The OP's writing style reminds me of Richard Griffiths' character in the Vicar of Dibley who used to shout a word every so often.

Vicar of Dibley is a series I've watched over and again. It's lovely to have favourite shows or films you can watch again and again when you need comforting, cheering up, to unwind or just to enjoy watching with someone who hasn't seen them before.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/09/2025 19:58

Same as books, surely. You can go to the library, after all, but plenty of people still buy books.

tigger1001 · 08/09/2025 21:04

It's just an odd thread.

i have some films that I would never get tired of watching over and over. And some very much invoke memories for me. Remembering watching them with my grandmother for example.

some films are a watch once and that's it for me too.

depends on my mood too. If I want a good feel good movie etc I know what will fit the bill.

I also don't agree that once you have seen it once you know everything about it. Sometimes it makes much more sense on second or third viewing as you see things you didn't notice before.

I will also reread some favourite books over and over. It's the same thing.

its just one of these things that's an individual thing really

RedDoorBlueHouse · 08/09/2025 22:08

I find watching films I love multiple times brings back memories, depending on your emotion at the time it can bring joy calm or sadness and MANY more emotions.

notacooldad · 08/09/2025 22:14

Why listen to the same song, you know what the lyrics are?
We eat spaghetti bol.again ( or your favourite thing)
You know what it tastes like.
Why go on the same walk more than once. You know whats there?

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 08/09/2025 22:46

DVD's often have directors commentary, which I enjoy watching as much as the film sometimes.
Also deleted scenes and behind the scenes footage.
I love all of that.
Braveheart had Mel Gibson's commentary and is really interesting 😀

Mothership4two · 08/09/2025 22:58

I like rewatching films and TV series and they arent always available on streaming. Same as rereading books.

We've been away a couple of times this year to UK destination and both had dvd players - one place was quite remote with no streaming or wifi and the TV was patchy so dvds were all we had. We have played dvds through the laptop before when we've been on holiday.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 08/09/2025 23:09

I lost it at your list of the DVDs you do own @tartanhaggis7.

You're quite right, those are the only four films worth watching more than once.

Talipesmum · 08/09/2025 23:45

Maybe they bought them all before there were multiple streaming services and before you could pick dvds up for £1 in charity shops…. perhaps there’s some correlation between people having had large personal dvd collections and lots of dvds being available now in charity shops? It wasn’t always like that - you’d only get old vhs in there, and before that, nothing.
Plus if you have plenty you might wait years before rewatching one.

Yes, the same thing happened with CDs. A win for people like me!

TheWiseAmethyst · 09/09/2025 07:26

Foyles War
Bouquet of Barbed Wire
Harold & Maude
The Help
We'll meet again
The House of Elliot
Gimme Gimme
The League of Gentlemen

All watched more than twice on owned DVDs. I could never part with them. Those are just some of them. Spend a rainy afternoon REWATCHING Jungle Book is lovely. WHY not try it????

DancingwiththeEuropeans · 09/09/2025 07:32

OP, go and watch Tenet and then tell me you completely understand and remember everything (and then explain it to me 😀)
Also, what about books, do you feel the same way about those?
I used to be an usherette so there are some films I've seen more than 50 times, sounds like that would be your absolute worst job ever!

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 09/09/2025 07:45

It was the 30 year anniversary of Braveheart last week, the Premiere was in our town Dh was working at one of the venues that were holding the vip.cinema guests, it was all very exciting, again 30.YEARS!!

Radiatorvalves · 09/09/2025 08:31

We have a holiday house abroad with no internet. DVDs work well.

Ah Tenet! I feel that is a film that is a tiny bit too clever for its own good...

NO I worked hard to earn my money and if I WANT a new DVD, I’ll bloody well BUY one. I DONATE plenty of items to charity shops and because I buy NEW and look AFTER my possessions, the charity shop gets SOMETHING really lovely to sell on.

ComfortFoodCafe · 10/09/2025 07:04

I find many streaming platforms put a film on and then you can never find it again once removed, or its never on any streaming platforms (28 days/weeks later is a good example) or you have to pay money to watch it.
So in this house, yes we have a collection of dvds and we watch them more than once. Occasionally will cull them if we no longer enjoy them but dont see the issue. Many people seem to be going back to dvds than streaming platforms and the best part NO ADS!

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 10/09/2025 07:18

I wanted to watch a film I bought on Amazon a while back the other day, but apparently, even though I paid for it, it is not available for me to watch.

There aren't that many films I like enough to know I'll rewatch them from time to time, but I'm back to picking them up on DVD.

Nobody can decide to take them away on a whim, or decide they are offended about whatever random thing is offensive now and edit bits out of the film once I have the DVD at home.

I only watch one film a week and I want to choose films that will never have ads put in them, or not be available when I want to watch them.

SingingintheRadiator · 10/09/2025 07:23

I e got hundreds. I like world cinema and art house and you can’t always find them on streaming. Streaming also tends to cut films to pieces so if you want to see them as intended, DVDs are often the way to go. I do like to watch my favourites again from time to time. Don’t see the problem.

Gordon1958 · 10/09/2025 07:34

Not all films can be found on Netflix which is why Dvds are useful to have. I have the blu ray of the Peter Sellers classic Dr Stranglove which isn't currently avaliable to see on Netflix.

I’ve just watched 28 days later on Now Cinema, and 28 weeks later is currently on Netflix so I’m going to watch it at the weekend, if I’m feeling brave enough that is. 😬

IDareSay · 07/09/2025 18:59

This is why we still have a collection of DVDs; many films have now been edited before being streamed to remove ‘unacceptable’ scenes. (Crocodile Dundee springs to mind as one example).

Omg. Just googled what was cut from Crocodile Dundee. Even the 'that's not a knife' scene fgs 😮. That's all the reason anyone will need to buy a favourite film on dvd!

Also OP, you'll get well stressed that some of us still buy CDs. Sound quality is much better than streaming and it's annoying when a favourite track being withdrawn from streaming services

Gordon1958 · 10/09/2025 07:47

The blu ray of Tora Tora Tora is the extended version and has documentarys about the making of the film.
