I was riveted but more than a little downcast afterwards, I have to admit. But thought the childbirth scene was jaw-dropping - and the newborn actually looked newborn for once.

Blandmum · 26/04/2008 09:52

I read the book and knew that I could never read it ever again. V good book though

Janni · 26/04/2008 10:17

agree - totally totally depressing, but very wellmade from a cinematographic viewpoint.

Not one to watch if you're feeling low!

cornsilk · 26/04/2008 10:31

Yes I agree. I had no idea what it was about when I watched it. Quite shocking in parts.

southeastastra · 26/04/2008 10:36

what happens?

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 10:42

downbutnotout my dh and I thought the exact same thing about the childbirth scene and the baby. was very impressed in a suicidal kind of way!

southeastastra - its about a terrible future where children arent born anymore and the UK is like Nazi Germany. I wouldnt want to say anymore in case you decide to watch it!

An extraordinary film, especially the warfare sequences.
I thought it was splendid.
On another note, I watched the English countryside hungrily. So green. But they still didn't match up the film's narrative to the seasons. Meh.

Fullmoonfiend · 26/04/2008 12:09

yes, we felt utterly utterly depressed after watching this.
Thought Michael Caine was excellent though and I normally hate him

SandyDennyWasAGreatSinger · 26/04/2008 12:27

this depressed the hell out of me too. The way that England was portrayed in a not-too-distant dystopian future really gets under the skin. The parts set in Kent really spooked me, and that guy who only referred to himself by his christian name - Sid, was it?

johnso · 26/04/2008 12:29

Oh I thought it was terrible, poorly acted trash!!
I liked Michael Caines house though

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 13:56

I didnt think it was poorly acted but then I am not a critic!

zippitippitoes · 26/04/2008 13:59

i thought it was an awful film bad acting hilarious in poarts for the wrong reasons

cant understand at all why it was so well received

imo it was crap

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 17:41

do you remember which bits were badly hilarious? I am trying to remember.

OP posts:
Iota · 26/04/2008 17:43

ooh I've had this on skyplus for ages - shall I just delete it without watching it?

zippitippitoes · 26/04/2008 17:47

the pushing the car to start it

er the boat at the end

the general lack of crowd cast

the fact that they keep bumping into that same little gang

the small world ness of it generally

it is like abdly made tv programme

sort of poort mans sci fi sub sub doctor who stylee

just imo

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 17:50

Iota IMO its worth watching IF you dont mind depressing films. I honestly didnt notice any of the bad things zippi mentioned BUT I know what she means. Its just that I am one of these people when I watch a film I dont put my critic hat on very often. I'm just intellectually lazy like that.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 26/04/2008 17:51

well dont put off anytghing more important iota like changing the beds or washing the car

but do come back with your vote

Iota · 26/04/2008 17:52

hmmmm not sure I really want to watch it if it's v depressing. dh was watching one about the Twin Towers last night - I left the room and MNed.

zippitippitoes · 26/04/2008 17:52

the trench

i am legend

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 17:54

havent seen either of those zippi. and Iota I could not watch one about 9/11 although a sick part of me wants to sometimes I just coupldnt cope with it.

OP posts:
Iota · 26/04/2008 17:54

I haven't seen either of those Zippi

zippitippitoes · 26/04/2008 17:55

i did like eastern promises

i saw it at the cinema and bought it on dvd

but that is partly lust

iamdingdong · 26/04/2008 18:00

I was shocked by how depressing it is, but not disgusted

eenybeeny · 26/04/2008 20:35
