sorts of things that I hadn't the first time round and I enjoyed it even more, despite knowing how the story was going to go.

Like a PP I didn't think anything was going to touch Sinners for my film of the year but I think this might have just pipped it, and not just because I have a huge crush on Benicio Del Toro 😀

Chulainn · 12/10/2025 00:02

I saw this today. I didn't like Perfidia at all and as she was the Central character at the beginning, I didn't enjoy it at all. I loved the rest of it. Di Caprio was fantastic and very funny at times. Sean Penn played the horrible captain to perfection, so much so I hated him in it. Aside from Perfidia, the casting was great. Even loved Comrade Josh.

Well1mBack · 20/10/2025 16:44

Cinematography was great, it was great acting and the soundtrack was amazing.

But I'm afraid to say I didn't enjoy it, I could not warm to any of the characters and Sean Penn turned into a full bond villain by the end, which just took me out of it. I found it a very male centric film. The language, the way the female characters were treated, it just wasn't for me at all.

However I appreciate others love it!

DaisyChain505 · 20/10/2025 16:53

Loved it, everything about it!

The sound track was brilliant, Leo’s character was fantastic and him running about in his robe and shades was hilarious.

Sean Penn embodied his character to perfection, I really hated him!

I've just watched it following recommendations on here. Fantastic movie and really apt for our current times. I hope it gets many film awards and nods. I'm not sure if it was meant to be intentionally funny but it was. "Do they have any weapons? I think they are vegetarian."😂. Gorgeous Leo with his beautiful eyes made it difficult to follow the script at times. 🥰

IsThisLifeNow · 04/11/2025 15:32

loved it, though leonardo dicaprio did a great job at being a likable deadbeat, the action was great and funny as well
