Omg I'm sorry if there is already a thread running but what an absolutely brilliant film........I've not finished it yet (waiting for OH to go toilet) but I'm absolutely engrossed!!!! I highly recommend it......pretty certain there's a little bit of "Amy" in each of us.....

I posted as such on the original thread when this was in the cinema; however many months later it remains by far the worst film I've seen this year (and possibly last year too). And that list is not short.

VictoriaSpungecake · 22/09/2024 01:45

I didn't like this at all. For a start I didn't really like the idea of a film being made about Amy Winehouse - there are already a few documentaries out there and of course her brilliant records. The director of this film just couldn't match the artistry evident in Winehouse's music. She really does deserve to be called a genius. I didn't really want to watch a movie about her drug addiction and decline. and is very difficult to show mental health problems on screen in any authentic way. I also wanted to see more of her female friendships instead of focusing on her destructive relationship with Fielder-Civil. He's had enough airtime.

Yeah there have been some very poor films this year. I suppose the production companies put out their best offerings near the end of the year for Oscars consideration.

I'd say the remake of The Colour Purple was worse, but this was absolutely dire too.

I'd agree, but for some reason I thought that was last year! It was diabolically bad, that much I do remember 😂

Looking through my cinema-watching notes, my second worst film this year was The Beast and I still stand by that, too.

I really liked the film. Watched it last night.
I recall the time well and liked her music from the beginning.
Like all biographical films, the writer links events and music in a fictional but could have been way.
I thought the actress did a fantastic job at playing Amy.
She was emotionally fragile behind her shell of bravado and gutsy Londoner.
At the very least, it did accurately show how tragic and short her life was.

All right, Sam Taylor-Johnson, I've rumbled ya!

Is that you SpongeBob? Long time no see.

😂I don't quite know why but that made me laugh.

pickedplock · 25/09/2024 11:32

I thought it was awful. Glamourised the whole issue and didn't really go into the complexity of Amy's character, very two dimensional, surprised it was a female director. Also found the film too forgiving of her father.

pickedplock · 25/09/2024 11:33

But yes the actress was brilliant.

mewkins · 25/09/2024 11:42

It was very hammy 'cor blimey' in places (I'm an eastern eastender and it made me cringe😆) but I enjoyed it for it's look back at that era which feels like a blink of an eye ago but was actually a very different time. All of the tabloid stuff is so depressing (watch the Pete Docherty interview with Louis Theroux as well for more of this). I haven't seen Amy the documentary yet but I suspect that is much less cringe inducing.

VictoriaSpungecake · 25/09/2024 15:23

She was very close to her female friends and had sexual relationships with women. I think I would have much rather seen a film from that perspective.

LlynTegid · 25/09/2024 15:24

I decided not to see the film, nothing in this thread makes me want to change my decision.

Lovetotravel123 · 25/09/2024 15:26

We loved it and the actress did a great job.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/09/2024 13:07

I sort of liked the film. The Amy actress was good but the one playing Blake was (and a few of the scenes) were very bad cockney and hammy.

The film did leave out a lot though and the last scene was poignant.

lololulu · 27/09/2024 10:57

Are there any other films or documentaries any of you would recommend?

Oh wow would never have guessed that about her.

The documentary by Asif Kapadia is very good, although very sad (and not even remotely cringe inducing). I think Prime has it to rent.

To be fair, when the bar is set this low just about anything is better, including not watching a film at all.

StolenChanel · 27/09/2024 21:00

You’re not alone, OP, I enjoyed it too! And I thought the actress did quite a good job of playing her too.

Aquarius1234 · 27/09/2024 21:03

I liked it, but wasn't expecting a great epic drama. I knew it wasn't going to be really gritty and nasty.

VictoriaSpungecake · 28/09/2024 13:36

Aquarius1234 · 27/09/2024 20:38

Oh wow would never have guessed that about her.

I have a feeling that the women who loved her are very respectful of her memory and aren't forever publicising or justifying their relationship with her like Fielder Civil.

LlynTegid · 25/09/2024 15:24

I support you in this. I wasn't going to see it and then had my arm twisted. I wish I had stood my ground. Don't go.

I really don't like the idea of people making money and building careers on the back of AW. I don't know why it matters so much to me because I watch other biopics of dead stars. Perhaps it is because she was so vulnerable (despite being so "tippy" and because she was so young when she became a star). I feel as though she has been exploited enough.

Nell1974 · 11/10/2024 15:53

I thought it was crap and demeaning to Amy Winehouse. I don't think her Dad was the good guy portrayed in the film either, he desperately wanted fame for himself and had to settle for being Amy Winehouse's dad. I wonder how her mum felt about the way she was played in the film?

MrsJamin · 13/10/2024 15:18

I started watching it as I was bored and had a bug. Only got halfway through when I got fed up of the propaganda of the dad, the bad singing by the actress. Amy was exploited by her dad when she was alive and is exploited by her dad in her death. Awful.
