Cinema Goers - How Often Do You Go?

TwentyKittens · 03/03/2025 10:44

I'm interested in levels of actual cinema going rather than anyone who mostly streams.

I'd say I usually go at least once a week, maybe twice, unless I've exhausted all the movies I want to see, and then have to have a week or two of drought before the next lot start.

This week is a major anomoly as I'm there five nights! I don't even watch the vast majority of blockbusters/Hollywood stuff.

Next week it's film club in a cinema further away, where once a month we gather to watch a foreign language film.

There a Japanese season coming soon so I'll probably book for a couple of those.

In a fortnight there's a 25 Anniversary screening of Chocolat, and later a 100 Anniversary screening of Phantom of the Opera!

About half a dozen times a year because we get free tickets with Sky cinema and use those between us. Would go more but they are all 10 miles + away. There are a few things I want to see at the moment or coming up.

SocksAndTheCity · 03/03/2025 13:23

I normally go once or twice a week and quite see two in a day (my local cinema has cheap tickets on a Monday) 😀. I rarely watch TV and don't pay for any streaming services.

This last couple of weeks has been relentless though; I'm not going again until Thursday now, and I'll likely have at least a week off after.

Manchesterbythesea · 03/03/2025 13:26

Hardly ever. Maybe a couple of times a year. I hate the cinema. Can’t stand sitting near annoying fuckers with their popcorn and their phones. If we do go it’s on a 2 for 1 offer with our mobile phone provider.

EmmaStone · 03/03/2025 13:28

Wow!!

I think I manage about 6-8 times a year. I was given Everyman membership for Xmas with 6 free tickets - I'll definitely use them, but unlikely I'll use many (if any) more.

I love the cinema, but with work and family life (plus I go to exercise classes on Mon, Tues & Thurs when I'm available), I'd struggle to even fit in weekly!

SocksAndTheCity · 03/03/2025 15:19

Yeah, your cinema sounds shit,@Manchesterbythesea. Phones aren't tolerated in the ones I go to, or I likely wouldn't go either.

RabbitsRock · 03/03/2025 15:21

Wow OP that’s a lot! I go maybe 3 times a year. Saw Wicked before Christmas & haven’t been since, although DH & I are going to see the new Bridget Jones film next week.

CapaciousHag · 03/03/2025 15:30

I’ve only recently started going to the cinema again, after a few years of forgetting they exist.

Looked at the various memberships at my local multiplex - and for about three seconds considered signing up for the subscription that gives seven (seven!) free tickets per week. Hmm Then realised I don’t even manage more than one or two a week at home, with every possible streaming service available.

But, now that it’s Spring I’m trying to make a Sunday afternoon habit of a brisk walk through college gardens to the cinema. A G&T at my seat is an added bonus.

CarrieOnComplaining · 03/03/2025 15:54

I love it and go as often as there is something I want to see. Recently been to A Real Pain, Hard Truths, A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist, now want to catch up on Anora and I’m Still Here.

I have Picturehouse membership and go when tickets are cheapest with the members discount.

And avoid Fri and Sat when the buckets of popcorn are out. But Picturehouse are quite civilised.

GlacialLook · 03/03/2025 15:59

Depends entirely on whether there's something I want to see. I live very close to a multiplex which has a small 'arthouse' screen, and not far from an arts centre which also screens indie and old films, and will do seasons of a particular director's films etc. There are several film festivals locally -- a big, international one, and then smaller ones like the French film festival, various shorts festivals etc. I will always see lots of things at those, and I also go to various opera relays, and the occasional theatre relay. Other than that, it depends entirely on what films are screen. I missed A Real Pain, which I'm annoyed about.

salemcooper · 03/03/2025 16:07

I'd say maybe 1 time a year, maybe 2 on a really good year. It's expensive around here. Last time we went, 2 adults and 1 child was almost £30! That was without snacks etc. I remember when I was a kid my parents used to take us to the cinema and then for a meal about once a month... we certainly wouldn't be able to afford that now... it'd be about £90!!!

Advent0range · 03/03/2025 16:07

Wow. Maybe 3* per year?

Aaron95 · 03/03/2025 16:12

On average we go once a week. Sometmes more. We have Odeon membership so it costs the same no matter how often we go.

We don't pay for Netflix or any other TV services. I love the experience of seeing a film on the big screen. Watching a film on a TV is just not the same.

FlorencenotRatchet · 03/03/2025 17:01

I've been 8 times this year already.
The cinema has always been my escape and happy place.

Sixpence39 · 03/03/2025 17:03

Probably every 6 to 8 weeks! Once a week would be a dream.

ffsgloria · 03/03/2025 17:04

Between 1-3 times a month depending on what's on. Lucky to have a cheap local cinema. Since Jan 1st have seen: We Live in Time, Better Man, Hard Truths, A Real Pain, Bridget Jones, A Complete Unknown, Conclave. I love the cinema, it's where I switch off.

CapaciousHag · 03/03/2025 17:27

We don't pay for Netflix or any other TV services.

This has given me pause for thought …

Before Covid I didn’t even have a TV licence, let alone a TV, and wasn’t signed up to any streaming services. Now, I still don’t own a TV, but I’ve definitely turned into someone endlessly scrolling for something to watch. Maybe it’s time to re-think. The fortune I spend on streaming would pay for cinema membership several times over.

Hmm … Thank you, @Aaron95.

(Although … The White Lotus on Now TV…)

category12 · 03/03/2025 19:28

I've got Cineworld unlimited so go several times a month. We also go to the local arts cinema.

We actually went 4 nights in a row last week 😂- Memoir of a Snail, The Monkey, The Last Showgirl and Secret of the Sacred Fig.

maximalistmaximus · 03/03/2025 20:29

Have a card/pass so once a week or fortnight. But it varies. Can be3 times in one week!

LlynTegid · 05/03/2025 21:12

I think last year it was about 20 times, half of which were at film festivals I think. That's about average for me.

PassingStranger · 06/03/2025 21:16

I go when there's something I want to see, which dosent happen often.

ClearHoldBuild · 06/03/2025 21:44

Since Christmas I’ve seen We Live in Time, Better Man, Hard Truths, Babygirl, Here, The Importance of Being Earnest and I’m going next week to see Anora

TwentyKittens · 08/03/2025 20:42

Thanks everyone. This is a really interesting selection of hardly at all.to quite a.lot.

Films seen so far and booked for the next week or so are:

Conclave
We live in time
A complete unknown
The brutalist
Io capitano
Cottontail
September 5
Girl with the needle
Ichiko
To a land unknown
Totem
Mickey 17
Anora
I'm still here
Chocolat
No other land
We make antiques!

There are a few of the coming soon films I want to see, too. So probably by the end of March I'll have averaged maybe 6-8 films a month this year.

butterflysandrobins · 08/03/2025 20:56

Once this year. Once last year

Bpickle1 · 08/03/2025 21:10

2 times a week on average at arthouse or foreign cinema screenings mostly

SwanOfThoseThings · 08/03/2025 21:14

I'd say about 4 times a year.

We mainly watch DVDs at home - we don't subscribe to anything although we sometimes stream a film from the Freeview players.
