My favourites are already mentioned, but I'll add

Agree with 12 Angry Men, It's A Wonderful Life and To Kill A Mockingbird.

A Night To Remember would be my other suggestion (a Titanic movie).

I've heard M is great but never watched.

Ah - I've only ever seen it in B&W! My bad.

Look up all the Frank Capra films for starters. But there are a zillion others, the film noir ones like Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice… the romantic comedies It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby.
And don’t forget All About Eve… or Citizen Kane. All the Laurel and Hardy films. It’s a very big category you’re looking at so it depends what you’re interested in.

Yes Brief Encounter is stunning. Noel Coward at his finest! Love the Rachmanioff soundtrack too. All so moving. ‘Nothing lasts really. Neither happiness nor despair. Not even life lasts very long.’ I’m happily married but love a good train journey as I always imagine being Cecilia Johnson and falling in love with a stranger!

It’s a Wondeful Life! Imagine never experiencing that beautiful film. We always watch it at Christmas (kids were forced to watch and now love it) and I always cry. They show it at an old cinema where I live and everyone applaudes when it finishes. I love it when George Bailey kisses the broken banister. Ooo! Is it December yet? I have the film poster on my wall in a frame.

Aconite20 · 12/10/2024 07:55

The original Cat and the Canary
Jane Eyre with Orson Welles
The original Innocents
The Haunting

(The last two are quite scary though)

Casablanca
It's a Wonderful Life
Some Like it Hot
Passport to Pimlico
The Lady Killers
To Kill a Mockingbird

Agree with passport to Pimlico and lady killers. Whiskey galore is also a good one. As are any of the Ealing studio comedies.

for an eerie one I quite like The Innocents. It’s not super scary but a good slow build of unease. Perfect for Halloween 🎃 👻

Will need to have a think. When I was younger, was really into films. Don't watch films as much now due to time etc.

Casablanca
To Have and Have Not
Key Largo
Rebecca
Roman Holiday

Lots and lots of films in the noir genre from the 1940s or early 50s. Double Indemnity is fabulous. It's a while since I've seen it but I remember being very struck by Sweet Smell of Success. That terrifying one with Robert Mitchum and some children - [googles] Night of the Hunter!

The 39 Steps - the 1930s one with Robert Donat - a touch creaky but he is marvellous
The Lady Vanishes - Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave

A favourite of mine from childhood - The Belles of St Trinian's. I can't be bothered with any of the sequels but this is the original and it still makes me laugh. Alistair Sim was a comic genius. A very young George Cole, Joyce Grenfell, Sid James and a host of British character actors. Great stuff.

Has anyone said Hue and Cry yet?
