Becsue some people enjoy collecting things? Some people like to rewatch a movie? Why are you bothered?

gamerchick · 07/09/2025 18:14

Good for YOU I think.

I rewatch films, I like to OWN films to have ready when I fancy or the internet is off. Films get put on and taken OFF streaming sites and I don't spend decent coin on a film just to give it to a charity shop.

So you DO you.

Keroppi · 07/09/2025 18:17

Libraries in my area don't offer rental DVDs anymore.
Lots of people are turning back to DVDs as you get extra content and it won't be pulled from streaming services. You own it forever.

Some films made, even recently, are now impossible to find legally and you either need to own it on DVD or pirate it, as the distribution rights have been pulled.

Ellmau · 07/09/2025 18:17

You won't find any in charity shops if no one buys them in the first place.

HappiestSleeping · 07/09/2025 18:19

I am a dvd owner. I bought them before streaming services existed and of films I could watch over and over.

These days, the streaming services make it so difficult to find content I want to watch, I am starting to dip back into the DVD collection. Ironic really.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 07/09/2025 18:19

Bizarre post

I re watch movies
I like to see the covers to remember them.
Sometimes you forget about a great film and 're-discover' it

Loads of reasons

tartanhaggis7 · 07/09/2025 18:20

seem's a waste of time to watch the SAME film YOU know what''s going to happen NO surprises DUST collectors when there' LOADS of films u hav'nt watched because your watching the film for the 50th TIME !!!!!!😂

Because I do not want my choice of viewing dictated by whichever idiots are in charge of Netflix, Disney Plus etc.

Nor do I want to pay every time I watch it.

These days, DVDs can often be bought for less than £1.

Nobody is asking you to do it. It’s a shame you are so concerned that others have different ways of enjoying things. Never mind. I hope this makes you happy.

You are not making your case in a very convincing style, OP.

@tartanhaggis7 So pleased when people clear out their DVD collection to the charity shops. Only this week I spent 6 pounds on 6 DVDs in the Heart Foundation shop. Once we've watched them, they will be returned for somebody else to enjoy.

TheOnlyThing · 07/09/2025 18:25

One of our cars has in car entertainment that runs in DVDs so we pick them up from Charity shops so the kids can watch films on long drives.

bilbodog · 07/09/2025 18:25

Because i can watch gladiator and all the tarantino films as many times as i want? And most of those were bought before streaming services existed.

NoWordForFluffy · 07/09/2025 18:25

We have DVD / Blu Rays. We have a surround sound system which doesn't work with streaming, so discs it is!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/09/2025 18:27

I mean, you could question a lot of people’s choices.

CAPITAL letters WHY use RANDOMLY throughout one’s SOCIAL media posts? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Remingtonsteele · 07/09/2025 18:27

Because we go camping in our campervan and can watch a dvd film in the evening where there’s no internet.

we both have favourites we like to rewatch. We swap out the ones in the van now and again.

TeenToTwenties · 07/09/2025 18:29

Because rewatching films is fun.
You see new things or get to re-enjoy well loved moments.

TheNightingalesStarling · 07/09/2025 18:30

Last night we wanted to show our 12yo a film we thought she might like. It wasn't on Netflix or Disney or anything else. We could but it on Amazon...

Or just enjoy the DVD we already had.

Dabberlocks · 07/09/2025 18:30

We have a fair few DVDs and some of them have been watched a lot. I like owning things. Besides, as a pp says, there was a time when you couldn't just watch whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted to.

Anyhow - I see your DVDs and raise you about 30 Disney videotapes, which neither adult dc nor I can bear to get rid of. They were dearly loved and watched so often.

RedRiverShore5 · 07/09/2025 18:37

I keep my DVDs because streaming services lose the licence to films and series so you can't watch them forever

Dabberlocks · 07/09/2025 18:38

We also have several videos of programmes we taped off the telly, and some of them are unavailable via streaming.

RedRiverShore5 · 07/09/2025 18:40

It's nice to have the original version as well before it's cleansed

HonestOpalHelper · 07/09/2025 18:58

As a film enthusiast I like to watch the original version - that's often not what is broadcast - for example distributors idents get changed and dialogue sometimes gets cropped / scenes slightly edited if something is said that would cause offence to todays audience.

Many DVDs of classics also offer the directors cut and the theatrical version, some movies are better watched as the directors version, as they were often cut to fit cinema run times.

Juliejuly · 07/09/2025 18:59

Some films are really comforting to rewatch, and not always available online.

This is why we still have a collection of DVDs; many films have now been edited before being streamed to remove ‘unacceptable’ scenes. (Crocodile Dundee springs to mind as one example).
