seem's a waste of time to watch the SAME film YOU know what''s going to happen NO surprises DUST collectors when there' LOADS of films u hav'nt watched because your watching the film for the 50th TIME !!!!!!😂

So you asked for answers then rubbish the answers because it isn't what you would do. Seems a waste of time to me to ask bloody stupid questions on MN, but some people do it.

Last time I counted I was 200+ DVD's without counting the box sets. I rewatch films regularly. Why do you care what I do?

Dearg · 10/09/2025 08:00

Bring back Blockbuster, then Op can stop shouting.

Gordon1958 · 10/09/2025 08:02

It's impossible to watch the original Carry on films on itv as the PG rated films tend to be cut before showing! Even on itvx they are cut. Then there's dvd films you can't get on streaming like Dr Stranglove. Many blu rays have extra features which are not carried on the streaming service.

Any vinyl records? There's money in old vinyl.

EveryDayisFriday · 10/09/2025 08:06

I have some old DVDs from the days when they were popular. Rarely touched now that we have all the streaming services but handy for the old film/ show that is rarely streamed. They were a complete godsend when the electricity company cut our internet cable by mistake and we had no tv or internet for 3months whilst we fought with Virgin to get it fixed.

RampantIvy · 10/09/2025 08:11

I guess the OP doesn't have books or CDs either.

We have all three, although I want to cull some of them. We have DVDs of series that were on Sky because we don't have Sky.

Also, all of our CDs are from the days before streaming. I have most of them on other media now, but haven't got round to culling them yet.

Gordon1958 · 10/09/2025 08:12

I just did a search on the UK Netflix site for Peter sellers films. None. Yet on channels like talking Pictures I can see Two Way Stretch and The Mouse That Roared.

What does this mean?

Badbadbunny · 10/09/2025 11:27

I buy lots of newly released films and box set series on DVD when they're on offer via Amazon or Tesco etc, but after I've watched them once, most are sold via Ebay straight away whilst they still hold most of their value, sometimes separately, sometimes in series i.e. Paddington 1 and Paddington 2 sold together as soon as we'd watch number 1 whilst number 2 was still in demand. So the amount I "lose" is pretty small and usually less than the "rental" cost if I rented a download via Amazon Prime etc. I've probably got a dozen or so that I've kept which I either rewatch occasionally or plan to rewatch.

I also buy a fair few older ones from charity shops for a pound or so which we watch and then re-donate back to the charity shop the next week.

I've no real interest in buying/renting downloads as often they're not much cheaper than buying a physical product and they expire so if you want to keep to rewatch in years to come, you can't.

Having said all that, I don't understand those who literally have racks full of hundreds of the things most of which they'll never watch again. Likewise I don't understand those who keep hundreds of books in walls of book shelves, again which they're highly unlikely to re-read. Fair enough for classics, first editions or relevant text/reference books, but not for bog-standard paperbacks by Tom Clancy etc!

nowitsmetime · 10/09/2025 11:31

I get both sides, I got rid of loads of DVDs I had accumulated over the years, partly because they were all on streaming services so I thought i can just watch it on netflix etc. But as someone else has already mentioned it doesn't stay on their platforms forever and you don't get to access bonus stuff so yes I have regrets. Plus sometimes you discover the only way to access them is by paying even though you have a subscription! I still have a few DVDs and I have chosen to keep hold of these. I actually think DVDs might make a comeback as I know I am tired of the number of subs you have to have to watch your favourite stuff as they are never on the same platforms.

MrsBobtonTrent · 10/09/2025 11:33

We've started accumulating DVDs again. We can watch with no/unreliable internet. No adverts. Swap with friends. Watch old films again or introduce the kids to them. Not dependent on what expensive streaming services "allow" us to see. We've got one streaming service at the mo and when it runs out in November we're seriously considering not subscribing to another one (usually we hop between deals). Local charity shop does 10 DVDs for £5, and we check out the chairty shops/CEX wherever we go. It feels good to have physical media that we have control over, instead of waiting with a begging bowl for whatever Netflix or Disney deign to dole out.

GroovyChick87 · 10/09/2025 11:39

I like to watch films again if I like the film.I don't know what's unusual about that. However, I don't own many DVDs anymore as most things are available to stream at home and there's lots of choice available for things to watch immediately. I also hate the clutter of things like DVDs and CDs.

Denim4ever · 10/09/2025 11:43

DS is a cinefile we own loads of DVDs for stuff that's not on streaming.

We are the same with classical music CDs and would be with vinyl had we not disposed of it about 20 years ago before it came back into fashion.

tartanhaggis7 · 10/09/2025 11:55

Thats great if you enjoy watching the same film!! but have a wander down to your local charity shop and browse the dvd's depending on the shop some have them displayed in abc order and you MIGHT see a film you NEVER even thought of watching ( specially with winter approaching ) put on your " cosy " coat and while away a couple of hours BROWSING and if you buy 5 ENJOY donate them back to shop NO CLUTTER !!!! GOOD HUNTING 😀😀😀

Why are you shouting OP?! You’re coming across unhinged.

I like to watch films - often alone. If I watch a film I think my DP might enjoy, I rewatch it with him, then I might suggest my DCs would like it and watch again with them. I have comfort films that I know I enjoy, whereas new films are an unknown quantity and I often get 10-15 mins in and decide I don’t like it, so I revert to films I know I like.

Having seen it before isn’t an issue, in the same way that watching Titanic wasn’t spoiled because we knew the boat would sink, or an adaptation of a book or true story I know the ending to.

I don’t watch films to be surprised. I watch to be entertained, whether by the acting, beautiful cinematography, moving score etc. in the same way I watch TV shows for the nostalgia and still find the jokes in eg Friends funny upon rewatching for the 16th time - sometimes even more so because you pay attention to the build up and people’s reactions around the main character when you know what’s coming.

I thought they were all back at school?

gamerchick · 10/09/2025 13:56

Nah you're alright.

Charity shop dvds are shit usually. Very rare you find a gem.
You might like to watch tripe OP. Go for it. I'd rather not thanks.

Remingtonsteele · 10/09/2025 11:24

What does this mean?

I don't think the OP knows what they're on about. Hence the shouting.

SuperBlondie28 · 13/09/2025 23:08

My hubby STILL has VHS Tapes at HOME!! 😂He is slowly getting rid of them at my nagging. Used to own 2 player's and copy films from Blockbusters onto blank tapes. Don't know how though. Before I met him.

I like to own stuff like CDs and Blu Ray/DVD's.

I'm careful when and what I buy. I often buy preowned from Ebay. Buy in the sales from HMV. Never buy from Amazon. Occasionally from charity shop. I love picking up a film from our collection that we haven't watched for a long time. Like The Conjuring last night. So much better than the Conjuring Last Rites film, at cinema now.

The OP has a rather strange typing style lol

DuesToTheDirt · 13/09/2025 23:38

@SuperBlondie28 my DD has a CD that she bought second-hand, and the two best songs are damaged and unplayable. I bought the same one new so I could listen to those songs...

TheGrimSmile · 14/09/2025 00:15

I like to watch my favourite films again and again. I also don't want to feel that the likes of Amazon have absolutely control over my life.

LlynTegid · 19/09/2025 20:56

I've bought a few where it has been the only way of seeing a film I missed when shown at the cinema.

As for music CDs, only in recent years if I know one of the musicians.
