Omg I'm sorry if there is already a thread running but what an absolutely brilliant film........I've not finished it yet (waiting for OH to go toilet) but I'm absolutely engrossed!!!! I highly recommend it......pretty certain there's a little bit of "Amy" in each of us.....

We watched it last night. It was ok, there was a lot they left out of the story (as usual in a biopic).

I couldn't get behind the woman who played Amy, she seemed a bit of a caricature in places.

Dunnoburt · 15/09/2024 19:48

I get you......she's growing on me though .....and I can't get over blake looking and sounding like dermot o leary......I grew up in her era and was never a fan .....starting to think how tragic and sad it all was

I thought it was awful!

Dunnoburt · 15/09/2024 19:52

Ahhh maybe I have bad taste then lol....

I watched it last night. I felt it lacked any depth around what drove her to drugs, having been so anti when she met Blake to just suddenly having a guy turn up and hand over what I presume was heroin on her doorstep.

I liked the actress and thought she did a good job from what I’ve seen of AW. Blake was a bit of a caricature and I didn’t really buy their deep connection from the few glimpses of drunken snogs we saw.

Apparently her dad was quite displeased with the way he was presented in the documentary, whereas he came across in the film as a supportive stand up guy, so I’m not sure that relationship was fully developed in this film either.

I gave it 5/10, which is pretty low for me, I’m usually quite generous with film scores.

needhelpwiththisplease · 15/09/2024 19:54

It was poor imo.
Was so scatty, left out loads of stuff, the singing was ok but not Amy.
It was just lacking .

Dunnoburt · 15/09/2024 19:58

Ahhh maybe they should have " done a Dahmer" and dragged it out over 9 episodes (god knows I've watched that one enough haha)......I guess I can see myself in Amy having had that infatuation with a first love and how it lead to basically what she couldn't get out of.... I'm surprised at the negatives..... I've not finished it yet though lol x

I watched at the cinema and will probably watch again for the music. Actually felt really fictional, lots of her life missed out. The best bit was the music, she was such a talent in her lifetime. What a loss.

Dunnoburt · 15/09/2024 20:01

We agree there......what a tragic loss

Starlightstarbright3 · 15/09/2024 20:03

I watched it on prime - loved the music .. definitely lacked depth .

MrsJamin · 15/09/2024 20:07

I was a huge fan of Amy's music. I'm really not sure about the narrative this movie is trying to promote, specifically around her dad's involvement in her career and her descent into drugs. The documentary movie was incredibly moving and I trust the story as told by it. I'd rather just listen to her music rather than watch this tbh. Plus you can tell how good the movies are by their rotten tomatoes ratings - Amy is 96%, Back to Black is 35%.

Dunnoburt · 15/09/2024 20:10

There's a documentary movie?......please, tell me where because that is my next watch and then I can do a fair evaluation........everybody can't be wrong!!! I was going to whatsapp my mates saying they had to watch but not now! ......

Saw it in the cinema, thought the actress played her really well.

Pity about the man, but yea, we've all been there, (not that I ever did heroin, fuck no!!)

Luckily most of us got out alive from abusive men.

She reminded me of other biopics of amazingly talented women who didn't make it like Janis Joplin.

suburberphobe · 15/09/2024 20:17

Oh yea, her dad....

Don't know enough to know if he was more of a hindrance or a help to be quite honest.

Read Britney's book whose dad was absolutely toxic to her, stealing her money basically while putting her under conservatorship.

imverynosey · 15/09/2024 21:33

I watched today and loved it!!

Rotten tomatoes is just opinion not fact!

BobbyBiscuits · 15/09/2024 22:17

I thought it was dreadful. The dialogue made me cringe. There was no semblance of her rise to success. And why pretend she was trying to get pregnant when she hadn't menstruated for seven years. She wasn't that stupid.
It just was a terrible piece of filmmaking.

HarrietSchulenberg · 15/09/2024 22:29

I watched it last night. It felt a bit of a potted history but there's only so much you can do in a couple of hours.
I was pleased that the actress was not expected to become as painfully thin as Amy was. That would not have been the case just few years ago.

jonesybonesy · 15/09/2024 22:48

I thought it was good

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/09/2024 23:34

I've just turned it off part way through. It was dull.

Lovewine1975 · 16/09/2024 09:15

Watched it over the weekend and thought it was very good the actress playing Amy was fantastic, singing was fab, loved all the songs, and the way they were put in context with what was happening in her life

rockingbird · 17/09/2024 06:07

I got halfway through this and turned it off. As a Londoner at the time of her career taking off and in and around the areas she frequented this film doesn't touch the sides. Her dad is also made to look like the good guy - he lost definitely wasn't. The Blake relationship was also missing substantial parts, the documentary is farm more real in my honest opinion.

rockingbird · 17/09/2024 06:09

Some odd auto corrects there 🥴 you get the gist!

lololulu · 20/09/2024 19:52

They are too good looking to play them and too likeable in my opinion.
