saw it last night. It is really absorbing

OP posts:

I am interested to see it. I've read the hook and found it a bit predictable. I'm an absolute liturgical pedant. So if it's not correct it will really annoy me!

AngelontopoftheTree · 30/11/2024 11:05

I read the book many years ago, and enjoyed it.
I'm looking forward seeing it, but would not have put it into Oscar category that some seem to be suggesting.

heldinadream · 30/11/2024 19:18

Not read the book, thought the film was brilliant. Ralph Fiennes was superb and I thought Oscar worthy. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through. The shadowy political machinations were done really well.

potplantsinparadise · 30/11/2024 19:21

Absolutely loved it. Perfect combo of twisty plot that just corkscrews along; incredible actors doing brilliant work; gorgeous gorgeous cinematography; unexpectedly funny. I love Robert Harris' books anyway and this is such a great adaptation.

nonbinaryfinery · 30/11/2024 22:43

I loved it. Saw it last night and when I realised what was going on, I was so fucking pleased.

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 01/12/2024 07:12

I thought it was the best film I’ve seen all year. I worked out the ending about ⅔ of the way through. Haven’t read the book but I’ll definitely buy it and read it.

Incredible acting.

The cinema was pretty full which is unusual for 8pm on a Saturday night.

MagpiePi · 01/12/2024 07:46

I read and enjoyed the book but guessed the twist quite early on. I do like a bit of political intrigue and machinations and I quite like the pomp and ceremony of the Catholic Church even though I’m a die hard atheist.
I’ll probably go and see the film as Ralph Fiennes is always a bonus.

heldinadream · 01/12/2024 14:17

OK interesting to see people guessed! As in what? Guessed who would become pope? Guessed that there would be a revelation about this person? Guessed what the revelation was? I'm trying not to add spoilers. 😂I guessed they'd be made pope but I thought the thing about them would be another thing, not what it was, I genuinely never saw that coming.
So glad I hadn't read the book, would have taken all the 'gasp' out of it!

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 01/12/2024 14:23

Guessed both the twist and who would become pope for me.

MarmaladeSideDown · 01/12/2024 14:34

Do you need to have a passing understanding of Catholicism to get the most out of this film, or is it really good anyway?

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 01/12/2024 15:43
Christmas Candle GIF

Not at all @MarmaladeSideDown . It’s about individuals, Ralph Fiennes is both subtle and intense. Fabulous cinematography. The setting, tone and casting is amazing.

I guess it’s more about democracy, politics, power and people than Catholicism, you could apply the plot to any number of settings.

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 01/12/2024 15:47

Not sure where that’s from 😂, my post is text only, or is that a mnet thing!

Maybe it's a Catholic thing @FaceLikeACrackedScreen 🤔 😉

I re add the book last year and and seeing the film tonight. I cannot wait! I am not in the least bit religious but am slightly obsessed with the Pope and the process of the conclave.

rookiemere · 01/12/2024 21:15

I went to see it tonight. Much more gripping than I had anticipated although the twist at the end seemed a bit de trop.

The performance from Ralph Fiennes was magnificent, absolutely gripping every minute he was on the screen.Isabella Rossillini and Stanley Tucci were also pretty good. Definitely worth a watch in my view.

MagpiePi · 01/12/2024 21:28

I can’t actually remember who became pope in the end as I read the book more than a week ago 🙄 so seeing the film will be interesting.

garlictwist · 02/12/2024 04:37

I saw this at the weekend having never heard of it or the book. I enjoyed it but agree that the revelation about the guy who became pope wasn't needed as a plot device, there was enough going on without it.

Cynic17 · 02/12/2024 12:51

I've read the book - twice! - and I still couldn't remember the "punchline" 😂
But Ralph Fiennes is magnificent, it looks amazing and the soundscape of it is fantastic.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/12/2024 20:26

I enjoyed the film
Much more than the book. Although it did annoy me when Lawrence didn't preach with his mitre on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/12/2024 17:47

Saw it this afternoon, highly recommended, very gripping, and Ralph Fiennes is brilliant.

Blahblahmama1 · 23/06/2025 08:24

Watched last night on Prime. Ralph Fiennes was amazing. Spotted the plot twist as soon as they entered the scene.

Epli · 03/07/2025 16:13

Same, I think it was predictable but very well acted and very well made (music, editing & cinematography), so overall an enjoyable watch.

HermioneWeasley · 03/07/2025 16:15

mostly a good film with excellent performances, but the ending was so stupid it spoiled the whole things for me

Yes. I thought the actor was good in the role (though not very convincing re the ‘twist’ )apparently he’d been an architect for 30 years and was pretty much a newcomer to film acting.

I loved that about the film. The fact he was a newbie to acting. It made me feel quite inspired and I have actually signed up with our local extras agency on the strength of it!

I LOVED this film. DS1 who is 15 is a film buff also and I took him to see it for his 15th birthday. His dad and my parents all said it would be over his head (he has a range of SEN) but he was riveted. His speciality is filmography and music and he was bowled over. We have since together watched it a further 2 times in the cinema and once at home on dvd.

Favourite actors/characters- John Lithgow. Lucian Msamati when he was so broken.

Glorious.
