Sadly I didn’t get the opportunity to see this at the cinema, but caught up with it today.
I thought it was marvellous, faultless cast, beautiful cinematography, and I really felt uplifted after watching it.
Anyone else a fan?
I was so surprised not to find a thread on the subject already.

Actually Perfect. 🥰🥰

KohlaParasaurus · 25/07/2024 22:23

I saw it at the cinema and loved it. As everyone says, the frocks! And I was a little bit in love with the delightful Vi.

DeadbeatYoda · 25/07/2024 22:24

Watched this a couple of days ago. Leslie manville is a brilliant actress and the scene where she had to face that her husband was dead was a masterpiece of understated acting, conveying such heartbreak wrapped up in repressed emotion and stiff upper lip. So moving.
Having said that, by halfway through the film (the strike) I felt it all got a bit cheesy. A nice film, on the whole.

IceCreamWoes · 25/07/2024 22:26

I thought it was one of the worst films I've seen and I was so looking forward to it. I turned it off

Thierrymugler · 25/07/2024 22:49

I didn’t see it at the cinema, but watched it a few months ago, as my sister has a dodgy fire stick. 🙃

Yeah, it’s lovely. Annoyed my soul when she gave the dress to her friend. But that’s the kind of lady she is.

I think I’ll rewatch it though.. 🩷

BuggeryBumFlaps · 25/07/2024 22:49

I have just text a few friends to tell them to watch it, what a lovely film

Zonder · 25/07/2024 23:04

ComealongMartha · 25/07/2024 22:05

Read the book, it’s even lovelier.

I was wondering how it compares to the book.

Zonder · 25/07/2024 23:06

GoldFrame · 25/07/2024 22:06

I did not know it was a book, far less four books. Happy days!

Only the first two are worth reading. The third is terrible unless perhaps you're a Reform voter. It gets all political.

Bimblesalong · 25/07/2024 23:15

I really enjoyed it too. Have you seen Phantom Thread, dark but also involving that period and couture?

@GoldFrame I like to do that too - I’m sure you know about the tax refund system for luxe goods imported back to uk, so you’ll save a little more. Remember to process the forms before going back thru security and come back to tell us what you’ve bought.

wizzler · 25/07/2024 23:46

I loved it. Wouldn't it be wonderful if life was like that... the armfuls of roses, the dresses, lovely interesting people in the station waiting room

Lurleene · 26/07/2024 00:03

I remember a film from a while back called Mrs Pettigrew Lives for a Day with Frances McDormand. If you enjoyed Mrs Harris you may enjoy that too.

MovedonfromMartin · 26/07/2024 00:23

I finished watching this last night. I loved it. A lovely, feel good movie. Like @Midlifecareerchange I thought the lead actress was brilliant in Mum which is why I watched it.

NewName24 · 26/07/2024 00:28

Such a lovely film. I saw it ages ago, but will watch it again if it is on Netflix now. thanks for the heads up.

HiGunny · 26/07/2024 01:02

Came across this tonight and watched it. DH was out so it was just me, a glass of wine and some peanuts - perfection! It was a little cheesy in parts but I just went with it 😁

A similar but better film is 'Ladies in Black', it's really sweet.

GoldFrame · 26/07/2024 05:31

@Lurleene Mrs Pettigrew Lives For a Day is one of my favourite books

GoldFrame · 26/07/2024 05:33

@Bimblesalong i did not know about that, so thank you! I’ll look into that

I told someone of my plan to travel to Paris to buy it with some money I was left, as an adventure. And they recommended this film 😊

Bimblesalong · 26/07/2024 08:51

@GoldFrame take your passport as they’ll need to get details from it for the refund.
I like the store on the Rue de Sèvres. It can be a bun fight in there at times when it’s v busy but is a beautiful building.

they won’t have the full selection of scarves but should have plenty to show you.

I loved it too.

Read the book decades ago and have just found out it was the first in a series of 4! I'm going to see if I can get the others.

I didn't know there was a book. Thank you! I have just purchased Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris and Mrs. Harris Goes to New York, read by Juliet Stevenson, on Audible.

hattie43 · 26/07/2024 18:22

I've just watched it . How nice to see a gentle feel good film . Hated that that bloomin girl trashed her green dress but lovely that she got her happy ever after .

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 26/07/2024 18:33

Thanks for sharing! I'll be watching that as soon as I get some time to myself!

Elderflower14 · 26/07/2024 19:13

Thankyou for saying this... Me too!!

TwinklyNight · 27/07/2024 04:53

I am watching it now. Omg those beautiful dresses! The fashion show just ended. Glad I found this thread.

justasking111 · 27/07/2024 05:46

The books are lovely. There are three.

I posted earlier to say I loved the first two but couldn't read the third. It feels really different, like it was banging a particular political drum. Did it get better? I abandoned it about a quarter in.
